AIBU to think there's no decent Christmas Presents to buy under £15

And there aren't a lot over £15 either!

I've been on all the usual websites. Amazon, Firebox, Iwoot, etc etc and they're all selling the same unimaginative plastic (et al) tat.

It's just total tat!

FFS

Or am I being unreasonable (hopefully!) and you can point me in the direction of some decent, reasonably priced, Christmas gifts under £15 (ish).

(Specifically, things that are fun on the day to play with, but aren't just total pap)

Well, I can think of lots of gifts for people around the £15 mark, but then they are pretty specific and not 'gift sets' or something that someone has decreed should be a gift.

Genders, ages for DCs (not just 'teen' a 13 year old and a 19 year old will get you very different suggestions) and sort of things they like, and we can come up with more ideas.

(and do teenagers 'play with' things other than phones or would they not have outgrown 'toy gifts'?)

sharonthewaspandthewineywall · 04/12/2015 12:26

Are you looking at specific christmas gifts or just in general?
This is why I buy early, on holiday and places where they sell nice unusual gifts instead of the mass produced shit thats peddled at this time of year

Krampus · 04/12/2015 12:36

Teen to adult female

Very cosy gloves, they do different colours.

A bit over but these are the worlds warmest scarves

Male version of gloves, not so cuddly but still lined. My teen boy is getting these.

mass produced shit thats peddled at this time of year

This is what I'm moaning about ^

Thanks for the additional ideas.

I've suggested the secret santa idea but getting my lot organised with something like that is akin to organising kids in pre-school.

I was hoping for things that are fun to play with on the day, as opposed to gloves/socks/soap on a rope type things.

You need to have consumed alcohol for these, but could be a gift for someone who likes entertaining and drinking. Did I mention that its best to have consumed alcohol?

No fun on the day. Will be in the bin by new years eve I suspect. Overpriced crap.

The charm leather bracelet was a good gift for my sister who still wears her.

Apologies if some of us can't afford to go shopping in Tiffany's every year.

It is probably hard to find anything thats fun to play with for teens and adults that aren't complete tat. I must admit that once past the pre schooler kids Ive discouraged mynkids opening and playing with their presents if we're not in our own home. Its too easy for bits to get lost.

These are nice compact games, that are good for al generations.

mrsjanedoe was just coming to say cards against humanity. So much fun and all the better the drunker you get.

Krampus · 04/12/2015 12:54

Cards Against Humanity looks perfect for someone I know. Thanks.

You need the bargain threads in the Christmas section!

Boots No7 are having a daily deal each day leading up to Christmas with one product a day half price. Three put together would be a nice present?

We have a £15 limit for family secret Santa - I got a hummingbird necklace from NOTHS and a couple of Body Shop bits (when you could use a 40% off code on the sale items) for my niece. It's definitely possible, it just takes a bit of effort.

TheMshipIsBack · 04/12/2015 13:02

Star Wars mini Lego sets - got a couple at Morrisons for £9 or £10. You would be amazed at how many grown men ( DH) will weep with joy for a tiny X-wing at Christmas.

DinosaursRoar · 04/12/2015 13:47

right, who do you actually need to buy for?! Not just £15 - a girl, boy, age, partner, sister etc. What do they like?

do you want a novelty toy to be played with on Christmas day or do you want a gift they will use over and over after Christmas? At teenage onwards, it's unlikely you'll find a multiple use novelty toy. There are lots of lovely gifts that would get used, they aren't all toys though.

If you really want 'toys' - then a board game might be suitable - a classic like Monopoly, cludo, pictionary, or one from a TV show like Pointless or Would I Lie to You? Are all in your price range.

But really, stop trying to find a 'fun but long lasting' gift for someone too old for toys, you're on a hiding to nothing. Nice gloves, nice scarfs, nice chocolates, nice jams and chutneys, nail varnishes, jewellary, clutch bag, body lotion to match my perfume - they would be things I would like to get and all available in your price range (assuming you don't go down the 'gift set' route).

DinosaursRoar · 04/12/2015 13:52

oh and last year I got my dad a filter coffee mug - was his favourite gift and a big hit for under a tenner. That and some nice coffee would be a good gift for anyone who likes their coffee.

Or buy a toy lightsaber. Every bloke I know would secretly love a lightsaber and most are buying them for their uninterested DCs so they can play with them you can get them from Amazon for a tenner again. If you get more than one person who'll be there on Christmas day a lightsaber, they will spend a large chunk of the afternoon fighting with them...

TheOnlyWayToEatSandwiches · 04/12/2015 14:22

Thanks everyone.

I guess I am hoping to find something fun on the day which is also a keeper.

Most of the fun things you've all mentioned, they've got already.

And while I appreciate a nice pair of socks etc - they're not much fun on the day really.

The actual stats I'm working with:

SIL: 47 - intelligent (masters), businesswoman runs restaurants (so can't be food related gift), into fast cars (owns some) - not into beauty products or socks.
BIL: 42 - don't know him very well, likes drinking
Their children:
DD1: 20 - into fashion
DS1: 18 - not sure what into
DS2: 14 - typical 14 year old nerd but not particularly into computer games

I've got the main presents covered. And they're not very exciting. So want something nice for each of them to open and play with on the day.

Look beyond the gifty tat-merchants and get something which reflects the person you're buying for. Books, music and games aren't expensive, nice toiletries don't need to be explicitly branded as Christmassy to be enjoyable, and fancy food/drink gifts can all be found for under £15. I'd be thrilled with a box of the chocolate-dipped figs from Carluccio's and a bag of nice coffee for Christmas, and that's under £15. The problem is we think of Christmas as a time to buy 'the best gift ever' rather than just looking for something the recipient will enjoy and use!

yoshipoppet · 04/12/2015 14:32

I found much the same when shopping for a SS gift with a £5 limit.
In the end I went for a colouring book from the pound shop and some decent pens on special offer.
But that was after hours of searching online and getting fed up with novelty willy-based items.

PennyHasNoSurname · 04/12/2015 14:37

If you want somethig that can be played with on the day then qhy not a Board Game? Somethig like Articulate is excellent, and then just chocs each on top?

DinosaursRoar · 04/12/2015 14:45

OK, at those ages, you don't need to find something for them to play with on the day, they are old enough that the company will be entertainment and they won't need distractions - if you want to get nice gifts for each of them on top of whatever you've already bought, you'd be better not trying to get them things to play with, or get joint gift for something to entertain them all - do they have a wii or xbox? You could find some games they can play together for those, ideally something everyone can get stuck in to together, or as teams. After a few drinks they could be fun.

Or you could get a big hamper and fill it with various board games and make it a family gift. (you can get very cheap copies of most classic board games by looking at Tescos and Sainsburys 'own brand' versions).

At those ages, Christmas fun isn't about the gifts really, it's about the food and company. The worse case scenario as far as I can tell with those age ranges if you do actually find something to give each person that they have fun with on the day and keeps them independently occuiped, rather than interacting together!

d270r0 · 04/12/2015 14:53

Little board/ card games. 'Fluxx' is a nice one. Or lego technic set for a teenager. Magic the gathering set for the 14 year old

DisappointedOne · 04/12/2015 14:56

I've made a hamper for a few hard to buy for people for about £15

Some fluffy socks, hand cream, gloves, scarf, milk tray and a bottle of Buck's Fizz. Lots of little presents which will all be 'used'

This is one reason we don't do presents. I wouldn't use any of that.

Buxtonstill · 04/12/2015 15:09

So you have already bought them presents, yet you want to spend another £75 they can 'play with on the day'? Why? Who are you trying to impress?
The kids will be on their phones all day, so I wouldn't worry too much about entertainment.
Why not get them something between them, like giant Jenga? Then they can play it outdoors on the summer too.

Thing is, the existing gift for the 'kids' is cash. They've asked for cash as they're saving for various things. Which is a very dull gift on the day.
