Yes its totally cheesy and unrealistic but that's all part of the fun, its a funny film. With some genuinely touching moments of pathos. The scene where Emma,Thompson I getting dressed after being given the Joni Mitchell CD gets me every single time. Love the "porn" stars, love Bill Nighy. Great film and I will be watching it this Christmas. So there!

Alan Rickman's character slept with Mia...the director himself said so. He said Mia's room was so tidy in the first scene, yet her bed is all messed up in the scene where she puts on her necklace, and that is to convey that she and her boss had sex.

HelenaDove · 06/12/2015 22:51

I think she stayed with him too Sad. . I see what PPs mean about Curtis and ideas about women. Emma T = the mother of Rickmans characters kids and you can bet she does the lions share of childcare and the "office temptress" Both huge stereotypes and the whole storyline screams Madonna/whore complex.

oneowlgirl · 07/12/2015 00:00

Thanks Fire - interesting as I never had her as anything other than British!!

Gladysandtheflathamsandwich · 07/12/2015 01:25

Dwelling on the AR/ET marriage thing.....she came down from her heartbreaking scene in the bedroom to the kids and him ready to go, him seemingly quite proud of this.

So we can deduce that she would normally come down and have to get the kids into their coats, ask him why they werent ready, him make some shitey excuse....whereas the one time he has a guilty conscience, they are ready.

Lesson there is, when your formerly useless husband suddenly starts to step up, its time to worry......

HelenaDove · 07/12/2015 01:29

Oh Well spotted Gladys

Gladysandtheflathamsandwich · 07/12/2015 01:41

Thanks. Its funny but it never occurred to me until tonight, she actually says that she is amazed that they are all ready to go and AR does the Ta-Daah! thing, so it is obviously something that had never happened before....

HelenaDove · 07/12/2015 01:48

When this is broadcast again on the 20th i think there may be a few of rewatching through MN eyes.

Gladysandtheflathamsandwich · 07/12/2015 02:39

Also...sorry, cant sleep.....I am wondering if he knew.

She picked his gift, was clearly gutted that it wasnt what she was expecting (as you would be, I would struggle to hide that) and then made an excuse to leave.

He knew that she knew. Which is why when she made her "What would you do if you were me?" monologue, he didnt look surprised or try to deny, he already knew the game was up.

TheDowagerCuntess · 07/12/2015 04:11

Love this film. One of the hot blonde Americans is January Jones.

Sansoora · 07/12/2015 04:14

Love Actually is the most marvellous of films and I watch it every year.

KittyCatPumpkin · 07/12/2015 09:25

for those who watch or have dc who watch adventure time, the girl who the 10 year old is in love with plays Marceline the Vampire Queen. Fantastic singer!

Cheesymonster · 07/12/2015 09:33

I read that the young girl sounded so fantastic when singing at the concert that they had to tweak the sound when editing to make her sound more child like.

Gladysandtheflathamsandwich · 07/12/2015 09:50

Olivia Olsen also plays Vanessa in Phineas and Ferb, her voice is still absolutely incredible. Her version of the Christmas Song (Chestnuts roasting on an open fire) is my favourite.

Chimchar · 07/12/2015 18:20

I love this film.

I was always confused at the very end...does Bill Nighy's character love his manager as a mate or in a romantic way?

I can't wait to watch it again.

The bit with ET upstairs always kills me....so painful to watch.

MissBattleaxe · 07/12/2015 18:25

He loves him as a mate. i think the message is that your friend can be the love of your life. It needn't be a partner or spouse.

imwithspud · 07/12/2015 18:40

He loves him in a brotherly sort of way, at least that's how I interpreted it.

Chimchar · 07/12/2015 19:04

Thanks.

I kind of thought that, but I'm a bit crap at interpreting films.

I keep having to clarify stuff with do to make sure I'm on the right track. Blush Grin

thebestfurchinchilla · 07/12/2015 19:10

i love it. I think apart from it being a feel good film, when it was released I went with DH to see it at the cinema at 8 months pregnant. I was hormonal, so happy and the film just hit the spot, so I'm always happy to revisit those feelings even 12 years on.
I agree with the comment about the Emma Thompson scene and I still HATE that man stealing bitch who tried to lure her husband away. The only bit that grates on me is when Martine Mcutcheon comes down the stairs on the way to her brother's school play and says, "Where's my fucking coat?" in front of her family and little brother and nobody bats an eyelid. A bit overkill on the cockney chat me thinks. Otherwise I love it!

thebestfurchinchilla · 07/12/2015 19:30

Oh and I definitely wouldn't watch it with my 15 year old, cert 15 or not. Those scenes with Martin Freeman would have ME hiding behind the cushions let alone my DD.

tkband3 · 07/12/2015 19:37

This thread has prompted me to order it on Amazon so I can watch it (without annoying adverts) over Christmas. I had been wondering whether I could watch it with my DDs (12 and 10), but having remembered the naked sex scene stand-ins, I think not - they'll have to wait a few years Grin.

phoenixrose314 · 07/12/2015 19:43

I love this film and would genuinely say it was my favourite film of all time. It encapsulates love in Britain so perfectly, from every angle, from the sister devoted to her unwell brother (gets me every time), to the stupid and moronic unfaithful husband, to the husband grieving after his wife's death and trying to step up as a dad to her son (the moment where he finally calls him "dad" pulls at the heartstrings too)... It's just lovely, just wonderful.

Introduced my stepson to it this past weekend. He's almost 13 and told me he loved it and it was now his favourite film. Made me so happy!

HelenaDove · 07/12/2015 19:46

Chinchilla Men are responsible for their own actions. Women arent responsible for mens behaviour.

phoenixrose314 · 07/12/2015 19:48

Oh, we explained to DSS about the sex scenes and the job they were doing - once explained, it took all the question mark out of whether we should have let him watch it or not. It's a good storyline and it works because they are both so shy but doing THAT!! He found it amusing and understood why it was funny. He's a sensitive and mature lad though, I think you make your own call about whether it's appropriate or not.

banff82 · 07/12/2015 20:50

YANBU! I absolutely love LA and I'm not ashamed to admit it! I've lost count of the number of times I've watched it, probably at least 2 or 3 times a year since it came out.

thebestfurchinchilla · 07/12/2015 21:06

Oh helena I thought this was a lighthearted thread! I said I hate that character and I do. didn't say she was responsible for his actions. Hate him too fwiw.
