Yes its totally cheesy and unrealistic but that's all part of the fun, its a funny film. With some genuinely touching moments of pathos. The scene where Emma,Thompson I getting dressed after being given the Joni Mitchell CD gets me every single time. Love the "porn" stars, love Bill Nighy. Great film and I will be watching it this Christmas. So there!

Love this film. And my dads friend is the Vicar in the begining, and is actually a real vicar!

MsVestibule · 03/12/2015 10:01

I love most rom-coms (Bridget Jones Diary, Notting Hill, etc, also other non Hugh Grant films) but really didn't like this. Emma Thompson's character's husband didn't really want to have an affair, but the slutty office temptress just made it too difficult for him to resist Hmm. The 'porn star' stand-ins were dull. I could go on but can't remember a lot of it. Too much going on, of too little interest.

The only bit of it I enjoyed was Emma Thompson's reaction to discovering her husband's infidelity; that was really well played.

SideOrderofChips · 03/12/2015 10:18

i LOVE that film. Its the start that always gets me, where Hugh Grant is talking over the arrivals at Heathrow.

The reason is not long after the film was released i met my now DH. And we had to fly to see each other as he lived off the uk mainland and i was on the uk mainland.

So talking about arrivals and departures always makes me cry

Jw35 · 03/12/2015 10:21

Oh yes! And Notting hill. I saw Notting hill 5 times at the cinema when it came out! I also like about a boy. Love Hugh grant

hellsbellsmelons · 03/12/2015 10:40

Yeah! It's nearly Christmas - I have an excuse to watch it again.
I looooove it - so there!
I cry at the end as well.

EssentialHummus · 03/12/2015 10:51

LOVE this film! We have adopted Hugh Grant's dancing and "Wandsworth - the dodgy end" in this house.

Bit of a guilty pleasure but I do enjoy watching it & taking the piss out of it whilst drinking baileys, a festive tradition!

I think Richard Curtis has some very strange misogynistic ideas about women that come across in his films, especially this one and About Time.

Utterlyclueless · 03/12/2015 10:54

I love this film!

sparklesandglitterxx · 03/12/2015 10:59

I love it Blush

and really fancy hugh grant in it

squoosh · 03/12/2015 11:04

It’s awful shit really, but as someone else said it’s a good film for dipping in and out of when you’re having a glass of wine and doing something else.

Like:

Emma Thompson – yes she should have LTB but her pain feels is real and the fact she stays with him feels real too.

Laura Linney – I shriek with joy when she manages to lure that South American lovely home with her. It causes me physical pain when her brother phones and interrupts. Physical. PAIN.

Hate:

The goblin child who breaches airport security because he’s so in love. Tazer the little fecker I say.

Andrew Lincoln and his creepy, stalking of his best friend’s wife.

Martin Freeman as a porn star body double – Even less appealing than imagining David Cameron as a porn star.

squoosh · 03/12/2015 11:06

And I like the montage at the end where the real people have their airport reunions.

Redcrayons · 03/12/2015 11:08

I love a cheesy romcom but this is just awful. I've watched it a few times, thinking I'm missing something, but I still don't get why people love it so much. The bit where he turns up with the 'I love you' cards. Wtf?

I will concede Emma T is perfect though.

zeetea · 03/12/2015 11:47

Haha MissBattleaxe my friend hates that 'I look quite pretty' line so much that she's refuses to watch it ever again.

I love it when whats-his-face walks out of the flat after that and is so annoyed with himself he looks a bit mad and scares the other shoppers.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one that weeps at the bed smoothing scene EVERY TIME! Such brilliant acting, that understated acting was just perfect.
Oooh and I also love the scene with the little signs between whats-his-face and Keira Knightly Xmas Smile

chanelfreak · 03/12/2015 11:57

tazer the little fecker I did a real LOL at that!

I unashamedly adore this film and while my DH is living it up at yet another corporate shindig tonight, I intend on watching it with the tree lights on and a Baileys hot choc in hand Xmas Grin

MeridianB · 03/12/2015 12:03

I re-watch it every year to get in the mood, usually while wrapping Christmas gifts or tree-decorating.

I agree about the scene with Emma Thompson weeping. I also love the girl finally getting the guy back to her flat and saying 'I'll be back in a minute, there is something I have to do..' and having her little celebration.

I think the Keira Knightley wedding video/music is really lovely.

And I always get goosebumps in the opening bars of that schoolgirl singing 'All I want for Christmas...'

Aaaah. Off to dig out DVD

LucilleBluth · 03/12/2015 12:07

It's a bit shit, Emma T makes it. I always watch it though.

I went to see it at the cinema, I was hugely, massively pregnant with DS2, I sobbed, those big gulping embarrassing sobs at the end. It reminds me of that time, due on NYE and being on edge all Christmas.

YANBU It's always on my list of films to watch at Christmas :)

allnewredfairy · 03/12/2015 12:24

Yanbu. It's certainly in my top 5 and always gets a play at Christmas. Emma Thompson opening her Cd gets me every time. I'd probably re-cast Kiera Knightley though as I sort of want to punch her whatever film she's in (Sorry Kiera!)

TheWitTank · 03/12/2015 12:29

It really is the most terrible shit, but I still enjoy watching it. It does make me cringe though, especially the wedding video part. Oh, and the fat comments about Martine. Awful. No doubt I will watch it again at Christmas though!

LetGoOrBeDragged · 03/12/2015 12:31

I think the Martine being fat thing was a dig at how society judges perfectly normal women as being fat, if they are over a size 10. Because Martine clearly wasn't fat - she was beautiful in that film (and still is).

Pringlesandwine · 03/12/2015 12:42

Aah, I watched this last night while wrapping presents and drinking wine. Perfect 😊

KoalaDownUnder · 03/12/2015 12:46

YABU. It is unmitigated shite. Grin

TheSeptemberIssue · 03/12/2015 12:52

I love this film, makes me cry every time but not at the storylines (although I do cry at those). I was a big Lynden David Hall fan (him who sings 'All You Need Is Love' at the KK and CE wedding) but he died of cancer a few years after the film came out, of the same cancer my Dad died of a year later. Always makes it extra weepy for me.
