Yes its totally cheesy and unrealistic but that's all part of the fun, its a funny film. With some genuinely touching moments of pathos. The scene where Emma,Thompson I getting dressed after being given the Joni Mitchell CD gets me every single time. Love the "porn" stars, love Bill Nighy. Great film and I will be watching it this Christmas. So there!

One thing which puzzles me is why the story line made Liam Neeson the little boy's step-dad and not his real dad? It didn't add anything really to the story,so why?

BlueBananas · 05/12/2015 22:49

Clawdy of course it did!
It was all about them bonding, re-establishing their roles and building a whole new kind of relationship after losing the one thing that brought them together in the first place
Just wouldn't have been the same if they'd been father and son

Clawdy · 05/12/2015 23:00

Never thought of that, and have watched it so many times! I've also remembered that some of the deleted scenes involved the wife's parents, who don't feature at all in the film, apart from a brief shot of them at the funeral. Maybe there was more about the whole family set-up originally.

Clawdy · 05/12/2015 23:03

Btw,those silly zzs in my other post were a mistake, don't remember touching the z but must have! Too much Saturday wine!

SteveBrucesNose · 06/12/2015 07:22

Oh god yes, I forgot about wanting things 'gift wrapped'.

No, no bloody holly!

OverAndAbove · 06/12/2015 07:40

There are so many great lines but ref the above and the gift-wrapping:

"A cinnamon stick, sir"

They are always presented with a flourish in this house...

flowerygirl · 06/12/2015 09:28

America, watch out, here comes Colin Frissell! And he's got a big knooob! Grin

flowerygirl · 06/12/2015 09:31

I always thought Emma Thompson chose to stay 'knowing her life would always be a little bit worse'. Why would she meet him at the airport otherwise? Let him get the bloody tube! The children could always see him later

oneowlgirl · 06/12/2015 09:45

That's funny Flowery as I saw it completely differently - I thought the look on her face & new haircut meant she'd left him but was doing the grown up thing for the sake of the children & being civil. I also thought the look on his face meant he was grateful & sorry & finally realising what he had stupidly thrown away.

MissBattleaxe · 06/12/2015 10:01

No, flowery is right. She stays "knowing her life will always be a little bit worse". The haircut just denotes time passing so it looks like a future thing.

Also when she picks him up from the airport she says to them all, including him, "Come on, home" and the way she says "home" is kind of expressed in a way I can't quite put a name to, but it's like she can't gush about home anymore.

oneowlgirl · 06/12/2015 11:31

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree MissBattleaxe Smile

flowerygirl · 06/12/2015 11:45

DH is certain she leaves him too!

Do you think Alan Rickman actually sleeps with the assistant? Hate the bit when she sits on the swivel chair with her legs deliberately open! Classy Wink

FireCrotch · 06/12/2015 12:30

I don't think she does leave him. She looks miserable and dejected at the airport and so resigned. In Europe it isn't Martine McCutcheon on the cover of the DVD it's office hussy. She's German in real life and a big star in Europe.

oneowlgirl · 06/12/2015 13:07

Is she really German? No hint of an accent whatsoever!

honeyroar · 06/12/2015 14:55

I hated it the first time I saw it. I'd recently gone through a bad breakup and it made me feel lonely somehow. I think some (a lot!) of the plots are silly and far fetched. Some are just sad. But over the years it's grown on me and I like it (perhaps because I'm in a better place personally?). There is some fantastic humour and acting in it. I can totally understand why people don't like it though.

Dancergirl · 06/12/2015 16:09

Anyone know if it's on again soon and what certificate it is? Trying to decide if it's ok for my 14.5 year old and nearly 13 year old dds...?

scarlets · 06/12/2015 16:41

It's being broadcast by ITV on Sunday 20th Dec and it's a 15, Dancergirl.

Floralnomad · 06/12/2015 17:27

We watched it yesterday as we have it on a sky download , my dd has been watching it for a few years and she is 16 .

FireCrotch · 06/12/2015 17:47

One owl this is her IMDb page m.imdb.com/name/nm0538443/?ref_=m_tt_cl_t10

MissBattleaxe · 06/12/2015 18:12

But if she left him, why would she collect him from the airport and take him home?

Gladysandtheflathamsandwich · 06/12/2015 18:18

I dont think she left.

She was so stoic and knowing and I think that she wouldnt walk away from the marriage for what, at least on the surface, appears to be a short lived fling. I do think he slept with Mia, but only the once when he gave her the necklace.

Whether I thinkg they survived long term is another matter, I suspect not but hopefully because she will realise that she is worth more, and gets half the business and that lovely house :o

Gladysandtheflathamsandwich · 06/12/2015 18:19

And yes, I have thought about this waaaaay too much!

FireCrotch · 06/12/2015 19:40

Just watching now. Has anyone noticed that the bloke sat next to Hugh Grant in the cabinet meeting (presumably the deputy pm) is the new factory owner (Shane wards dad) in Corrie? :o

imwithspud · 06/12/2015 20:31

I love it too, and I'm not usually into this sort of film. But the humour in it gets me every time. I love the Rowan Atkinson Gift wrapping scene! Grin

It's been a while since I last watched it and since it's Christmas I may have to subject DP to it again soon.

Sidge · 06/12/2015 21:27

jollyfrenchy I don't see it like that, I see it as she stays but is miserable. She picks him up at the airport with the kids but looks so resigned and unhappy. As if she's relinquished what she wants, to keep the family together to her own detriment.
