They've got malteaser ones after we went shopping and chose, saying they couldn't all have the £10 Lindt ones - £30 on advent calendars seems ridiculous!
But now I want the Hotel Chocolat one and id feel really mean spending £12.50 on mine now.
This really is a first world problem Grin

I think the thread is more in favour of buying yourself the candle or gin calendar if you want haronthewaspandthewineywall.

Kelsoooo · 01/12/2015 00:35

Right.

Well I declare all of you massively U.

I hadn't even contemplated getting a calendar (even as a grown mother of two I can't handle only one chocolate a day)

And now I'm coveting a beauty calendar, which I've dropped a massive hint about to my DH and if he doesn't purchase me it he shall feel my wrath and then I'll buy it myself :-(

SocksRock · 01/12/2015 01:06

I have a hand dyed yarn advent calendar (5g mini skein each day) which cost £30. DC's had Lego ones last year and have £2.50 chocolate ones this year. I didn't have one last year at all. They are happy and so am I. Plus mine will make up into a scarf I will wear all the time.

WorldsBiggestGrotbag · 01/12/2015 01:33

I am truly a bit flabbergasted by this. If I had any money to spare after food and bills, I would be spending it on things my children needed and wanted - not on a luxury advent calendar for me.

What if you had money to spare after food and bils and your children area already had everything they needed/wanted?

CakeNinja · 01/12/2015 08:11

Well it's the first and I'm not opening any doors on a calendar!
One chocolate wouldn't be enough for me anyway, I like to have a few. I have a couple of boxes of the little penguins from HC, some puddles (like buttons), a little wreath and an H box to keep me going for a while.
I will restock when supplies run low.
To those who are opening number 1 today, enjoy!

Some of the replies on this thread are absolutely ridiculous. Do kids actually give a shiny shite how much their advent calendar cost?! Confused
Of course they don't - they just love the chocolate and the opening of the doors every day and finding a new surprise!
It's never been about how much you spend here. They just choose one they like (minions, or whatever) and then get that one.
If the one you get as an adult costs more, does it seriously matter? Doesn't mean they're hard done by. Hmm
They're happy with the ones they've chosen!
I mean, I'd LOVE the Yankee candle one, which would obviously cost more. They'd be seriously unimpressed with it, and wonder where all the chocolate was if I got them one. Grin
So stupid to think you're not allowed to treat yourself, ever as a parent.
(FWIW, we've all got exactly the same price ones as we went out and chose them together and they were all the same price.)

3phase · 01/12/2015 11:13

I have the Hotel Chocolat 'advent calendar for two' for DH and I.

Kids have Frozen, Peppa Pig, Mars and Malteser (four kids).

Hadn't even occurred to me to feel guilty.

The two younger ones would have been gutted not to get Frozen / Peppa Pig. They wouldn't want a Hotel Chocolat one.

CakeNinja · 01/12/2015 11:17

The thing is, it would be a different matter had I not mentioned to dd2 that I wasn't spending £30 on advent calendars.
I think the fact i brought up the cost would then make it unfair if I went and bought a more expensive one.
although really, if I had bought it, it would still have been less than a £20 all round spend... Ponders some more... Grin

No, not really!

I have just open door 1
Of my Boots calender. Woohoo. no guilt

OpheliaMoo · 01/12/2015 12:10

I haven't opened my lindt calendar yet, it's in the fridge!

It wouldn't even cross my mind to worry about equal costs, as long as I could afford whatever I was buying and no-one was left out of having something.

MN is really eye opening sometimes

atreya · 01/12/2015 15:09

I still don't get the idea of any advent calendars for adults, personally. I don't know anybody who does it. And yes you are being unreasonable to consider buying yourself the better quality chocolate calendar, too. I don't like that thinking at all.

DurhamDurham · 01/12/2015 15:16

I have a Hotel Chocolate one while my husband and one daughter have a Cadburys one, younger daughter has a Kinnerton one because she dislikes Cadburys chocolate. We all seem happy with our calendars, I like strong dark chocolate and it's become a bit of a tradition for me to get a Hotel Chocolate one. My daughter's also have advent calendars from their grandparents and this year they are Lindt.

WorldsBiggestGrotbag · 01/12/2015 15:42

What is there to 'get'? It's not rocket science. You open a door a day and there's something behind it that you like.

BornToFolk · 01/12/2015 16:25

I have the L'Occitane one (cost £39). DS has a Dairy Milk one (£4)

It's pretty much my one total indulgence of the year. TBH, if I could get DS one of equivalent value I would but he's not really into Lego any more, too old for Playmobil..so that really only leaves the chocolate one. Which he loves. And I love mine. I can afford to buy both. Why the fuck not?

weeblueberry · 01/12/2015 16:28

I've got two Yankee ones. DD1 has a WOW toys one. I do feel slightly guilty that I have two and she's only got the one but both of mine were surprise gifts. Grin

SoWhite · 01/12/2015 16:54

In the majority of instances, small children wouldn't prefer a fancy truffle one. They'd prefer a character calendar.

It's not rocket science - why should anyone not get the thing they like and would choose, simply based on monetary value?

SoWhite · 01/12/2015 16:56

When you have a fancy meal at a restaurant, and they have cheaper chicken nuggets from the kids' menu - is this a problem too?

Of course its not. So many of these posts are bonkers.

Lynnm63 · 01/12/2015 17:02

Dc have a cheap chocolate one each, Frozen for dd Simpsons for DS and a thomas one for my eldest DS as he's a Thomas. What is most unreasonable is I didn't know until this thread that you could get adult advent calendars and NOONE has ever bought me one.
I want the M&S and boots one now.

reni2 · 01/12/2015 17:02

SoWhite, I think the OP's issue wasn't the cost per se. She had denied her dc the Lindt ones because they were £10 and got the much cheaper Malteser ones. She then felt a bit mean buying herself a £12.50 one.

So in your example the kids wanted lobster, got told no, it will be fish fingers for money reasons and then mum gets caviar.

Of course OP didn't do it in the end.

SoWhite · 01/12/2015 17:26

I wasn't referring to the OP, I was referring to a number of other martyrs on this thread.

SoWhite · 01/12/2015 17:28

Particularly the ones who believe that monetary value directly relates to a person's 'worth' in the family.

I'm more of the belief that the equality comes from everybody getting their own choice.

Agree with you regarding the OP though.

OhSoggyBiscuit · 01/12/2015 17:29

Er, the parents are the one going out and working for the money to feed, clothe and buy Christmas and birthday presents for the child, why wouldn't they buy the advent calendar they want?

VulcanWoman · 01/12/2015 17:31

I'm not sure if Tesco put the wrong price on but I got my son a Cadbury and a Malteser one, £1 each.

Merguez · 01/12/2015 19:01

Mumsnet admin You have spelled 'calendar' wrong in the title under Discussions of the Day.

I know it's rude and pedantic to point it out when posters make spelling or grammar errors, but surely MN editors should aspire to be correct?

goodnessgraciousgoudaoriginal · 01/12/2015 19:08

Hell no.

If I wasn't pregnant I would have totally bought myself a rum advent calender!!!

That's not something a kid can appreciate....... Grin
