WIBU to have a nicer advent calendar than the Dc?!

They've got malteaser ones after we went shopping and chose, saying they couldn't all have the £10 Lindt ones - £30 on advent calendars seems ridiculous!
But now I want the Hotel Chocolat one and id feel really mean spending £12.50 on mine now.
This really is a first world problem Grin

into I really don't make you feel bad, and you shouldn't feel about about your dairy free calendar, that will mean so much to your kids.

I'm sorry my original post made you feel bad, it was meant to to be light-hearted. My DH bought me the calendar as a gift (December birthday).

I can't imagine how hard it must be for you in your situation, but it sounds like your DCs have a loving mum which is about 90% of what they need x

RhiWrites · 29/11/2015 22:01

Do all these advent calendars have stuff in? Not just a picture behind a door? They've really moved on from my childhood!

I don't have one and neither does the cat.

ijustwanttobeme · 29/11/2015 22:04

I've bought DS, DP and DSS (34 years old) an advent calendar, as I do every year. I never usually get one for myself. That's not me being martyrish, it's just I don't buy one, as I eat enough chocolate as it is!

Last year I promised myself I'd treat myself to a beauty advent calendar, so this year I ordered the Boots No7 one.

No ones quibbled, or moaned about any two tier spending going on - they want bite size chocolate, I wanted mini make up and skin care - all good.

theycallmemellojello · 29/11/2015 22:08

I agree that it would be super mean to buy yourself a nicer calendar than the kids! Why is it a waste of money to buy nice chocolate for them and not for you? I'd judge anyone who did this.

Pixa · 29/11/2015 22:16

Get one! My DH bought me one this evening, and I am so looking forward to Tuesday. We also bought some of their medium size Christmas crackers for the table on Christmas day. Grin

Paintedhandprints · 29/11/2015 22:23

Err, we have one advent calendar and take it in turns opening the doors.

RomComPhooey · 29/11/2015 22:27

I bought myself a Neideregger marzipan one in John Lewis. It was about £13. Kids have M&S star wars ones, £2.50 each. I have kept mine at work so DH doesn't nick my chocs.

Unreasonablebetty · 29/11/2015 22:29

I've not read the whole thread, but let me tell you how it works, when you buy children an expensive advent calendar, they don't see the difference at all- we've always had hotel chocolate ones.
white for DD milk for DH,
I only ever had I be when they did the couples one where you got a surprise chocolate each day.

Sorry I've gone off track, DD didn't realise the quality difference whereas you do.
Christmas Day is for them. Enjoy your calendar , they only care that they're getting chocolate xx

CakeNinja · 29/11/2015 22:29

Well theycall it's all okay as I'm not getting it so no need to judge me.
I bought theirs a few days ago, no question of me getting one. I didn't plan on buying one for myself. Only when I was out shopping today did I see the HC one and think "ooh that looks nice, but actually..."

It's not really about the nice chocolate, they wanted the malteaser ones, dds eye was drawn to the Lindt one and, I'm not sure if she even asked for it to be honest, but I just said I wasn't spending £30 on advent calendars. That was the extent of the conversation.

I wasn't planning at the time that I was going to get myself a more expensive one, it genuinely didn't occur to me until today when I saw it.

"Don't worry all, I didn't get one and I'm not going to!"

We're only on page 3! That's not in the spirit of AIBU. Come out fighting!

Unreasonablebetty · 29/11/2015 22:31

Cakeninja-
As someone who's bought my daughter hotel chocolate calendars every year, until last year when the child told me she must have a £1 frozen one (traitor!!) I WILL judge you if you don't allow yourself that luxury, the kids won't even care come 1st December.

SistersOfPercy · 29/11/2015 22:32

My friend bought me the Star Wars one from pound land I think. It's kinnerton chocolate though which is absolutely awful I think. I'll save the chocolate for Ds when he's over at the weekend and just enjoy the pictures. Grin

CakeNinja · 29/11/2015 22:36

Haha funnily enough I have other Hotel Chocolat in the cupboards anyway, I usually do, and the dc eat it as much as we do!
Saucy, I think I said in my second post that I wasn't getting one, sorry to disappoint Grin
Kinnerton chocolate is an abomination. My dc would be entitled to judge me if I had bought them those!

RomComPhooey · 29/11/2015 22:36

We had the Hotel Chocolat one year. It was ok, but meh. The best one was the Niederegger on I bought for me & DH in TK Maxx 2 years ago - it had so much chocolate/marzipan that DH and I had a good stash each day. It was properly heavy, like a real box of chocs. The best thing was that it had been mispriced - £13 instead of £25.

SistersOfPercy · 29/11/2015 23:26

My Ds has cast iron tastebuds I think so will happily eat kinnerton (he's 22).
Shame it's so vile really as I do like the mugs etc they bundle it with.

I suspect my Cadbury one will be a bit meh this year if it's anything like the dairy milk 😞

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 29/11/2015 23:35

Many years ago, ds was given a Lego one. He has carefully put the bits back in the box and used it again each year since...

This year, he kept demanding a chocolate one. So I got them a chocolate one each.

And I treated myself to a Lego one. But they will get loads more presents than I do!

And I am sure inwillmend up sharing my lego one...

pineappleshortbread · 30/11/2015 04:05

I gave my the son the choice in wilkos. He chose 90p frozen ones for him and his brother and i choose 1.99 cadburys for me and dh.

Dont care that mines dearer he didnt want the cadburys one he liked frozen thought it was amazing 😁

WorldsBiggestGrotbag · 30/11/2015 04:20

I have the Yankee candle one and a Thorntons one and my DC don't have one at all Wink.
DD1 is 2 and too young to understand that you can only have one a day and have to sit and look at it the rest of the time, and DD2 is 4 months and therefore too young anyway.
DH doesn't have one either.

Cliffdiver · 30/11/2015 05:52

DD1, DD2, DH and DSD got Mars/Milkybar which were 2 for £3. Plus a traditional one for DD1&2 to share (which they will probably show no interest in as no chocolate Grin) I got a Yankee Candle one which was £22.

steff13 · 30/11/2015 06:12

I tried to by myself this one, but it was out of stock at my local store. :(

JemimaMuddledUp · 30/11/2015 06:17

I have the Yankee Candle one, which cost £25.

The DC have wooden ones which are refilled every year at a cost of around £1 per child.

In my defence the wooden calendars cost around £25 in the first place. Plus the DC are welcome to share the smell of my candles Grin

sharonthewaspandthewineywall · 30/11/2015 07:25

My advent calendar cost far more than the kids.
Im in control of the purse strings, I go out to earn they money and when christmas day comes they have a pile of gifts off me and their Dad while we dont so how on earth are they hard done by? Confused

SoWhite · 30/11/2015 10:37

That's how I feel too sharon.

Cannot be doing with all this martyr parenting. Of course the children aren't hard done by, with their piles of toys on Christmas day.

Buy yourself a sodding treat every now and then, no strings attached. You'll be less uptight for it.

SaucyJack · 30/11/2015 11:03

I guess that ^^ depends on whether you think advent calendars are supposed to be a treat for grown-ups or kids. In my gaff, they're definitely a kids thing- which is why I'd never spend 5 times the amount on ones for me and DP.

Be like getting a babysitter so you could go to see the new Disney Princess film in peace. Weird and mean.
