In thinking there has been a massive cover up in the death of little Poppi Worthington ?? [Upsetting content warning added by MNHQ]

I've namechanged for this as i'm local to the town this baby is from.

I cannot believe the huge fuck ups that have occured in investigating this childs death, this child had broken bones and other injuries indicating a serious sexual assault......no clear way of knowing as all evidence had been destroyed by the time police decided to investigate 9 months later. I cannot believe how little this has been reported in the media now the case is coming to court.

To top it all, nobody is being prosecuted for this babies death, not for the injuries sustained. She's dead, that's it. How can this be ?? I don't understand how this is able to happen ??!

I've linked one of the least, distressing articles. This really is one of the most upsetting cases i've heard of. I cannot believe that someone is in all probability getting away with the murder of this little girl. www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/child-protection/12019722/Poppi-Worthington-Toddler-could-have-been-sexually-assaulted-before-unexplained-death-hearing-told.html

I couldn't agree more TwllBach. I'm a teacher and hoy, as such I'm responsible for some very vulnerable students. It is incredibly frustrating working with child protection services. Trying to request a support from a service at early intervention stage is such a hit and miss. Half the time I'm told to start a CAF, which should be co-authored by the other services (family support are the worst at not contributing), when I protest that parents won't sign the CAF, sometimes they ask if they verbally consented (?), then I get told to complete it anyway. That huge document is totally wasted as, by the time I've submitted it, the CP office have changed their mind and want it signed. I can work with a child for months and try to liaise with the other teams supporting them, but people are 'out of the office' or dont respond to emails. By the time I get to TAC meetings I should have a good idea of the situation, but then if someone from family or child services turn up, they finally tell you another huge chunk of information that completely alters the case.

Quietlifenotonyournelly · 29/11/2015 07:42

Poor baby, how anyone could hurt a baby or child is completely beyond me. I feel sick to the stomach Sad Angry

GruntledOne · 29/11/2015 08:29

It does seem utterly extraordinary that there was no proper investigation when she had a twin sister, concerns had been raised by at least one doctor, and there were, so far as I can tell, four other children in the house.

GloGirl · 29/11/2015 08:33

Holy hell. That child had no voice.

I look at my own young children and think, if I couldn't take care of them I want society to. I don't fucking understand how that baby died and no one cared. No one was outraged.

How the fuck did a baby die, in an unexplained way with previous unexplained injuries and it went NINE MONTHS before the people who she lived with were questioned? !

How did an inquest last SEVEN MINUTES.

How did no one give a shit?

I am normally so disenchanted with the press, but reading the article, maybe it was self serving but thank fuck someone was trying to get more done and get more understood.

That really is one of the most depressing things I've ever read.

howtorebuild · 29/11/2015 08:43

Very depressing what ever the cause, the police didn't bother doing their job properly. Poor baby.

Duckdeamon · 29/11/2015 08:47

Is the Police Complaints Commission investigating? If not they should be. And the social services inspectorate too.

minesapintofwine · 29/11/2015 08:47

Poor poor Poppi. Rip sweetheart Sad

rainydaygrey · 29/11/2015 08:54

7 minutes and an "unexplained death". Good God.

P1nkP0ppy · 29/11/2015 08:55

It reduces me to tears, my two year old DGS is playing next to me.....
I just don't understand how anyone could do this, beyond my comprehension.
How and why wasn't the abuse picked up before?

IdrisElbasJacket · 29/11/2015 08:55

That is just beyond horrific. I feel winded reading that- god that poor child.
I don't understand the legal side of things from here on in- can they not prosecute the parents now? Or is it too late because of the police completely messing up the case?

Hepzibar · 29/11/2015 09:17

The local authority will have to carry out a Serious Case Review which should identify why the abuse wasn't picked up before Pinkpoppy.

I'm a Safeguarding Officer in Education and totally agree with the two teachers up thread regarding early help and the CAF procedure (ludicrously time consuming to often little effect).

At the other end of the thresholds - when significant harm is suspected, the 3 local authorities I deal with all swing into action immediately (much improved over the last few years).

I sent a referral in at lunch time on Friday, by 3.30 police and social services were holding a Strategy Meeting and the young person was taken into emergency accommodation whilst police begun investigations.

WelshMoth · 29/11/2015 09:28

I can't read it, I really can't.
I'm forever haunted by what I read in the summer on the historical sex abuse thread here on MN.

Why, oh why can't this be followed up? 7 minutes devoted to this little baby's memory?

Can the public demand a fuller inquest? Can we push for more action?
The more I read, the more I lose faith in the system we have here in the UK, in the Western world even.

Am fucking appalled, hurting and grieving for a little girl that none of even knew. Am starting to understand the motivation for vigilante movements now. I'm quickly losing faith in our welfare and legal system.

Sleep tight little Poppi.

WelshMoth · 29/11/2015 09:31

...none of us

hiddenhome2 · 29/11/2015 09:51

Unfortunately, incompetence and laziness are rife and affect all organisations, including the police. Children have no voice and nobody to speak up for them. Many fall through the net.

ToddlerTantrums · 29/11/2015 10:07

How can this have happened? I'd never even heard of this little girl before this thread. Absolutely heartbreaking.
Something needs to be done urgently for more transparency within social
Services as I'm sure they have a lot of red tape hindering them, it's just not good enough that children are missed to this degree.

howtorebuild · 29/11/2015 10:32

What is it with the SS scapegoating? The police, the judicial system were the primary ones at fault here.

In my experience the police are Shite, lazy and incompetent as posted above. To add to that fucking misogynistic in my experience, personally and anecdotally. A particular favourite used by one force for many women is to lie, say the woman is mentally ill to avoid the woman viewing their lies, then refuse to investigate complaints. They let DV woman targets and their children down, using the mentally unwell card, often based on zero evidence, it's cover up boys so we don't have to put resources in.

MissFitt68 · 29/11/2015 11:21

Why did the post mortem take so long?

Can't see it being a 'cover up', sounds like inexperienced officers/incompetence. 3 years on, it's not too late for justice for Poppi.

BreadAndOliveOil · 29/11/2015 12:30

It's only come to light now because the other children were removed from the house and the parents took it to court to.try and get them back.

This little girls story needs to be heard, it's almost like a case of oh we fucked up. Better keep that quiet then. Ss can't be to blame in this case, the blame lies with the legal system and it's repeated failures in getting justice for this child.

MissFitt68 · 29/11/2015 12:42

where did you read all that? Haven't seen that anywhere, just the mothers eldest was adopted due to her being an alcoholic

wickedlazy · 29/11/2015 12:55

Poor poppi. She'll certainly be in my thoughts. Such a horrible death. What the hell really happened here? The authorities seemed to have been so blaise. Who was in charge of autopsy and results? So many unanswered questions. Sad That poor little girl.

Toraleistripe · 29/11/2015 13:04

Wait for the SCR. I personally think this was more of a police fuck up than social services. That is what seems to have been suggested.

wickedlazy · 29/11/2015 13:13

This is what makes me think my ds will never be "poor". I might be a bit skint occassionaly but he'll never be poor. He has me looking out for him and keeping his best interests in mind all the time . Where was the mother in all this? Agree with a pp, if anything happened to me and I couldn't care for ds, I hope someone would. To think someone could to that to their own child is terrifying. I trust dp 100% but then are there other people who could possibly take the opportunity if it came Sad and I suppose you couldn't even guess who. They're saying now 1 in 5 girls have been sexually abused. That's 12 girls in ds's year group alone. 84 little girls in a full school assembly. And 21 of the little boys :( the perps, most of them are known by the children. And still have access to children or will again soon..They aren't "strangers". What percentage of adults in a ten mile radius have sexually abused kids? Sad

MissFitt68 · 29/11/2015 13:19

Who knows wicked this is one reason I'm reluctant to allow the 'sleepover' culture to take hold with my DC ( a whole other thread I realise)

Crazybaglady · 29/11/2015 13:22

Can mumsnet start a petition to have this reviewed??!

wickedlazy · 29/11/2015 13:23

Wouldn't say it's a whole other thread. Relevant in that were any other children abused by whoever did this to the little girl? If there were other children or other childrens friends in and out of house surely they need to check and offer support. Police have handled this arse about face. Don't like the thought of a neighbour inviting ds to a sleepover then finding out the dad had done this?
