To think M&S should reconsider their branding

on this?

I was Christmas shopping yesterday and spotted loads of fragrance/body wash products with this branding Confused. It was all half price but surely they wont sell much with that name? I understand that this was probably thought up before the Islamic extremist group came into the public eye... But there's no way someone at M&S HQ hasn't noticed and suggested renaming it, surely?

I love the name Isis.

CrossfireHurricane · 28/11/2015 08:51

I thought it was the river that flows through Oxford also.
Will that have to be changed?

Vango rebranded it's "Isis" tent to "Iris" at the beginning of this year.

Sallyingforth · 28/11/2015 09:16

I've been calling them Daesh, on here and elsewhere.

And it's particularly weird that BBC reporters always call them "so-called Islamic State". Apparently it's a political decision by some bigwig there.

timelytess · 28/11/2015 09:18

Rather than have M+S change the name, perhaps we should use it more frequently, so that it loses its connection with extreme views.

IsabellaofFrance · 28/11/2015 09:24

I was reading this book on the bus yesterday!

I would definitely 'notice' the name and probably titter over it (not that ISIS is a laughing matter but hopefully you kwim).

But it wouldn't put me off buying it. I agree with someone downthread that said M&S probably have it on offer to clear out and re-brand it. It's not really...appropriate...to have your products named after the Worlds most prominent terrorist group, even if your product was named first.

That's why they killed off poor old Isis on Downton!

murmuration · 28/11/2015 09:50

No. I think we should keep using Isis in its original meaning and not let a terrorist organisation take over a beautiful name. The more it is used elsewhere the less associated it will be.

How do you think HP would have reacted if a new broom was brought out and called 'The Voldemort'? Do you think he'd have used it? I don't.

You don't have to have fear of a name to want no connections with it.

SuffolkNWhat · 28/11/2015 10:01

Personally I don't think Harry would have a problem seeing as he was happy to use the name unlike the majority of the wizarding world Wink

Comingfoccacia · 28/11/2015 10:01

I worked for IS Magazine in the 90's but that has also changed its name. I've also had to update my CV.....!

manicinsomniac · 28/11/2015 10:08

There's an independent school near me that has 'endorsed by ISIS' on its sign - I keep wondering if that will get changed.

Are you sure? Most independent schools are inspected by ISI (Independent schools' inspectorate) but I've never heard of ISIS in relation to a school. Could the sign say 'endorsed by ISI'?

I don't think M and S should change. I also don't think people should stop calling their children Isis. It's a really pretty name with a lovely meaning. Murderers shouldn't get to take it.

Sallyingforth · 28/11/2015 10:39

If we followed the European trend to calling the terrorists Daesh, there would no longer be a problem.
Couldn't we all do that here on MN, and in our own lives?

MaidOfStars · 28/11/2015 11:25

I really like the name Isis and I don't have any strong feelings on the use of it in branded products.

I wonder how many Iras there are in the UK and Ireland?

Helenluvsrob · 28/11/2015 16:04

Reclaim the lovely name Isis ! I've said it before and I'll say it again. To me it is an Egyptian goddess, the Thames in Oxford and the most amazing little girl I know. It is not a terrorist organisation. There is no Islamic state
