So not only do we have baby showers but now America are doing sprinkle showers.

A mini baby shower for your second, third etc etc etc baby.

But just a 'sprinkle' the essentials apparently.

And you know a friend of a friend in the UK will think it's a good idea and then their friend will pay back the favour and before we know it, we're as bad as America.

Sprinkle party not shower for fucksake.

Was definitely a 'thing' when I lived in the US ten years ago. Not come over here yet!

Funnily enough, I have never been invited to a baby shower. And I certainly didn't have one!

But nah, it's just a different culture. It won't properly catch on here. It might be replicated but you won't ever get the same thing as a US baby shower, which I've come to appreciate since I've been in Germany amongst all of the Americans. It's really just an excuse to get together and eat potato salad and drink wine (except the pregnant lady, of course) and yes some people give presents at the shower, but IME of being here, most of the Brits hold back and give a present after the baby is born. People do one or the other, not both.

I find it bizarre, a girl i know had one for her second... Who was born just short of 12 months after her first!

Showers, smashed cake thingies, sprinkles, naming ceremonies - the whole lot make me shudder.

At any rate, they take the tradition and fuck it up here. People throwing their own shower, having them at spas, inviting couples, having them at night, having showers for subsequent children, etc etc.

When we lived in the US we used to get asked how we celebrated Thanksgiving in the UK. I kid you not... That one has NOT crossed the Atlantic.

mummymeister you aren't the only one who thought that. My mind went straight to watersports.

There's a lot of room for misunderstandings if these do catch on - half the guests will arrive with those cakes made out of nappies, and half will arrive bearing rubber sheets and a hopeful smile.

(I've never understood the appeal of watersports.)

Haha lumelaMme it does not surprise me! I did see quite an alarming amount of American-themed stuff around last 4th of July though... particularly on FB and in supermarkets. People need to do their history!

I love it! All apart from the name! Why not call it a baby shower like for the first.

I am not sure what's not to like, food, presents, lovely.

To be fair, the baby shower as a way for a community to support a new family is very practical. By which I mean the mum to be or dad to be sending round a list of what they will need and a group of friends and relatives each bringing an item or two of essentials. Attended one recently and it was lovely, some people brought nappies and cotton buds, others clothes and toys, food etc. Some treats for mum too e.g. bubble bath and choccies. Mum and Dad were chuffed and relieved. It's quite a regular thing amongst people I know tbh, it would be more weird not to have one. I think a baby shower for a second or third etc. is also a good idea if the family are financially in a tight spot. I think the real issue is when people get competitive with gift giving or people ask for gifts that are unreasonable!

I just assumed it was to celebrate having a boy. because i am SURE I recall someone telling me that 'boys sprinkle and girls tinkle'.
