My Dd is in Y11 and is a hardworking girl who just gets on with her work. She always in the top 5 in class and is well regarded by staff and other pupils

Yesterday 2 boys from her year ( not her class) took her coursework book from the classroom and then burned it on their way home from school. One of these bright boys took a video of the burning.

There were rumours around school will day until eventually Dd realised it was her book. She is devasted at the lost coursework and school don't seem to have reacted at all .

I will of course be going in tomorrow

Besides trying to stop myself from skinning the little bastards hides what can I expect school to be doing ?

Don't threaten to go to the police - just do it. Let them know you have reported it. I always support parents with police action and liaise with our link officers.

Don't go to the press - that's just pointless and vindictive. It's not like the headteacher sat and burned the work.

justkeepongoing · 24/11/2015 21:44

Design and Technology do course work.

Curioushorse · 24/11/2015 21:44

Apologies. I got distracted and wandered off in the middle of writing that post and so didn't see your update.

Several things:

  1. Some of my above points still stand. Was it definitely coursework? It does seem strange for coursework to be done in books. And, also, for coursework to be done at all at GCSE. (hopeful!)
  2. If it was coursework, the exam boards absolutely have procedures in place for this sort of crazy scenario....and they tend to be very good with it, in my experience. The school should be on top of this.
  3. I work in the private sector, but even when I was in the state sector it would be hard not to permanently exclude these students.
BoneyBackJefferson · 24/11/2015 21:45

Curioushorse

The OP says that the book was taken from the classroom not that the DD took it home with her.

The JCQ has different levels of requirements for controlled assessment, some must be done under exam conditions, some in the classroom and some at home.

OP

I hope that you get this sorted to your satisfaction, but the exam board is likely to want her to do it again.

flanjabelle · 24/11/2015 21:46

Fucking arseholes. Your poor dd. No wonder you are so upset op. the school need to come down hard!

pinechesterdrawers · 24/11/2015 21:47

wow, thats shocking and dangerous.

what on earth is wrong with those boys??? id definitely expect the police to be involved in some way, at the very least, criminal damage!

CFSsucks · 24/11/2015 21:48

That is disgusting. I'd be expecting the school to come down hard and I'd be telling them that. Your poor DD. I'd also be asking them what they plan to do as there is no way your DD will be redoing her work.

WelshMoth · 24/11/2015 21:52

Secondary school teachers here.
I hope to God the school takes a hard line here.
Flowers to your poor DD.

Curioushorse · 24/11/2015 21:55

Curses justkeepongoing. You're absolutely right!

Ah well, it was worth a shot. OP, I hope it works out and that you're able to reassure your daughter a little bit. It'll be fine.

If this happened to one of our Year 11s right now, I can just imagine the hysteria. I actually save my CA marks to dropbox as well as the school's intranet, because I'm so paranoid about keeping students' marks safe!

Brioche201 · 24/11/2015 21:57

what subject was it?

Freezingwinter · 24/11/2015 21:58

What horrid little arses Shock and your poor Dd. I hope that she is ok Chocolate

Crazypetlady · 24/11/2015 22:03

What awful twats. They are MORE than old enough to understand.
I agree you need to contact the police and exam board if the school don't react try to copy the video too. Even if you have to take a video of a video.

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 24/11/2015 22:05

Keep us updated, op?

I have no advice different to what others have already given, but I would love to know the outcome for your DD please.

Fingers crossed for her, that she gets the outcome she needs.

And YABU. Damage is too good for the little scrotes! They need a horrible, painful and expensive punishment. I have no idea what!

HicDraconis · 24/11/2015 22:13

YABU.

Your DD should not have to repeat anything - the school need to liaise with the exam boards and her marks for coursework should be recorded somewhere.

As far as the little sods go - police. Theft, vandalism, destruction of property, malicious communications (given it was filmed). I'd be pushing for permanent exclusion, how dare they get away with anything lesser.

If I were the parent of a boy who had done this, my child would be grounded with no internet, electronic or other privileges for several months. I would be beyond furious with them - I hope their parents feel similarly, but I suspect not.

Flowers for your poor DD. I really hope it gets resolved properly.

HicDraconis · 24/11/2015 22:14

YANBU! whoops. NNNNNNNNN. Definitely N.

Topseyt · 24/11/2015 22:19

What a pair of horrendous shits.

I hope the school expels them (I know, it is permanently exclude) and sorts things out for your DD with the exam board.

If you don't get satisfaction then ask for the name of their usual contact at the exam board, so that you can query it directly.

Iwanttokillthem · 24/11/2015 22:25

I couldn't speak to the school today - and they made no effort to speak to me neither. :(

I will call first thing and arrange a proper meeting with the head after school as that will give them time to have started some sort of proceedings. I won't contact the police first though - much as I want to because I don't know the whole story yet despite the outcome. If school drags their heels though that will be my next port of call after the meeting. I will tell them this as I leave I think. Plus obviously the board of governors if the head is not helpful.

I have a copy of the video so that's safe. Just the standard teenagers guffawing over a ' prank' with total disregard about the effects of their actions.

I am such a bad Mum I don't actually know what exactly was in the book ,just that it's a science subject and had a lot of ' important stuff' in it thats all gone. I'm rubbish at this sort of subject so didn't ask and wasn't told about it. DD was coping well with it though so didn't need my help.

OP posts:
Corygal · 24/11/2015 22:28

That's malice aforethought among other things - junky little losers. Keep an eye on what procedure the school takes & refer upwards if nec.

Pigeonpost · 24/11/2015 22:29

What absolute little fuckers. I do think you need to call the police though, irrespective of what the school say/do. How is your daughter now?

comfortblankie · 24/11/2015 22:30

Do not let this go! It's theft and bullying.

When I was in secondary, one of my books was taken by some brats and thrown up onto a high window ledge. Nobody from the school would take responsibility, and my Dad had an awful job trying to source a replacement copy because it was out of print.

I can't imagine how I would have felt if it was something important that I was working on towards my exams!

VagueIdeas · 24/11/2015 22:34

That is SO malicious. I'd wager they know she's the high achieving sort and that's why they did it. No point burning some random person's coursework. For all they know (although this will not be the case) they've destroyed her chances at getting a top grade. Evil.

Happfeet2911 · 24/11/2015 22:35

I'm with you, let's sort the little fuckers out!! Don't actually want to kill them but let them suffer for a while! We are now about be be roasted alive by the 'kids are gods' club, frankly I don't give a shit!!xx

Spellcaster · 24/11/2015 22:38

School disciplinary procedures are totally separate from criminal procedures. Why wait for the school? They will just try and convince you not to go down the crime reporting route as it reflects so badly on the school. Report the £%-# you have a video of them as evidence! And make it very clear DD will not be re doing any work whatsoever!

Wolfiefan · 24/11/2015 22:38

Could it be preparation for controlled assessment rather than the piece itself. Shoddy of the school though.

LuluJakey1 · 24/11/2015 22:40

It doesn't sound like coursework. If it is, the problem will be if the school has not marked it. Then they will be asked to estimate a grade based on prior evidence of similar work. That might or might not be in her favour. But don't be fobbed off with her having to do it again.
