To absolutely hate winter?

I don't mind the run up to Christmas as the lights and anticipation make it bearable, but January and February?? No! I have no energy and no mojo to make it better. I try so hard to make resolutions - read lots, go to the gym, declutter, plan new menus etc. but it never happens. All I want to do is hibernate.
I do love seeing snow fall (and then hate all the stress of driving in it), but mostly it is damp, dark, grey and cold.
It can't be right to hate a good chunk of the year? What is good about it?

I'm with you. Give me 25C and long days at the beach any time. I hate itchy jumpers and clumpy boots and being cold. Christmas, OK, but the depressing week between Christmas and new year and then January and February sucks. At least this year I'm on maternity leave so don't have to go out to work at silly o'clock. But there are no nice walks in the park and teddy bears picnics either like with DS2 when it was July. Winter is meh.

SirChenjin · 22/11/2015 21:45

Shall I start a Countdown to the Winter Solstice thread for all of us winter haters?! It's a brilliant day - knowing that the crap of winter will end and spring is coming

pinotblush · 22/11/2015 21:48

I also hate Jan and Feb. Horrible months.

Leelu6 · 22/11/2015 21:48

I dread winter but always imagine it's going to be worse than it is. I wrap up I like live in Siberia.

Before I kniw it, it's March :) (but still bloody cold).

ExBallerina · 22/11/2015 21:49

Yanbu. I like sweaters and that's all. Winter is just miserable.

Where I am we have the lawn covered in snow. It best be gone by Valentine's Day, let me tell YOU Angry

BaronessSamedi · 22/11/2015 21:50

oh i forgot - always have to keep a tissue to hand because my nose starts running the minute i step outside. and when i go indoors again.
hates it, i do.

Topseyt · 22/11/2015 22:01

Isn't one of the reasons that Christmas, as a pagan festival, was fixed in the middle of winter likely to have been because a feast was needed to lighten up this gloomy and drab time?

RoseWithoutAThorn · 22/11/2015 22:09

I don't mind winter really except for the snow! I love the winter solstice and Yule, frosty mornings, and cuddling up in front of the fire.

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 22/11/2015 22:13

I could've written your OP, OP. I fucking hate winter. Hate it. From October to March I feel like complete and utter shit. January and February are the worst but it's already bad and has been for well over a month. Seriously thinking of going to see my GP but worried I'd be wasting their time. I mean, it's not as if they can prescribe a dose of sunshine and warmth for me to pick up from the chemists, is it? Hmm

FunnysInLaJardin · 22/11/2015 22:17

vitamin D folks. Vitamin D!

Bunbaker · 22/11/2015 22:18

SoftKitty a light box is supposed to be very helpful.

People go on about frosty bright mornings.

We get approximately 2 or 3 of those every winter. Most of the time it is cloudy and dank and gloomy. It is that kind of weather that is so blooming miserable.

SirChenjin · 22/11/2015 22:19

What I really, really hate are the people who trill and tra-la about how wonderful winter is, and how the snow is such fun! when everyone else is fucked off freezing cold commutes, praying they're not going to crash on icy roads, worrying about heating bills, emergency childcare plans, and so on. I can only imagine they don't actually have to venture more than 20 metres from their house and that someone else brings them their groceries.

Look at my name ^
I don't cope well with the cold at all.

SirChenjin · 22/11/2015 22:29

Agree usual.

Bunbaker · 22/11/2015 22:30

Nor do they have to worry about keeping the house warm, drying washing etc.

HelenaDove · 22/11/2015 22:30

I used to love winter although sometimes got very depressed in Jan/Feb.

Hate it now and this time ive been really down since the clocks went back.
Ive lost lots of weight and really feel the cold now.

Plus i live in an HA flat and live in fear of the hot water/heating going wrong and them taking ages to fix it.

SwedishEdith · 22/11/2015 22:31

Oh, I love winter! What I don't like about Jan and Feb is knowing the Spring is coming.

thedevilinmyshoes · 22/11/2015 22:31

I work outside for most of the day most days a week. Do find many aspects of winter hard (have a lot of trouble with feeling cold, poor circulation and raynauds) but tend to feel better when thinking about things that are nice about it or that make it more bearable. Suspect being outdoors so much maximises exposure to what sunlight there is, however weak, that must help my mood?

SirChenjin · 22/11/2015 22:33

What exactly do you love about the winter Edith? I wonder if you're affected in any way by the things that have mentioned on here - high fuel bills, treacherous commutes, icy roads, schools closing and having to find emergency childcare, less that sympathetic bosses etc etc etc?

G1veMeStrength · 22/11/2015 22:33

I hate winter. I hate the lack of light. Even by 2pm the light has changed to that crap depressing light that says 'you may as well get into your pyjamas now, the best of the day has gone'.

I can bear the cold slightly better now I have ski trousers and a millions hats and really good gloves. But overall i just hate it.

ilovesooty · 22/11/2015 22:39

I absolutely hate winter and from the beginning of October I'm counting down the days until March. I hate snow, the cold, ice, the dark mornings and evenings and worrying about driving.
I loathe Halloween, bonfire night and Christmas as well.

SwedishEdith · 22/11/2015 22:41

I love the darkness. I love cold weather. Yes, I drive and take a train to commute. Yes, schools have sometimes been closed due to weather.

I just like the cosiness, prefer the clothes (hate summer clothing) and eat tasty food regardless of the season. Yes, I'm not living in poverty so don't worry about paying fuel bills so I'm lucky there. But, not sure I need to justify a preference for one season over another.

HelenaDove · 22/11/2015 22:41

The one good thing about being overweight (which im not anymore) is it kept me warmer in winter.

Im bloody cold now

Fluffyears · 22/11/2015 22:43

Every new year I feel tearful as all I can see is 2 1/2 months of darkness with nothing to look forward to at all. I actually feel panicky and desperate once Christmas has passed. Fuck winter!
