To think the "but there might be a terrorist attack" doomsayers should stfu

PourquoiTuGachesTaVie · 22/11/2015 16:38

Because they are in fact spreading terror. Hmm I've seen it on here and elsewhere loads. Christmas eve shopping, black Friday sales, concerts, tube journeys... basically, we can't do anything anymore because there might be a terrorist attack... oh no... wait.... that's not right is it?

I also don't think the preppers board is helping either

Supermanspants · 22/11/2015 19:03

You should stfu OP and appreciate people are justifiably scared and as has already been pointed out it is VERY topical. It is very likely there will be another attack.

HortonWho · 22/11/2015 19:10

OP, how is that anxiety?

Feb 2015 - al Shabaab post video about specifically targeting shopping centres

Foiled attack - couple on trial, we're trying to decide between Westfield's or a tube.

IwishIwasinNewYork · 22/11/2015 19:11

I just don't think it was a constructive way of putting it, OP.

It's legitimate to be fearful at the moment.

I am used to going on the tube and into central London every day so I'm not unduly worried. People who are not used to going into city centres etc, are going to feel more vulnerable.

It's not big and clever to look down at people who are voicing their fears.

Yes there are some drama queens and some scare mongers, but most are airing their worries and actually probably seeking some reassurance and solidarity - not after being told to STFU.

Helmetbymidnight · 22/11/2015 19:13

I am a worrier. I'm also one of twenty million people living/working in London.

Yeah, carry on with the 'everyone should avoid London' shit.
It's a really, really important message to get across.

Helmetbymidnight · 22/11/2015 19:16

I can't believe people are still saying 'there is very likely to be another attack'-
Do you actually think no one knows this? We all know it - sheeesh.

Mistigri · 22/11/2015 19:18

It's not legitimate to be fearful if at the same time you regularly get into a car and drive a ton or so of steel at high speeds. Many times more people will die this year in car accidents in Europe than will die in terrorist attacks.

It's legitimate to be vigilant, for sure, although vigilance doesn't really help against the sort of attacks perpetrated in Paris.

I'm inclined to say that objectively, if there is a single biggest threat to the future security of UK citizens, then it is probably this week's budget statement and the proposed cuts to the policing budget.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 22/11/2015 19:20

Helmet, your reality is that you live and work in London. But also the reality is that you shoukdn't want to/can't shut debate up from people who are worried about a terrorist attack in London. Do you think Londons close neighbour, Paris, should stfu too?

Helmetbymidnight · 22/11/2015 19:22

It IS legitimate to be more fearful of a terrorist attack.
I have carefully gone over various ways of dying (late at night) and I can tell you I would categorically prefer a stupid car accident than to be deliberately murdered in a terror attack.

Btw- did you know we are likely to have a terrorist attack?

Supermanspants · 22/11/2015 19:23

It was in response to the OP Helmet as clearly she/he does not care that much for the fact that people are generally worried and scared. Not sure what your issue is with the comment

Helmetbymidnight · 22/11/2015 19:24

Er no. I am clearly talking about a quite specific kind of discussion.

Did you know there will be a terrorist attack here soon?

SummerNights1986 · 22/11/2015 19:29

Many times more people will die this year in car accidents in Europe than will die in terrorist attacks

We hope. Not that I hope a lot of people die in car accidents of course, but it is practical to acknowledge that that is fairly unavoidable.

Whether the amount of people that die in terrorist attacks will exceed that this year can't be guaranteed unless you have a crystal ball.

BathtimeFunkster · 22/11/2015 19:33

It's not legitimate to be fearful if at the same time you regularly get into a car and drive a ton or so of steel at high speeds

Hmm

It's not "legitimate"?

Fucking legitimate??

Are you kidding?

Sure, people's perception of risk is usually askew.

But no fucker gets to decide that people's fears of something they are being told is "highly likely" are "illegitimate".

What kind of arrogant bullshit is that?

The fact that they could "legitimately" fear other things more does not mean you get to make blanket declarations about the "illegitimacy" of their fears of terrorist attacks.

What does it even mean for a fear to be "illegitimate"? Confused

Unfounded I can see.

Even irrational.

But illefuckinggitimate?

WTF?

maybebabybee · 22/11/2015 19:33

Yanbu. I hate this. I have an anxiety disorder and the speculation and hysteria makes it ten times worse.

PourquoiTuGachesTaVie · 22/11/2015 19:38

Perhaps there are people (some may even have anxiety) who know what has happened and are aware of what may happen but would like to think about something else for a while. But they can't because people keep spreading fear.

OP posts:
PourquoiTuGachesTaVie · 22/11/2015 19:40

Xpost with Maybe. Exactly what I'm trying to say.

OP posts:
limitedperiodonly · 22/11/2015 19:41

I don't get unduly worried about it, which is good, seeing as I live and work in Central London.

But what really does piss me off as much as the panickers are the smug people on MN who declare that curtailing your activities or having a bit of a wobble about Christmas shopping in Oxford Street is 'letting the terrorists win.'

I guarantee you that my final thought won't be that I blazed a trail for freedom if I'm staring down the barrel of some ISIS nutjob's AK47.

Supermanspants · 22/11/2015 19:42

Unless people regularly read the Daily Fail I can't see where this hysteria and fear spreading is taking place.

expatinscotland · 22/11/2015 19:44

YANBU

Supermanspants · 22/11/2015 19:45

Your comments are confusing Helmet. I have no idea what point you are trying to make.

Helmetbymidnight · 22/11/2015 19:48

Which point? I have made several Smile

Supermanspants · 22/11/2015 19:49

Perhaps I am tired and a bit thick

Helmetbymidnight · 22/11/2015 19:52

I guess we're all tired and fed up with the whole bloody thing- and all expressing it differently. Flowers

Supermanspants · 22/11/2015 19:57

Indeed Wine

maybebabybee · 22/11/2015 20:00

I just get quite upset when people go on about avoiding the tube and central London. I work in central London very near a main tourist attraction. DP works off Oxford St. We have to get the tube every day. Threads banging on about how people wouldn't do this or that make me feel even worse. Makes my OCD kick in massively. I hate it.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 22/11/2015 20:04

Thing is OP, the irony is, you think the terrorists are winning because people are worrying about being attacked by terrorists.

You are facilitating them 'winning' because you have started a thread in which we are all now arguing and fighting amongst ourselves.

No one wanted this situation. We are all trying to get on with our lives the best we can. And if some are more scared that others, you OP should show some empathy. Not start a thread with the aim of making people feel small, or that their worries are foolish and ridiculous. People have died. Many people have died.,It's not something which has been made up.
