To think the "but there might be a terrorist attack" doomsayers should stfu

Because they are in fact spreading terror. Hmm I've seen it on here and elsewhere loads. Christmas eve shopping, black Friday sales, concerts, tube journeys... basically, we can't do anything anymore because there might be a terrorist attack... oh no... wait.... that's not right is it?

I also don't think the preppers board is helping either

HortonWho · 22/11/2015 17:52

No Helmet I think by saying it's a risk I'm stating a well known fact, not "spreading terror" as per the OP

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 22/11/2015 17:53

What I begged everyone on MN never to go in a car again. That would genuinely reduce you chances of dying prematurely. Much more sensible than cancelling trips to London / the theatre. Oh sorry your car is convenient and you like going in it? Don't you realise it's dangerous?

KenDoddsDadsDog · 22/11/2015 17:56

I was the same , went to Sharm and flew home a few hours before the plane was bombed. I can't stop thinking that I most likely in the airport with my DD at the same time as a bomb . There was a particularly nasty thread on here about how people who went to Egypt were stupid and chavvy.

Helmetbymidnight · 22/11/2015 17:56

Ah you feel you have to tell people it's a risk because otherwise they have absolutely no idea.
Are you surrounded by idiots in rl then?

bluebolt · 22/11/2015 17:56

I was in the military during some of the the IRA and bomb scares where everyday experiences and a few real close calls, but there was not 24 hours news or social media whipping it all up.

geekymommy · 22/11/2015 18:00

Yes, some people are anxious about terrorist attacks. The odds of it actually happening make this an irrational fear. If you have an irrational fear, you either avoid the causes of the fear, or you do the thing anyway. The latter is recommended if the fear is interfering with living your life and you want to overcome it.

Helmetbymidnight · 22/11/2015 18:05

Oh I am anxious about it but that's why I loathe being around those who deliberately want to ratchet it up.

Mrsmorton · 22/11/2015 18:07

YANBU. I work as central as you can get in London walk past a very prominent politician every morning and I couldn't give a shit.

You could spend your life worrying about these things but then you wouldn't have a life. Just "keep calm and carry on".

geekymommy · 22/11/2015 18:15

Allbymyselfagain, you're very articulate for a three year old: jkirchartz.com/demos/How_Many_Apocalypses_Have_I_Survived.html

Yes! Exactly, no one's enjoying this and those saying 'ooo, no I'm going to Prague next Easter should I cancel?' are making it just as much about them as those who insist on making unnecessary journeys 'cause we can't let them win'Hmm

PourquoiTuGachesTaVie · 22/11/2015 18:17

A couple of recent examples include a discussion about which Christmas market someone should go to and a discussion about whether black Friday sales are overhyped. No one was talking about terrorism until someone popped up just to say "but it might be a target".

That's not anxiety, that's just trying to scare people.

emotionsecho · 22/11/2015 18:22

YANBU OP, there has been a chance of a terrorist attack in this country for a long time, the threat level has not been either increased or decreased for ages I thought most people knew that fact.

Speculation, hand-wringing and pointing out the bleeding obvious is ridiculous.

SummerNights1986 · 22/11/2015 18:24

I haven't said anything to anyone, really, about the threat of a terrorist attack.

But, I wouldn't take the dc to London atm. Or get on a plane with them.

Irrational that may be, but I don't care tbh. It's hardly going to hugely affect our lives but I would feel uncomfortable and unable to relax doing either of those things, especially traipsing around London doing the typical touristy-things that we tend to do when we go. I'm not an overly anxious person about such things, nor am I a pearl-clutching doomsayer. But I do feel that London is probably high on the list to be next and i'd rather stay away.

sharonthewaspandthewineywall · 22/11/2015 18:27

Id say you were more likely to be killed being trampled underfoot by a load of twits buying tins upon tins of roses/celebrations/heroes with £2 off than by a terror attack tbh.

Unreasonablebetty · 22/11/2015 18:29

The most important thing I need to ask is, where's the preppers board?

also, people will feel anxious about the terror attacks, but people shouldn't bring it up to try and spook others.

emotionsecho · 22/11/2015 18:30

Summer London has been high on the list for years.

sharonthewaspandthewineywall · 22/11/2015 18:30

Im just bitter as im not physically able to go to sales or shopping centres at the moment

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/11/2015 18:39

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/preppers Preppers Board; but don't go there if you want to complain about us. We're done with that. Wink

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 22/11/2015 18:50

I think that it's the nebulousness of the threat that makes it harder to deal with - especially if you already suffer from anxiety. From the most cynical and anxious point of view, anywhere where people congregate could be a target. The risk is minimal - but fear is not logical.

I worry about dh - he travels a lot by plane or train (one week recently, he took 6 flights and 4 train journeys) into and out of London, uses the Underground and buses, and goes to offices in the financial district - but I have to do my best to look at the statistics - the very fact that there are so many potential targets in hundreds and hundreds (maybe thousands) of towns and cities across Europe means that the actual risk is, as others have said, extremely low.

BathtimeFunkster · 22/11/2015 18:55

It's hard for me to imagine anything more U or Unpleasant than a thread full of people sneering at others who are worried about something that is genuine, and very frightening, threat.

I'm not a worrier by nature. It's just not my disposition.

But it doesn't make me morally superior to people who are prone to worrying.

Pointing out that sales might be a target is no more obvious or stupid than most of the asinine crap posted on this board.

What do you want? A fucking medal because you aren't scared? Hmm Hmm Hmm

PourquoiTuGachesTaVie · 22/11/2015 18:58

A discussion about inane stuff like Christmas shopping without someone helpfully reminding everyone that we should be scared would be nice.

OP posts:
Viviennemary · 22/11/2015 18:58

Well I certainly won't be going into any busy shopping areas in a city centre for the forseeable future. Or any nights out in city centres. But each person must do what they think fit.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 22/11/2015 19:00

Yep, Bathtime totally agree.

Live and let live I say. Oh, hold on, the OP doesn't want anyone voicing their fears. Hmm

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 22/11/2015 19:02

People should be vigilant when they are doing their Christmas shopping Op. In light of recent events. What's wrong with that?
