Surely if anyone finds this advert offensive they can choose not to watch it. I can't see the problem with showing it.

Well the qualifier should have been "in the UK".
Yes probably billions of people lack these freedoms, in part at least due to religion.

No, you mean in England and Wales.

LovelyFriend · 22/11/2015 14:36

What Scotland and NI aren't free to believe what they want to?

Thanks for the link,I've just watched the advert it was really lovely. Smile

I think it's a shame it can't be played and I wouldn't have a problem with a prayer being shown for any other religion neither.

Lovely the rules in Scotland are different, not sure about NI (it has it's own issues with religion)

We don't have faith schools, we do have Catholic schools but they are run by councils in the same way as "normal" schools are.

Basically there is an obligation to provide opportunities for religious observance on a minimum of 6 occasions per year but that parents have a right to withdraw their child and must be made aware of that right. There is no obligation for the observance to be christian.

m1nniedriver · 22/11/2015 14:58

primary schools are actually under a statutory obligation to sing about a God, or at least pray to him......... Tell me about this ban.

What would you like to know exactly? They aren't allowed to do it, it's pretty simple Hmm

Far from it. Schools are expected to worship God on a daily basis. It's the law. In E & W.

Behooven · 22/11/2015 15:05

I find mcDonalds and coca cola offensive, can they be banned too please. So many folk are too busy slurping, rustling and chewing to pay attention to the adverts anyway

Well, I am with those people who find the rest of the advertising shit offensive. All those ads promoting the idea that how you look is really important and you have to look young, and beautiful and slim, and be able to afford to buy lots of expensive shit or you are low status and worthless.
That's offensive to me, but that's allowed because it fits the dominant ideology in our society.
I'd much rather watch the prayer film, and I'd quit like to see more from other religions: it'd be more interesting than a car ad. And we have plenty of hate law crimes to stop any nastiness under the guise of religion.
I don't have to agree with something before I will wAtch it. I like different views.
I just object to ads implying I am shit because of how I look or what I can afford to buy.

slightlyglitterpaned · 22/11/2015 15:30

The CoE has churches in far more towns than the chain mentioned has cinemas.

Unfortunately the British population have voted with their feet and only a small minority attend church. Hence attempting to bully their way into a venue people actually want to attend.

ratspeaker · 22/11/2015 15:32

Its an advert for one sect of Christianity. Why should the Church of England get special treatment? The cineama chain is not showing any relgious adverts at all.

Catholics wouldn't say that prayer in that manner, Church of Scotland say it differently.
The Covenanters fought against and were often imprisoned for refusing to accept bishops and the Englsh liturgy.

As has been said Scottish schools have a different set up to England regarding religious tuition.

ratspeaker · 22/11/2015 15:34

And I am not or ever will be Christian.
If I was at home I would mute it til it passed, sam as I would an ad for any other relgion. Don't see why I should be subjected to it when I'm out to relax.

Behooven · 22/11/2015 15:34

Bully is a bit strong.

Anyway, the ban is all over the papers, the TV news and social media so the message is being spread wider that a few cinema goers.

Furiosa · 22/11/2015 15:48

Just watched it. The bit with the kids praying is creepy.

partialderivative · 22/11/2015 15:58

How about prayer calls 5 times a day from your local Mosque?

That's rather intrusive isn't it?

rogueantimatter · 22/11/2015 15:59

I'd prefer adverts for all/any religion to L'Oreal etc. Because you're worth it -noooo you're worth so much more than that.

Good on the church of England for wanting to spread their word. If they think advertising will be helpful it's a good use of their money. There's nothing in it that should be considered offensive - it doesn't claim that any other viewpoint is wrong.

spanisharmada · 22/11/2015 15:59

I think hackmum hit the nail on the head.
Adverts are adverts, people should be used to ignoring those that they don't wish to engage with by now.

Skullyton · 22/11/2015 16:17

its not the advert, its the captive audience that pisses me off.

when you have spent quite a lot of your adult life being preached at, called a devil worshipper, having people offer to pray for your soul, refusing to understand the words 'fuck off' when you tell them to stop coming and shoving their propaganda through your door... it gets fucking annoying when they decide to use your PAID FOR leisure time to do the same thing.

The cinema, where i have paid to sit, is NOT the place for religious propaganda.
