Surely if anyone finds this advert offensive they can choose not to watch it. I can't see the problem with showing it.

You won't be observing Christmas then, redstrawberry. Good for you!

I am confused as to how that follows.

JassyRadlett · 24/11/2015 12:53

You won't be observing Christmas then, redstrawberry. Good for you!

By that logic, I'm assuming you're not having a tree, giving gifts, singing songs that don't mention Jesus, or having a wreath? Good for you!

Pipbin · 24/11/2015 12:57

Or giving eggs at Easter.

Sallyingforth · 24/11/2015 12:58

I am confused as to how that follows.

You know, that Christian festival that elbowed it's (sic) way into public life and policy by closing banks and public offices

BertrandRussell · 24/11/2015 12:59

"You won't be observing Christmas then, redstrawberry. Good for you!"

Why not? I will. Presents, tree, Yule log, wreath, holly, ivy, candles, feasting and all!

FabergeEggs · 24/11/2015 13:01

What Mumsnetters fail to understand time and time again is that this site is not a microcosm of the world at large: barely anyone anywhere in RL gets as het up about Christianity, collective worship and Lord's Prayer adverts than the posters on here.

I know it suits certain individuals to believe that there views and opinions are shared by the majority (or rather the intelligentsia) but they are not.

Ego, you are particularly vitriolic and intolerant of Christianity and its values. For someone who persistently rails for tolerance and a more educated response to your own beliefs and lifestyle choices, this surprises me.

MitzyLeFrouf · 24/11/2015 13:02

Can we celebrate one of the many winter festivals that was hijacked by the Christians? Saturnalia perhaps.

redstrawberry10 · 24/11/2015 13:03

You know, that Christian festival that elbowed it's (sic) way into public life and policy by closing banks and public offices

yes, that's a great example of how it elbowed it's way into public life. Christians of course don't even realize that they uniquely have their holy days as holidays for the entire nation. But let's put a flag here so all can see.

But what does that have to do with my Christmas celebrations?

Pipbin · 24/11/2015 13:03

may be I'll stick to Yule with its feasting, Yule log, bringing in ever greens, giving gifts..........

FabergeEggs · 24/11/2015 13:03

*their

GruntledOne · 24/11/2015 13:05

Do we really have to remind the likes of Sallyingforth that the Christmas festival is nicked from pagan times?

Sallyingforth · 24/11/2015 13:07

Yes, pagans will be celebrating Yule, Saturnalia or whatever.

But atheists will not be observing Christ's mass, surely ?

Offred · 24/11/2015 13:07

No-one has framed their personal beliefs as the belief of the country on this thread... Except the Christians... Do you not see the irony there?

redstrawberry10 · 24/11/2015 13:08

barely anyone anywhere in RL gets as het up about Christianity, collective worship and Lord's Prayer adverts than the posters on here.

really? Is that really fact or just your perception? May I say that the more accurate phrasing would say barely anyone you know because most of the people I know are duly appalled by collective worship.

And if you are not, I'll assume you are happy with captive children being coaxed into your religion.

FabergeEggs · 24/11/2015 13:08

Did you all marry in a church and say your vows before God and have the service presided over by a man of the cloth? Baptise/Christen your babies?

Yep. Thought so.

MitzyLeFrouf · 24/11/2015 13:09

No.

GruntledOne · 24/11/2015 13:09

What Mumsnetters fail to understand time and time again is that this site is not a microcosm of the world at large: barely anyone anywhere in RL gets as het up about Christianity, collective worship and Lord's Prayer adverts than the posters on here.

But the reality is that it's only the C of E that is actually getting het up about Lord's Prayer adverts. I don't see any atheists here frothing at the mouth about banning them, they are simply expressing their agreement with the cinema chain's decision not to show any religious advertisements.

It's very instructive to look at the comments under the Mail's report on this. For two days running they've tried to get their more rabid readers worked up about this, and both days the majority of the comments are in favour of keeping the Lord's Prayer out of cinemas. That is probably a truer reflection of at least the views of the UK population.

FabergeEggs · 24/11/2015 13:10

Yes, Strawberry, it is fact. Outside of The Guardian and Mumsnet, yes.

Sorry about that.

Offred · 24/11/2015 13:10

No, my kids were not christened as infants and no I was not married in church... Why would I do that? You are coming off as more than a little unhinged... Hmm

And why on earth would an atheist go to mass?! Confused

GruntledOne · 24/11/2015 13:11

Did you all marry in a church and say your vows before God and have the service presided over by a man of the cloth? Baptise/Christen your babies?

Nope.

FabergeEggs · 24/11/2015 13:12

No, the frothing goes on here. The point is, the majority of atheists would happily sit through this advert at the cinema and ignore it.

JassyRadlett · 24/11/2015 13:12

You know, that Christian festival that elbowed it's (sic) way into public life and policy by closing banks and public offices

Do you mean that well-known pagan festival that was appropriated and rebranded by Christians?

FabergeEggs · 24/11/2015 13:13

I don't believe you. Sorry.

MitzyLeFrouf · 24/11/2015 13:13

Are you sticking your tongue out too Faberge?

MitzyLeFrouf · 24/11/2015 13:13

You sounds terribly infantile.
