Surely if anyone finds this advert offensive they can choose not to watch it. I can't see the problem with showing it.

WOULDN'T! WOULDN'T! that really is wouldn't.

celtictoast · 23/11/2015 13:54

The USA seems to cope very well with separating religion and State.

And yet fundamentalism and creationism are rife.

Scaredycat3000 · 23/11/2015 14:03

Mad Exactly, I'm just off to read RTFT, but I'm guessing there will be alot of ignoring the fact the cinemas were just following their own published terms and conditions based on customer surveys.

KondosSecretJunkRoom · 23/11/2015 14:05

Yeah, yeah Madhair I believe you but after that error Freudian slip do you think maybe, subconsciously even, you want to see DC belting out God Save The Queen during his morning shower before you watch your next blockbuster?

SenecaFalls · 23/11/2015 14:07

And yet fundamentalism and creationism are rife.

True, but not in the schools.

merrymouse · 23/11/2015 14:16

If the agency responsible accept this ad they have to accept ads from any religion for balance. Similarly, if they accept political advertising from any party there is no reason for them not to accept an ad from UKIP. They are just being pragmatic.

JassyRadlett · 23/11/2015 14:19

'm not pro life by any means and have been involved in many terminations through my jobI would never expect anyone to be involved in the process against their will. I can't imagine anyone would confused Perhaps I misunderstood your post.

But how is it different to, for example, a Jehovah's Witness choosing a medical career but refusing to participate in blood transfusions or advise patients on treatments involving blood transfusions?

Which I suspect would be viewed in a rather different way.

BertrandRussell · 23/11/2015 14:33

"A Winterval Rumour" is when people make up stories about things (nativity plays, Christmas lights, poppy wearing, Christmas cards, Christmas carols......) being banned because one group or another would be offended. Lots of them about. All utter bullshit.

Pedestriana · 23/11/2015 14:44

Christianity is one of the major religions in the UK. But there are a significant number of Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs and Jews. Why only show the Lords Prayer? All the major religions have prayers which broadly express the same sentiments. I'd find it odd to 'target' one particular religion over the others.

Also, I find it hugely distasteful that the Church of England wish to invest this much money into advertising when they could be using to actually do something constructive like assist the homeless, feed the hungry, provide water to people who have little sanitation/drinking water....

Incidentally, my feeling would be the same about this if any other religion/religious body wished to do this.

Kondos Grin

The c of e do an awful lot of feeding the hungry, helping the vulnerable etc, as seen through thousands of local community projects, food banks etc. I guess you could say most charities advertise, some a whole load more than others, and yet still do what they are in place to do. Saying that, I think this was misguided, but still see a heck of a lot of good the church does across the country at grass roots level.

Entirely typical of Cameron to jump onto what he perceives is a populist bandwaggon that enables him to pose as the saviour of Christmas, family values and all the rest of it. The man's cynical exploitation of this sort of news story is utterly disgusting.

Offred · 23/11/2015 15:39

I have no sympathy at all for nurses who refuse to offer care to patients because of their religious beliefs. I have great sympathy for the other staff who have to take on an extra burden of work as a result, the NHS which has to find the extra work potentially and the patients who should be getting the care they are entitled to. If your religious beliefs prohibit you from providing care as required then choose a different job.

madhairday · 23/11/2015 15:40

Agree completely, GruntledOne

Lostcat2 · 23/11/2015 15:44

Good for the cinemas.

MitzyLeFrouf · 23/11/2015 15:45

The stupidity of them threatening legal action. That's one way to really piss people off. Stop trying to foist your ad on people CofE!

MitzyLeFrouf · 23/11/2015 15:47

The Archbishop of Canterbury gives good sad face doesn't he?

The Cinemas haven't said that they have banned this advert, they have simply turned it down, it doesn't meet the policies that most Cinemas have for advertising, They will have also turned down others adverts, as they always do.

They will have been approached by many companies for advertising, as with all big film releases.

I am a Christian and hope that the Church of England continue to use this advert and try other Cinemas/venues/TV channels for this advert, I really hope that the Church of England didn't make this film with the sole aim of using it in Cinemas, rather foolish to not check first!

BertrandRussell · 23/11/2015 15:57

I hate it when Christians in the UK cry persecution. I thought better of Justin. I have him as a Christmas tree decoration- he might be staying in the box this year.......

Fatherwishmas · 23/11/2015 15:58

Its a nice bit of film

originalmavis · 23/11/2015 16:01

I'd rather join in a rousing rendition of onward Christian soldiers or Jerusalem. I love a good signalong but you just don't get the chance all that much...

Freezingwinter · 23/11/2015 16:02

I wonder if the people offended by the Lord's Prayer are also offended by Christmas?? Because they're part of the same religion aren't they? Are Christmas lights offensive now? Nativity scenes?

MitzyLeFrouf · 23/11/2015 16:03

O Holy Night or Ding Dong Merrily on High for me.
