Naked woman in sauna

This just happened, local leisure center a young woman walked into the sauna naked. Someone else immediatly said to her "you can't be in here like that love, its not allowed". She replied I'm German, this is sauna, does this offend you?. The other woman said no, but it is the rules. The naked woman then went on about how she always does it, sauna doesn't work unless your naked and everywhere else in Europe does this.

Some young men opened the sauna door, and closed it immediately when they saw her. She laughed and said back " its OK you can come in". She clearly heard people telling her it wasn't allowed and was enjoying the attention she got.

I kind of see her point about prefering to be naked, but there are rules in place and she was obviously making other people uncomfortable.

Was I bu to tell reception on the way out?

it wouldnt have bothered me, even if it was in the rules, I doubt id have said anything as its a stupid rule

The funniest thing I ever experienced in Germany was in Cologne where there is a fantastic spa complex next to the Rhine. In certain sections of it you wear a swim suit and kids can go in. Other parts are for people au naturel. Oh my goodness you don't know where to look. Men's bits swinging around. Women's bits swinging around come to that. Sorry, tmi.

The funny thing is that there is a CABLE CAR that goes across the nudist bit! Yes really! What came first? The cable car and then they built a nudist spa underneath it - or vice versa?

To come back to the OP - the lady was unreasonable because the rules are different in the UK. No doubt she'd be the first to complain about arrogant Brits ignoring rules in Germany.

DH is German and he has had to learn this rule, he has also had to explain it to German friends and family who find it a bit baffling.
Once when we were in Germany we actually got told off for NOT being naked in sauna!!
There is nothing salacious about Nudity in many countries, when we go to Germany there is none of this awkward changing under a towel etc and most shower gel adverts happily show nipples. It's not that they flaunt their nudity it's just that they don't go to extreme lengths to cover it up like we do.
Having said that, anyone going to a foreign country needs to observe to rules and to a certain extent the cultural norms.

YANBU. She was breaking rules. Arrogant.

BUt but but, to all those naysayers that hate saunas, there is evidence that they reduce rates of cardiac disease and (IIRC) other diseases. I could pull out the paper if I wasn't lazy

Don't diss the sauna

mileend2bermondsey · 20/11/2015 10:48

YWBU if it bothered you that much you should have said something to her face, not secretly grassed her up.

Halfapintofgenius · 20/11/2015 10:51

Germans are more comfortable with nudity. Lots of people swimming naked in lakes, saunas definitely naked, equally showing your bits in gym or pool changing rooms is quite normal.

On the other hand, German women dress more modestly, they don't show as much leg and cleavage, especially on nights out, compared to British women. it's quite fascinating.

MsMargaretHale · 20/11/2015 11:01

I live in Europe and everyone is naked in the sauna - men, women, kids. No-one bats an eyelid. You can cover up with a towel if you find it a bit much.
What I find really disgusting is Brits who sit on the bench in the sauna in their swimwear and without a towel and sweat directly on to the wood where others subsequently sit.
But the German women was completely wrong. If she wants to get naked in UK she needs to do it in a "traditional" sauna, not down the local leisure centre.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 20/11/2015 11:03

Do naked sauna people sit on a towel? Otherwise I think it's a bit ick.

This is exactly what I was thinking.
Naked punani all over the wooden seating area - fuck that!

MsMargaretHale · 20/11/2015 11:08

Naked people always, always, always sit on their cotton towel.

MsMargaretHale · 20/11/2015 11:09

Brits in swinsuits should do the same - otherwise as you say it is disgusting.

SirChenjin · 20/11/2015 11:13

Doesn't matter what is done in Germany - she's in the UK.

There are 'strange' customs all over Europe, but if you've got any common sense you either keep away or you go with the flow. If she wants to be naked then she's at the wrong sauna.

MistressoftheYoniverse · 20/11/2015 11:24

@ hellsbells

Wheretheresawill1 · 20/11/2015 11:26

Not so much about nudity for me but bodily functions which I assume carry on whilst you are in a sauna!! Don't fancy sitting on a bench with any secretions!!!

MistressoftheYoniverse · 20/11/2015 11:28

I don't even like looking at my own hanging bit more-less someone else's I get an immediate fight or flight response at the sight of an old mans hanging ball sacks...

MistressoftheYoniverse · 20/11/2015 11:29

I wonder...do they let off in there? and if so is the smell intensified by the heat?? what is the parp protocol?

SoupDragon · 20/11/2015 11:33

On the other hand, since it is a convention in the UK to indulge in such disgusting practices...

Whilst you may not agree with UK convention, there's no need to be quite so rude.

Roomba · 20/11/2015 12:13

I was rather surprised by all the nakedness at the swimming baths in Germany. The showers were right next to the pool, the kind where they are all in a ling line, and everyone - man woman and child - just stripped off to shower after swimming. I was really stared at because I still had my costume on! I could understand if it was a shower in a single sex changing room, but this was for everyone, and not only in full view of the pool but also the main road outside through the big glass windows!

HaydeeofMonteCristo · 20/11/2015 12:23

She was being u because those were the rules of the sauna she was in. Doesn't matter what the rules are in Germany or if she is objectively right. I believe the German/ Scandinavian way is healthier but that doesn't matter.

Also agree naked people should be on towels though!

motherinferior · 20/11/2015 12:48

There are some really weird takes on the human body here. Traumatised by the sight of a man bending over? Not knowing where to look because of 'swinging bits'? Flapping? Dangling?

Whether or not you go naked is up to you, obviously, but these are just normal bodies. It's what we look like.

Sallyingforth · 20/11/2015 13:00

Exactly.

violetsarentblue · 20/11/2015 13:31

I get an immediate fight or flight response at the sight of an old mans hanging ball sacks...

Failing to see how others find the idea of sitting in a hot, enclosed space with that kind of sight even remotely relaxing.

SirChenjin · 20/11/2015 13:39

I'm not sure I would get an immediate fight or flight reaction - but I can stretch my imagination sufficiently to understand and acknowledge how people from cultures that aren't open about nudity could do, irrespective of what naked bodies look like.
