Naked woman in sauna

This just happened, local leisure center a young woman walked into the sauna naked. Someone else immediatly said to her "you can't be in here like that love, its not allowed". She replied I'm German, this is sauna, does this offend you?. The other woman said no, but it is the rules. The naked woman then went on about how she always does it, sauna doesn't work unless your naked and everywhere else in Europe does this.

Some young men opened the sauna door, and closed it immediately when they saw her. She laughed and said back " its OK you can come in". She clearly heard people telling her it wasn't allowed and was enjoying the attention she got.

I kind of see her point about prefering to be naked, but there are rules in place and she was obviously making other people uncomfortable.

Was I bu to tell reception on the way out?

If this thread was started by a German in a German sauna and a Brit walked in in clothes it would be exactly the same!

Justaboy · 19/11/2015 22:38

England expects! thou shalt not show off thy naught bits and butts in public!

KatharinaRosalie · 19/11/2015 22:38

Barbara our office parties often included going to sauna. So you wouldn't accidentally bump into your boss, you would simply go to sauna with them. Naked.

Sallyingforth · 19/11/2015 22:40

If you are not allowed to be naked, then it simply isn't a sauna.

The whole idea of a sauna is for the pores of the skin - all of the skin - to be opened.

reni2 · 19/11/2015 22:59

But surely if nudity isn't allowed she's exposing herself to people who have not consented to this like some perv?

ottothedog · 19/11/2015 23:00

Totally unacceptable and she knew it full well.
At our gym, nudity is fine in the single sex saunas (but please - towels!) but not the mixed sex saunas. You'd probably get banned if you kept insisting on using them naked

UncertainSmile · 19/11/2015 23:01

I need to know where this sauna is

orchidnap · 19/11/2015 23:22

Between the ecover stew and the offensive naked sauna lady, youre not having a brilliant couple of days OP!

Babycham1979 · 19/11/2015 23:24

It's funny to see such tolerant and benign responses to this when in another thread, a man had the audacity to shower (yes, SHOWER) naked at a gym, and the general census seemed to be that he should be strung-up as a sex offender.

Not only does it make me wonder what Anglos are so weird about sex, but why so weird about male sexuality? Most other developed countries get by without this degree of prurient suspicion and paranoia.

WorraLiberty · 19/11/2015 23:35

I have no problem with nudity.

But I have to agree with this.... She was BU and arrogant to think the rules don't apply to her because it's done differently in Germany.

She's not in Germany and if the rules say no nudity, then she needs to stick to them the same as everyone else.

grisclair · 20/11/2015 00:05

I'm German and feel really uncomfortable in German / continental saunas, especially on mixed days. Statements like "people don't care what you look like, nothing sexual about it" are to be taken with a grain of salt in my experience. Friends and I have definitely experienced especially older men staring. I also happen to know a group of men (most of them lawyers and judges) who go to the sauna together once a fortnight and have actually admitted that they don't go just for the relaxation aspect of it. All very off-putting. Certainly no more mixed public saunas for me, thanks.

Re the woman at OP's sauna: agree with previous posters, when in Rome and all of that. Very rude and arrogant.

Krampus · 20/11/2015 08:12

She was being unreasonable, the rules were on display and she decided they didn't apply to her. What people in Sweden do has no relevance. If you go into a sauna knowing it's mixed sex and people will be naked you have agreed to that by entering. If you know its mixed sex and nudity is banned then that is what you are expecting.

I have never been into a communal mixed sex changing room in Spain Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, Holland .. and seen anyone strip off naked.

FindoGask · 20/11/2015 08:18

BoffinMum I would love a sauna in my garden. When I get my own house I am going to build one.

That's interesting. I've never really bought into the whole ''Germans like to let it hang out all the time'' stereotype.
I think it's naive to think that in a mixed sauna, that none of the men will stare at the women (especially the younger women) and keep their looks at eye leve.
I see this happening in the jacuzzi at my gym all the time - groups of men who stare and pass comment to eachother,on all the (mainly young) females who enter and get out of the jacuzzi - and that's when they have clothes ON! Shock
God knows what these pervs would be like in a naked sauna.

This is why I wouldn't be happy for my teenage daughter to go in a mixed sauna.
Yes, most will be there for the right reasons, but some won't be.

bruffin · 20/11/2015 08:31

I thought the objection to swimsuits abroad was that they are not made of natural material therefore exudes some sort toxins into the air in the sauna because of the heat. I dont find really find wearing a swimsuit in a sauna uncomfortable

I have been to Finland and had nude saunsas (private ones just used by the company i worked for) and we were given white paper mats to sit on.

DeoGratias · 20/11/2015 08:51

We often have saunas abroad where people are naked. I don't mind nudity at all but in general wherever you are on the planet it tends to be wise to go with local rules if you want to avoid trouble.

rubymallorywhite · 20/11/2015 09:02

Ample Flappage......
That just made my day,
What a glorious description!

WendyTorrance · 20/11/2015 09:33

ruby it would make a great user name!

BoffinMum · 20/11/2015 09:47

If anyone knows of a sauna with buff guys in there, let me know and I will park my ample flappage in the vicinity. Grin

spidey66 · 20/11/2015 09:48

In my gym, the saunas are in the changing rooms so this doesn't come up as it's OK to be naked. I'm quite shy about nakedness but acknowledge it's appropriate in a sauna. However if the rules say clothes should be on, rules are rules.

motherinferior · 20/11/2015 09:53

Shift up, Boff, I'll join you.

I sneaked a bit of sauna nakedness on a press trip recently - I was alone and only realised afterwards that there were prim unhygienic notices insisting on swimsuits. Fabulous, it was.

etttvatre · 20/11/2015 10:04

YANBU as there were rules stating you have to wear a costume.

I do however think it's utterly ridiculous to not let people be naked in a sauna, that's how it's meant to be done!!!

SarahSavesTheDay · 20/11/2015 10:12

You're really supposed to be naked in a sauna. There's no other way.

It depends what the age limit is on the sauna in my opinion. If say a 12 years old can use it then it's very inappropriate and should be reported. The main problem is that not everyone is comfortable with nudity and the rules are that it is not allowed so someone will have paid to use the facilities that they feel comfortable in. Nudity would mean they may not use the facilities but that would not be their fault. They probably paid to use somewhere specificially because it had no nudity.
