To think no one cares who the song 'You're so vain' was written about?

Honestly I think I may be a bit unreasonable but It's not a mystery everyone is dying to find out or are they??
The way it's wrote about in the media it's the greatest unsolved mystery we must find out.
One guy paid a load of money to find out who Carly Simon wrote the song about but was sworn to secrecy and now he must be incredibly pissed off as Carly Simon has said one verse of the song is about Warren Beattie after previously swearing she would never say.
But now apparently has 'let slip' the song is about 3 men and not just 1.
I think she is making up the 3 men now to cause more 'mystery'.
Does anyone care who the song is about?

I think she sounds bored and totally over whoever it is, or the several someones. It drips with disdain.

Flowers OP. Post what the fuck you want, where you want.

Floisme · 20/11/2015 17:44

Oh.
I only came on to say I love the 'Mockingbird' duet she did with James Taylor.
And 'You belong to me'.
I didn't realise I was walking into a war zone.

IrisVillarca · 20/11/2015 17:51

It seems to be back in track now, Flo.

I know what you mean, Op btw. It came on the radio yesterday and I thought wtf? This is supposed to be news?

SilverBirchWithout · 20/11/2015 18:04

Flowers I am sorry OP if any comments I made contributed to your upset. I am often quite direct in what I say, and did feel this sounded quite like a fairly robust AIBU. A lesson learned.

It is quite amazing how many of us are still a bit interested in this song, maybe the demographic on this thread is not necessarily representative; I supect only those of us still a bit intrigued would open the thread.

SilverBirchWithout · 20/11/2015 18:06

Can anyone remember the Peter Sarstedt song 'Where do you go to my lovely?' Was that about a real person?

Floisme · 20/11/2015 18:17

'Ah you talk like Marlene Dietrich.'

I've a feeling it was, Silver but I can't remember.
Off to google.

Preminstreltension · 20/11/2015 21:16

I love that "My Lovely" song. Esp the "Ha-ha ha-ha" bit and the idea of someone being called Zizi Jeanmaire.

OurBlanche · 21/11/2015 13:58

It wasn't about anyone specifically, but Sophia Loren's childhood and subsequent career might have given Sarsted an idea. He says not and there is also the story of him falling in love with a girl who died in a fire, which he has admitted having made up, just to have a story to tell.

It isn't about anyone, maybe his girlfriend at the time, maybe not.

Can you tell a) I am not a youngy'un and b) I read a lot of music magazines?Smile

insameboattoo · 21/11/2015 14:45

yes off the top of my head definitely that Sophia Loren connection but probably about anyone or no one ITMS. great song.

Dowser · 21/11/2015 14:46

Definitely warren Beatty .

He was devastatingly handsome in his heyday. Think bonnie and Clyde !

( I have no insider knowledge . I have in my own mind, decided! Mick jagger ! No way. Paul macartney ! Definitely not. Cute but sex symbol. No. It's Warren...I don't even need to phone a friend!)

SilverBirchWithout · 21/11/2015 14:47

Thanks Blanche

absolutelynotfabulous · 21/11/2015 14:49

No, definitely James Taylor. Bloody devastating. And a decent singer-songwriter to boot.

insameboattoo · 21/11/2015 15:00

thanks ab defintely JT. Exactly what I said upthread. She was married to him

laffymeal · 21/11/2015 15:03

So to answer the OP "no one cares who it was written about", it would appear that some people do.

Floisme · 21/11/2015 15:04

I don't think the dates are right for James Taylor. They were still crazy about each other at that time.

I know this for a fact as I remember reading it in Fab 208 Grin

laffymeal · 21/11/2015 15:05

Lol, "Fab 208", loved that magazine. I never actually owned my own copy. It was too glossy and expensive. I got them about 4 weeks later from my cousins.

Floisme · 21/11/2015 15:15

I used to read it in the newsagents, till they threw me out.

PurpleThermalsNowItsWinter · 21/11/2015 15:16

It came out before my time but reminds me of so many people. I think she had time travelled into the future, watched MIC, TOWIE, seen a lot of the worthless celebs around today and went back in time to write the song.

Floisme · 21/11/2015 15:24

I always thought 'You Belong to Me' was about James Taylor but that was a few years down the line.
