To think no one cares who the song 'You're so vain' was written about?

Honestly I think I may be a bit unreasonable but It's not a mystery everyone is dying to find out or are they??
The way it's wrote about in the media it's the greatest unsolved mystery we must find out.
One guy paid a load of money to find out who Carly Simon wrote the song about but was sworn to secrecy and now he must be incredibly pissed off as Carly Simon has said one verse of the song is about Warren Beattie after previously swearing she would never say.
But now apparently has 'let slip' the song is about 3 men and not just 1.
I think she is making up the 3 men now to cause more 'mystery'.
Does anyone care who the song is about?

oooh didn't realise Mick sang on it.

Fantasyland · 19/11/2015 18:41

Sparkling its on the news today that she has said one of the verses is about Warren Beatty.

Mick jagger does sing on this song too. No idea who its about though. Agree about Apricot! I do like it though. Great intro.

So it is. Still don't care. Grin

She's about to release an autobiography. Hmm

reni2 · 19/11/2015 18:46

Maybe they did once, but since this song is celebrating it's 43rd birthday this month it might be irrelevant now.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 19/11/2015 18:50

What I don't understand is why they're pretending this is news. I'm pretty sure I read an interview with Carly Simon earlier this year might have been last year it's hard to keep track when she said it was about 3 people and 1 of them was Warren Beatty.

Ooh, or maybe I didn't read it. Maybe I had a premonition that the BBC were going to cover it in Nov Shock

notafanofwinter · 19/11/2015 18:53

Isn't it like one of those unsolved mysteries?
What happened to Lord Lucan?
Who was Jack the Ripper?
Who did Carly Simon write about?

I think we like not knowing.

BertieBotts · 19/11/2015 18:54

I've always thought that the point of it was that it could be about many people, and at its essence, it's about narcissism.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 19/11/2015 18:59

Is it narcissistic of Carly Simon to think that we care? Grin although I am vaguely interested

laffymeal · 19/11/2015 19:01

It suited my brother too Maryz

MyNewBearTotoro · 19/11/2015 19:03

It never occurred to me it was actually about anyone specific.

I assumed most songs are just written to rhyme and be catchy etc, not to actually mirror the artist's real life.

wowfudge · 19/11/2015 19:04

It's a great song - and fab to sing along to.

I love knowing songs have been written about or who/what is the inspiration behind a song or why a singer has chosen to sing a particular song it makes it more personal to me

and I envy Yoko Ono, Pattie Boyd and Jane Asher who had lovely songs written about them

Its no surprise it is partly about Warren Beatty its a great song she is a great songwriter

insameboattoo · 19/11/2015 21:21

I always thought it was about James Taylor

SkyWasMadeOfAmethyst · 19/11/2015 21:21

David Bowie is another one they think is a verse and Kris Kristofferson too... I care. How good was it when Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughy sang it in How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days?! Need to watch that again...

Hassled · 19/11/2015 21:25

I do care. I don't know why I care, but I do.

And yes to Pattie Boyd - what must it be like to have had both "Something" and "Wonderful Tonight" written about you? And Layla as well, I think.

Mrsbennington · 19/11/2015 21:43

thought it was well known it was Warren Beatty?

NewLife4Me · 19/11/2015 21:47

I'd heard warren Beatty, but this was many years ago.
I like the song but don't think it's worth a thread to find out who's bothered.
Confused

NewLife4Me · 19/11/2015 21:50

Just after it went stale with Yoko though, JL sent him out to find another inspiration because he couldn't write an album without an on the side shag.
Not being bitchy I heard it on an interview she did.

NewLife4Me · 19/11/2015 21:50

sorry, sent her out, not him. That doesn't make sense.

Noofly · 19/11/2015 22:09

I thought it was supposed to be about Warren Beatty or possibly James Taylor. I think a fair number of people are still vaguely curious about it.

BiscuitMillionaire · 19/11/2015 22:13

I always find the chorus slightly irritating. 'You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you'... but it IS about him!
Or them.
Possibly

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 19/11/2015 22:14

yes all three songs are written about Patti. Something is my favourite song it is so beautiful

Yoko Ono had Woman, Starting Over, Jane Asher Here, There and Everywhere, For No One, And I love her

how wonderful to have a beautiful song written about you
