Just that really. If people have strong feelings on the matter then they are free to opt out, I really fail to see the issue with it.

This guy 'believes' it won't make a difference, that's different to your statement Hmm Seems pointless while relatives can still over ride it but time will tell. Fingers crossed it will make a difference and lives will be saved, surely that us the most important thing here.

We'll have to agree to disagree. Saving lives is not what the original question was. It is about whether we should have an opt-out system. I think patient autonomy is important. The state making decisions on behalf of a patient is inherently wrong. The argument that has come about is whether opt-out will save lives. I do not believe that it will.

I personally think patient autonomy is more important than saving lives.

But that is a hypothetical statement, as we do not know whether opt-out will save lives. It will be very interesting to see what happens in Wales.

M1nniedriver · 02/12/2015 09:44

*Opt out makes no difference.

Saving lives is not what the original question was*

Yes that is exactly what the question was about. Organ donation = saving lives. opt out will hopefully increase organ donation therefore save lives. You can't seoerate the 2. One is the consequences of the other Hmm

But opt out may not save lives. It may even have the reverse effect. Either way, people's autonomy should not be overridden. Like I said, it will be interesting to see what happens in Wales. Even if it does increase the number of available organs, they will go to those in most clinical need. Which is unlikely to be those in Wales.

The Welsh are part of a research experiment.

M1nniedriver · 02/12/2015 11:46

may not save lives

surely worth a shot. Thankfully enough people think it is Smile

But enough think it isn't to prevent it being forced through elsewhere. I would be very surprised if any healthcare staff actually enforced the new law in Wales.

M1nniedriver · 02/12/2015 12:58

its all just guess work at the moment, will just have to see how it pans out.

When you say healthcare staff won't inforce it, what exactly do you mean? Confused enforce it against whom?

OP posts:
Pseudonym99 · 02/12/2015 14:09

Enforced against relatives who say no. And if they don't enforce it, what is the point of the new law?

wannaBe · 02/12/2015 14:19

not able to link atm as on phone, but 86000 people have already opted out. That's a pretty strong statement so early on IMO.

MaidOfStars · 02/12/2015 14:30

How many people on the register?

Pseudonym99 · 02/12/2015 15:33

86,000 is about 8% of the population, apparently.

M1nniedriver · 02/12/2015 16:19

As ive said throughout the thread it is pointkess while relatives can overrule the patients wishes Confused

OP posts:
wannaBe · 02/12/2015 16:23

8% of the population opting out in the first day is a massive amount and should not be downplayed.

M1nniedriver · 02/12/2015 16:27

Time will tell, I'd susoect there will be a lot more staying on the register than opting out.

After I'm dead, I'm in no position to claim ownership of anything.

I 100% agree donation should be opt out.

M1nniedriver · 02/12/2015 16:29

I should say I have no issue with people opting out, that's their right to do it for whatever reason they like.

Seriously!? This is completely unlawful in my view, my organs are not the property of the government... This will be the case if opt out is approved.
I can see organ donation can be important, but why are you deciding for me... persuade me don't force me!!

worita · 24/02/2018 09:15

How the hell did you find this ancient thread @RukshanaR Confused

RukshanaR · 24/02/2018 12:30

Lol!
I was searching to see of they had changed the policy to opt out for organ donars and this came up.... I see this has been an issue for a long time

Snowysky20009 · 24/02/2018 12:36

Why do we have a zombie thread again? Ffs it's 3 years old!! Agghhh

Skarossinkplunger · 24/02/2018 12:55

YANBU. I’ve tried to understand the reasons that people have for not wanting to donate their organs but I can’t help feeling they are just intrinsically selfish.

I think it should be opt out, and anyone who does opt out shouldn’t be allowed to receive an organ should they need it.

Skarossinkplunger · 24/02/2018 12:56

Shit. ZOMBIE!!

RukshanaR · 25/02/2018 23:47

Now that truly is selfish!

I'm far from selfish, but it's wrong to not allow people to have a say in what happens to their own bodies.

We don't give presents only if we receive them first
