To find neighbour's request entitled and rude

I moved into a council property a couple of months ago (maisonette, house turned into two flats). My upstair's neighbours own a taxi rank so take up all the available parking spaces directly outside the flat with 5 people carrier type taxis and 1 estate one, which means we have to park on the other side of the culdesac which has a massive grassy island in the middle of it. We struggled like hell to move our stuff in. I'm 32 weeks pregnant and have bad SPD so struggle walking far distances at the best of times, and I would love to be able to park outside my own home anyway.

One day there was a space infront of our flat because one of the taxis were being used and we had some more boxes to move in so it was ideal. I didn't think this would be a problem but the next morning we got a knock on our door. It was the upstairs neighour, he asked my OH to move his car so he could park his taxi outside. OH not wanting to get off on bad terms with new neighbours he moved his car. Now I am thinking what the hell. They can't tell us where we can and cannot park our car, especially when we're going to be lugging a child/travel system/loads of shopping out of it. I imagine he likes to park them there for security reasons but it's still really rude and inconsiderate of the other residents. The parking spaces aren't assigned to certain flats/houses but taking up all 6 spaces? Now that's just taking the piss. Please tell me i'm not BU.

Why on earth does he need so many cars? He can't drive them all at once and it doesn't sound like business is booming for him to hire staff

Justaboy · 18/11/2015 22:18

frillybiscuits Any proper cab outfit should be registered and licensed by the council, that's to stop any bunch of cowboys taking the the streets.

Also IIRC their cars should be subject to council testing to make sure there're fit for the purpose.

Bet the revenue would like to know too;!

steppemum · 18/11/2015 22:26

OOh a result OP! Please come back and tell us what happens when the council comes round.

I absolutely love the idea of phoning up and ordering a taxi from the station and then parking in their space.

SirChenjin · 19/11/2015 06:40

Excellent news OP! And love that idea of phoning from the station Grin

Now - a wee phone call to HMRC...?

FishWithABicycle · 19/11/2015 06:57

Good result OP keep us posted...

ShortcutButton · 19/11/2015 07:08

Whilst I feel for you OP, I really hope the mans business is not^ shut down! and a solution can be found for him

thecatsarecrazy · 19/11/2015 08:36

If he shouldn't be running it I absolutely hope he gets shut down.

pictish · 19/11/2015 08:37

He'll just have to find somewhere else to park his fleet rather than expecting to own the whole fucking street won't he? Selfish, cheeky bastard. Fuck off pal and take your bloody taxis with you.

steppemum · 19/11/2015 09:15

Shortcut - he doesn't need to be shut down, he does need to registered, insured, legal and paying his taxes.
While we have no proof that he isn't doing any of those things, the fact that he isn't registered with the council suggests that all is not in order.

Running a business from home is not always legal.

If you were crashed into by one of his taxis, you would want it to be legally registered and insured wouldn't you?

trufflehunterthebadger · 19/11/2015 09:19

Shortcut dont you realise the implications of him being unlicenced?
No CRBs on drivers
no insurance
possibly unroadworthy cars
not paying tax

reni2 anyone can apply for social housing and go on the waiting list.

It may be different in areas of exceptional demand (London for example), but 'need' is based purely on housing need - not financial need. We live in a HA property (there are no council houses here - all HA), and we were not asked for any manner of proof of income. They asked if we were working, but only to note down whether rent would be paid by us or by HB (this was back when HB was usually paid directly).

So many people really don't seem to understand or want to understand that social housing is not income related and is most definitely NOT free! Our rent increases every April & is only very marginally lower than market rate for private lets in the area. The only benefit (and I'm not underestimating how big a benefit it is) is the security of the tenancy as opposed to a private landlord who might want to sell at any point.

I accept rental differences between social housing & private lets will be much more noticeable in London, the SE & other very expensive areas. London & the SE are not most of the UK though, which is why these blanket assumptions are so bloody annoying.

What a stupid man and a bald faced liar. He is the author of his own downfall.

Aeroflotgirl · 19/11/2015 12:56

Don't ever move your car, good on you op.

Justaboy · 24/11/2015 12:25

Did the OP find out from the council if he was allowed to be running a cab from from there or not?

MammaTJ · 24/11/2015 13:30

Oh good for you OP. Please don't forget to come back when the council have investigated.

Ooh, my favourite sort of thread :) Please keep us updated OP Grin

gasman · 25/11/2015 11:16

I had a downstairs neighbour (in a private development not that it really matters) who ran a business from home contrary to the leasehold agreement and his mortgage t&c's.

It was noisy and generated a parking problem.

I lived with it for 3 years despite asking the freeholders repeatedly to enforce the lease. He was eventually repossessed for non payment of his mortgage.

During the three years my car was mysteriously vandalised a number of times, my bike was stolen and various other low level irritants. I strongly suspect him.

So yes pursue it but watch your possessions....

TheAussieProject · 28/11/2015 02:14

Any update, OP?

exWifebeginsat40 · 28/11/2015 02:56

i love how the annoying neighbour who causes parking issues is escalated to Pablo Escobar in just four short pages. never change, mumsnet.
