It's giving me the rage to see this on fb and Twitter I totally disagree, wtf have I got friends who think this is ok? Grrrr

OP posts:
MsMargaretHale · 17/11/2015 11:08

UK opted out of the immigration aspects of Schengen so "closing our borders" presumably means stopping anyone entering or leaving UK. Mmmm.
Quite scary to think that these people are going to have a vote on the EU referendum.

UnlikelyPilgramage · 17/11/2015 11:09

Is that surprising, Elen?

I understand it's unpleasant to see, but it's also common sense to be thorough with those who are clearly followers of the religion that have been responsible for terrorist attacks, albeit an extremist version.

I am Christian, I wear a cross but they are not that thorough with me despite the fact that some people have committed terrorist acts in the name of Christianity. That means it is not common sense it is prejudice.

Quiero · 17/11/2015 11:14

I suggested we closed the border with Scotland which was where the fuckwit lived who posted this nonsense on FB.

These would be the first people whinging if their holidays to Tenerife got cancelled.

PurpleDaisies · 17/11/2015 11:17

So all Muslims should be treated as potential terrorists then? Wow. The ignorable of your post is astounding. And practically, if we're wanting to stop young peaceful Muslims from becoming radicalised treating them as the enemy isn't going to hell one bit.

LaContessaDiPlump · 17/11/2015 11:18

I've seen a 15 year-old boy pulled to one side and questioned by two men bigger than him when passing through Milan airport in the past. He had accompanied his sisters from Dubai - we were on the same flight. He had spent most of the flight playing on his DSlite and looked scared to death at the reception he got at Milan.

There is a difference between assessing people and intimidating them. Looking sternly at someone will probably not cow a terrorist but it will make a hell of a lot of non-extremist Muslims feel unwelcome, unwanted and more likely to gravitate towards people who probably won't glare at them (i.e. other Muslim communities).

coffeetasteslikeshit · 17/11/2015 11:19

I agree Saskia, it's not a left or right issue. It's a lack-of-thought issue, the people sharing these things clearly haven't thought it through.

Ilikedmyoldusernamebetter · 17/11/2015 11:27

Unlikely Anders Breivik who single handedly gunned down 77 people in Norway 4 years ago was a Right Wing Christian Extremist terrorist...

What happened in Paris was unbelievably horrific, but the majority of terrorist attacks in Europe are committed by non Muslims, in fact separatist groups carry out tens of attacks a year within Europe which sometimes barely make headlines ...

Elendon · 17/11/2015 11:29

Unlikely, I'm from Northern Ireland. So understand that being from a country where terrorism took place, I was/possibly still am, a likely target of passport control. Still, I feel, that an obvious family coming home from a holiday abroad, and being held up by their appearance only (!), was something that I was angry about.

UnlikelyPilgramage · 17/11/2015 11:37

It goes without saying that most Muslims would not dream of committing terrorist crimes; however, ISIS is an issue (understatement) and given that people who are Muslim are often recognisable through traditional dress, extra attention will be given to them, in the same way that local shops ban more than two schoolchildren at a time.

Elendon · 17/11/2015 11:46

This was British passport control. Not foreign passport control.

f1fan2015 · 17/11/2015 11:57

One of my old work colleagues just posted a picture of the twin towers saying it is offensive to certain groups, going off past posts I really should delete him but there was also the Statue of Liberty in the photograph so posted this in reply

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

MrWriter · 17/11/2015 12:04

Elendon, I was just about to say that as A Norn Irish citizen I have been treated differently than the rest of the uk population when passing through ppc.

Often due to our accents the airport security single us out for the thorough searches of bags and luggage.

Tbh I can see why, and I'm sure any normal non extremist Muslim can appreciate why.

LaContessaDiPlump · 17/11/2015 12:15

I'm sure you can see why MrWriter, but it's hard not to take it personally when you are routinely, 'reasonably', treated with suspicion and fear. At least you can pass undetected until you open your mouth (or hand over your passport) - most Muslims don't have that luxury.

Elendon · 17/11/2015 12:15

Norn Iron citizen, I'm sure you meant to say. ;-)

Look, I don't speak when going through British PPC, plus, if I do, I speak with a BBC accent, having had elocution lessons as a youngster. I've also lived longer in England. However, I do acknowledge, that the accent you learn from birth, is the one you keep and slip easily back into when you go back to visit

But this particular time was extreme. I wasn't alone in figuring out the family were being picked on, simply because of their appearance. This was three years ago btw and I was travelling back from Stockholm to Stanstead at the time.

Of course I'm from Norn Iron!

I was just stating that normal reasonable folk accept that there are reasons that they are being more heavily searched. Norn Irish people due to the IRA and general lack of understanding, Muslims due to the current threat and lack of understanding.

Also when I was travelling through a Spanish airport dh and I got chatting to a Venezuelan, he was really nice and chatty then all of a sudden the Spanish guards trailed him off for extra security checks. We met up with him later and he said he was used to it as the Spanish are wary of the Venezuelans, he had no issues and as far as I know hadn't joined a terrorist organisation! Its a fact of life, it probably shouldn't be but it is prejustices exist and cannot be used as an excuse for extremist behaviour!

At no stage, throughout the million baggage checks and extra security checks due to being NI (I travel a lot for work), did I think. Feck this I'm going to join the RA and give them something to find!!!

Hotpatootietimewarp · 17/11/2015 12:24

Ok I would like a coupl of answers. I totally understand these people need help.

  1. Refugees are arriving in Dumfries and Galloway today, what I want to know is, is this really the best place for them? Bus services are rubbish, you need a car to drive most places and do most jobs and it's mainly tiny villages in the middle of no where around here. Is it going to be a case of these refugees wanting to go to London or Aberdeen at first opportunity?
  1. This is a genuine curious question, will this families go back to Syria should things get sorted and back to normal over there? Or will they realise how good things can be over here and decide to stay? This is where I don't get why people use the refugees in WW2 as comparison, when children etc were sent into the country they were then sent home again after the war but that is probably not what will happen here?

Ok I really hope this hasn't come across as me being a heartless cow bag because I'm really not I'm just trying to make sense of a lot of things

Nowwatchmewhip · 17/11/2015 12:30

It's about connotation and emotive language.

I balk at 'close our borders'. I immediately feel uncomfortable and dismayed because I fear it's got racist overtones - but the thing is it hasn't always.

I am a liberal lefty but I think a) we should (not close) bring back border controls across Europe and b) I am, to my surprise and perhaps shame, not sitting in condemnation of the French bombing raids.

Times have changed. Radically. This is a different war and a different enemy and even though the West has partly brought this on itself, we find ourselves in the position we are in and we have to try to do something to stop these terrifying people.

As an aside, Facebook is a pile of shite and my life's been better without it.

LimboNovember · 17/11/2015 12:34

The odd thing is, my FB friends cover the political spectrum, everything from true blue, MacMillan loving Tories, to a couple of communists to the politically disinterested. None of them have posted shit like this

Same here its nothing to do with politics.

Borders should never be closed to people in need esp the refugees fleeing ISIS! This more than ever brings their awful plight home to us.

But the governments across the EU have a responsibility to protect their citizens.

They cannot allow rogue gun men to flit from Germany to France, France to Belgium and back again with cars full of guns, heavy artillery, and raving mad Jihadis.

Holland said hours after the attack the borders were closed. But then....the gunman was let through?

Something needs to be done about the porus borders.

I also believe that properly bringing back Europes borders will only reassure those who want to help the refugees but are afraid of the sense of loss of control as well.

An open letter from

"civil servants at the federal office for migration and refugees have published an open letter warning of serious flaws in procedures.

Asylum-seekers are being accepted as Syrians without being asked for any proof of their nationality, they warned.

Those claiming to be Syrian do not need to show passports, according to the letter. The only checking of their identity is carried out by freelance translators who often have little or no experience of Syrian dialects or accents, and are not accountable for any mistakes.

A “large proportion” of asylum-seekers were giving false identities in order to stay in Germany, the letter warned.

“The discontinuation of identity checks has also facilitated infiltration by Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant terrorists into Europe,” it claimed.

^ this is an open letter to Merkel. This sort of thing only inflames the right, as Blairs open door policy to Poland also inflamed our right.

Its maddness.

Elendon · 17/11/2015 12:36

I'm sure they'll organise their time around the 'rubbish' bus services, which will probably seem to them to be a luxury.

I await your first restaurant review as being fabulous and a real boost to the local economy. (understand I'm being somewhat facetious here).

So what if they go off to Aberdeen or London. You are able to do that. Are you not?

They will probably go back to Syria to visit when everything calms down there hopefully. This will add to the local economy too in terms of flights out.

These people are not stupid. They understand totally the refuge they've been given and the chance of continuing the normal life they had until they had to flee.

Elendon · 17/11/2015 12:45

I know Mr Writer of what you speak!

Normally, I just let it pass, because I'm used to it. But this was extreme and pushing buttons. It was clearly a family of Muslim British.

However, I'm so pleased that I no longer have that regarding Norn Iron terrorism. Because, I'm no longer viewed as a potential terrorist.

I do love to go back to the homeland, but equally more love coming back to my home!

Hotpatootietimewarp · 17/11/2015 12:45

elendon thank you for answering. I totally agree of course I was just thinking about it being a bit out of way around here and unless they are placed in Dumfries there are going no to be pretty cut off in most other places, just with us being told to help them integrate it would be hard in some places

Hotpatootietimewarp · 17/11/2015 12:47

They are going to be that should say silly phone
