To think 9pm is too late to deliver parcels

Just after I had ds in bed the door bell went. Several times, then the door was hammered. I was scared of answering it tbh. Fucking Amazon delivery. It's really not on is it? The guy was rude and snapped when I spelt out my name. ( it's a difficult one, and he ended up spelling it wrong anyway) I told him it was late, he said it had to be delivered today, I told him he should have done so earlier.

To make it worse, it's not even my parcel, it's addressed to SiL Angry

Nah, no reason to knock on my door if there's an emergency, can't imagine why anybody would. Don't live near family, so they would call instead.

TeamBacon · 17/11/2015 17:59

It's just that we're on the kind of street where you get lots of charities going round knocking on doors well into the evening, also get ransoms banging on the door on the way back from the pub.. I dunno, I don't like opening the door when it's late and I'm in the house on my own.. Down to a scary experience a few years back.. But why the hell should I explain myself? Couriers shouldn't deliver that late, it's daft.

"Nah, no reason to knock on my door if there's an emergency, can't imagine why anybody would. Don't live near family, so they would call instead."

That's a rather naive point of view. What if it was a neighbour telling you your house was on fire upstairs, or the police?

I don't "get" people who don't answer their door either. Although I do think that 11pm is rather late to get a delivery. Amazon always text/email when they are going to deliver these days, so I don't see why a delivery should come as a surprise.

TeamBacon · 18/11/2015 16:32

Oh fgs. If my neighbour was hammering on my door if course I'd answer. I'm not a bloody idiot Hmm

TeamBacon · 18/11/2015 16:33

And yes, that 11pm amazon delivery was a surprise. It had said it was going to arrive the following day.

Fabraine · 18/11/2015 16:46

I'm getting better at opening the door (anxiety issues) but there is no chance in hell I'd open at 11pm if alone in the house. I'd imagine someone telling me the house was on fire would make themselves understood eg by shouting through the letterbox.

Our en suite bathroom window opens over the front door, so if I was surprised by a late night caller I would just stick my head out of the window and call down.

I think I might stop ordering from Amazon, I don’t like the unpredictability of their own delivery service and I’m not sure that it’s any faster than Royal Mail.

It's my son's birthday tomorrow and the Now 92 CD is out tomorrow too. I ordered it from Amazon, hoping it would arrive on the day as it often has before. BUT it's coming via Amazon Logistics.

Had it come by Royal Mail, it would (probably) have arrived tomorrow morning while he's at school and I could have wrapped it and given it to him when he got home. But as Amazon are delivering it, it could come any time (probably later in the day when we are more likely to be out). It's a nuisance, I wish you could choose how your parcels are delivered, Royal Mail is always more convenient for me.

As for opening the door, no I don't if it's routine. Why is that weird? My house, my privacy. 999 times out of 1000 it will be a cold caller. If the neighbour was hammering on my door because their (or my) house was on fire of course I would open it, it would be obvious that it was urgent.

MyNewBearTotoro · 19/11/2015 10:14

I'd much rather have a 9pm parcel than a 9am one. Me and DP have our children in a late routine so they're rarely asleep by 9pm but usually stil asleep past 9am.

Generally that works for us (both night owls, DP works midday - 7pm) but it is frustrating that the world is generally set up for early risers and then assumes everyone must be done with their day by 5:30pm.

GruntledOne · 19/11/2015 10:43

I wish they'd give the option of a delivery timeslot. I usually put my work address down for deliveries, but if they deliver after 6 p.m. obviously the office is going to be closed. I've had them trying it after hours two or three times in succession, when common sense would suggest that if you've come once and discovered it's an office it might be an idea to aim for office hours.

And there doesn't seem to be any level of organisation about it. One day I was the only person in the office and seemed to spend half the day thundering up and down the stairs to take in not just my own parcels but ones delivered at different times for neighbours on each side. Surely if they organised everything so they delivered everything in the area at the same time it could only help them?

They do offer time slots for a lot of deliveries....you just have to pay for it. Wink I think it cost about £4 or £5 with Amazon prime deliveries.
