To think 9pm is too late to deliver parcels

Just after I had ds in bed the door bell went. Several times, then the door was hammered. I was scared of answering it tbh. Fucking Amazon delivery. It's really not on is it? The guy was rude and snapped when I spelt out my name. ( it's a difficult one, and he ended up spelling it wrong anyway) I told him it was late, he said it had to be delivered today, I told him he should have done so earlier.

To make it worse, it's not even my parcel, it's addressed to SiL Angry

Meh. They've probably had a long day. I couldn't get upset over this. Amazon are pretty good if to check their website - they tell you if your item is out for delivery - so weren't you expecting it?

Duck90 · 16/11/2015 22:58

I would be pleased also.

Someone said their newborn would be asleep, does that not mean most of the day is out for knocking onto the door? I thought babies sleep frequently.

Also, when someone rings my door bell, they can't hear if it worked so will knock loudly.

Fayrazzled · 16/11/2015 22:58

Remember he's only getting paid about 45p per delivery as well.

Potatoface2 · 16/11/2015 23:02

so if you had to go to the hospital at 9pm would that be too late....or go get some milk from tescos, would that be to late....people work all hours nowadays....if his contract says 10pm he works til 10pm....its what he is paid to do....i would be more annoyed as to why is your SIL having it delivered to you....moan at her!

hufflebottom · 16/11/2015 23:04

I waited in all day for a parcel and when it arrived after 9 the driver was one who had already delivered to next door around 1pm.

Duck90 · 16/11/2015 23:07

Huffle, I understand that was annoying. But he may have gone back for another collection at the depot? Or maybe you annoyed him before and he deliberately made you wait Smile

hufflebottom · 16/11/2015 23:21

Dunno. I was washing the car at the time. So don't think I annoyed him. Unless it was because I was breathing. Smile

Bit of a wasted trip for him though.

Senpai · 16/11/2015 23:29

My delivery people sneak my packages on my doorstep like little elves before tip toeing away. The only way I know they're there is through text alerts. Hmm

Plomino · 16/11/2015 23:36

That courier has been on the go since he packed his van load at 7am , after queuing with up to 40 other drivers . Assuming the lorry with the goods on has turned up at the depot on time , which doesn't always happen . A load consisting of about 160 parcels , covering an area where the distances between parcels can be easily 30 or 40 miles apart. If the parcel makes it onto his load , then he has to deliver it , even if it's been put there by mistake. He gets no time to stop for eating , no breaks , and even if he has a good day and finishes at a reasonable hour , may well end up picking up parcels from another courier driver who isn't being so successful . And when they've finished , they have to get back to the depot , sign back anything they haven't managed to deliver , get their van searched by security , then make it home . Sometimes , that's past midnight , although they stop actually delivering at about 9pm They get one day off a week. So whilst it doesn't excuse it , maybe you were one of the last on a very long day . Maybe you should have a chat with your SIL , if you're not happy to accept the parcels , because she's obviously accepted the t and c 's .

catdoodles · 17/11/2015 00:07

You are very unkind if you have made a complaint about the driver.

Have a bit of empathy for the guy who probably had to deal with lots of snotty customers like you who moan about nothing making them even later for the next person.

Dancergirl · 17/11/2015 00:09

YABVU

Being a courier is a shit job, he probably works long hours for little pay and has to put up with people like you complaining that their delivery time is inconvenient.

Put yourself in his shoes. What's he supposed to do at 9pm with undelivered parcels?

Maybe avoid online shipping if it's that much of an issue for you.

balletgirlmum · 17/11/2015 00:18

I get all my parcels delivered to work. The office closes at 5pm.

9pm would be far too late at home. I don't answer the door after about 8.30pm in the winter.

Fatmomma99 · 17/11/2015 01:15

i look forward to your next thread about how your on line christmas presents haven't shown up.

Jeeze! They can't do right, can they!

greenfolder · 17/11/2015 06:54

Mm. Had to get up from armchair and move to front door at 9pm. Was scared cos it's dark and erm 9pm. Man delivering said parcel was a bit curt. Knocked loudly in door to attract attention. Well, yabu to actually complain about him.

greenfolder · 17/11/2015 06:58

Do people really not answer the door after 8.30 or 9? I mean how many times is the door knocked? I would be more likely to answer the door at that time or later. Less likely to be the witnesses and more likely to be someone that needs me! Ponders living in a parallel universe again.

Whathaveilost · 17/11/2015 07:10

I really haven't got a problem with it tbh. I'd be fine up to around 10.00/10.30

In fact I wish ours dropped off at that 9.00pm

Oysterbabe · 17/11/2015 07:16

I find the not answering door thing bizarre too, why on earth wouldn't you?

Bunbaker · 17/11/2015 07:21

He probably knew you were one of those strange mumsnetters who think it is an imposition to answer the door. You failed to respond to the doorbell and it was clear that the house wasn't empty. So, what was he supposed to do?

He would probably have been penalised for not delivering a parcel to a house where it was obvious the occupants were in.

Get a grip.

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 17/11/2015 07:21

I wouldn't mind. At least I'd be in to receive it. Better than coming home to a missed parcel note. I had one of those on Friday. They'd left it with a neighbour and I'm sure I disturbed them having a shag when I went to get it Blush

Sparklingbrook · 17/11/2015 07:29

Sounds good to me. I too would just be glad to have my delivery.

PurpleThermalsNowItsWinter · 17/11/2015 07:30

9pm late? Really?
I remember uni days of suddenly deciding to go out at 10pm, giving us an hour to get ready. Although I admit I'm more likely to be heading to bed with a book and a hot chocolate around 9pm (more to snuggle in a warm bed and be on the same floor level as my DC than any other reason) but even I answer the door at 9pm. I received text messages last night at 12:30, 1am and 1:45am, a 'save the date for this Christmas party' text from some different close friends - that's too late.

Artandco · 17/11/2015 07:37

Why wouldn't you open the door at 9pm? You know soon it will be dark by 4pm, do you stop doing anything or answering doors after 4pm?

DoctorTwo · 17/11/2015 07:37

I did this job for about 5 years and the itinerary at this time of year is tough. Typically a driver gets to the depot at 6.30am to help sort the overnight trunkers before sorting, ordering, loading and scanning their route. You hope to leave the depot by 8ish, you may have 100 delivery stops + collections to get through. When you've done your work you get back to the depot at about 6pm, sort your undelivered and collections, debrief and often get asked to go back out to deliver 20 or so parcels that arrived on a late trunk. You probably finish around 10pm. This is your life Monday to Friday, and all for about £400pw.

I gave up the job as the stress induced panic attacks got too much. Even typing this out is causing me to sweat and increase my heart rate.

Sparklingbrook · 17/11/2015 07:47

Amazon are good at emailing to let you know it's out for delivery. It's a shame your SIL didn't let you know OP.

Rivercam · 17/11/2015 07:47

I'm with the op on this and think after 9pm is not on either. Food deliveries are different because you pre-arrange that time.

I appreciate that courier drivers are busy, but that's not the Op's fault.
