It's got some of the worst air quality in Europe and several studies have shown that many a year are killed by it.

Nothing drastic is done to change this. They are still oushing taxis to be all diesels and giving people with diesels cheaper road tax and the rise is in part due to the push to disels.

Also they have reduced the congestion charge and I think carried on allowing free parking in the west end, even though london has one of the best transport systems in the world.

Other cities with w problem have started to use the river for transports and banned number plates on certain days. London seems to do very little. If anything else was causing so many deaths something wild be done.

This is why I have to roll my eyes when some Mumsnetters complain about a tiny bit of cigarette smoke, being blown around in the outdoors.

Where do you get your figures? I know we are due a fine for air quality, I didn't know it was that bad.

There's a bit of difference between 10000 and 20000.

I assume the OP is refering to this study from earlier this year.

The article hints that deaths may actually be declining, but as it was the first time that the data was studied in this way, there don't seem to be any trends available yet.

It's not clear cut though- the most polluted area is in Kensington and Chelsea which has the best figures for life expectancy in he uk.
I've lived in London for 30 years and it's massively, noticeably more congested. But the nimby fuss whenever councils try to reduce traffic (one way systems, cycle routes etc.) and lack of will to spend the £££££ to get traffic off the roads suggests that people just aren't that bothered.

People dont give a shit unless directly affected, lost someone to respiratory illness etc. As this thread proves. Thats the English mindset.

They have calculated that 2010 London pollution would reduce average life expectancy by about a year for anyone who lived in that area for life.

They have then multiplied this by the London population to get 140,000 life years lost each year and then decided this is equivalent to 10,000 deaths a year.

The actual story is 'London pollution reduces life expectancy by 1 year'.

Oh how tragic.

London is much better than it was; I used to live there and then commute there, and now you don't get the black bits up your nose. Prevailing wind will mean eastern districts are dirtier.

yes, diesels are mucky. All public London vehicles should be electric (ideal situation for that) but too expensive. Also with our generating capacity falling apart, not a good idea.

Give it a couple of decades and this type of thread will be just as entertaining as the wisp of smoke drifting through the window threads.

I thought all diesels after 2005 were fitted with a dpf filter to take care of emissions. Means you use more fuel and can wreck your engine if the filter gets clogged up but hey the air will be cleaner.

Filters reduce particulates (soot) but not oxides of nitrogen.

I imagine a lot of the diesel-related pollution in London will be from commercial vehicles - might help to ban older trucks or require them to be retrofitted with modern exhaust treatment (new ones will be cleaner).

Totally agree, sadly.

Problem is with these filters is they totally knack your car if you don't do a blast on a motorway once a week or so, get the engine good and hot. Diesels are no good for mostly short journeys if they are fitted with that damn filter. I don't think they should be fitted to commercial older vehicles.

Maybe London should be electric only, it would be amusing to observe the outrage while in the next breath whinging about smokers anyroad.

The traffic does seem to be getting worse and worse. I'm always amazed the number of people who choose to drive for short trips on London rather than walk/bus. Selfish idiots that more often than not also block the fucking pedestrian crossings too
