Ugh is it just my friends? when it's someone's birthday / leaving do / baby shower (!?) / end of school year they post pictures of all their cards and presents set out in a big pile. Drives me mad!! And sure I will see a LOT of this on Christmas!!

I do wonder why people don't make private albums of their pictures to show family and chosen friends instead of bombarding everybody with everything in their lives. Posting loads of pics of children always bugs me as there may be a day when those kids grow up and wish they weren't plastered all over the net. Piles of presents on fb sounds quite tacky.

Philoslothy · 14/11/2015 17:45

Maybe it is different if you have a load of random people on your FB page rather than real friends but I have never felt annoyed by seeing a picture of a friend's child, holiday or their Christmas

I suspect I am the tacky FB friend, that gives me a little glow inside

MySordidCakeSecret · 14/11/2015 17:53

very, very sad imo.

SuperFlyHigh · 14/11/2015 17:55

I have an acquaintance that for her 40th posted a huge pile of her gifts (all designer etc).

She goes to Alton Towers Hotel for short breaks, goes on those luxury villa holidays and rented a house with a pool in UK (didn't buy it though).

I also know when her SO had an affair, left her with a 2 year old and under 5 and she emailed me on FB distraught about it... M

It shows insecurity to me, to show all you have.

Helpmeout81 · 14/11/2015 17:59

Tacky and weird. I hate FB bragging though.

It is awful isn't it? I especially hated Valentines Day this year where women had arranged little piles of gifts and tagged things like 'how loved am I?'. Love does not need to be proved with pictures of plastic tat. Gifts my husband and I got for each other were personal not things to 'show off to the world' yuck!

Fannycraddock79 · 14/11/2015 18:08

Worse than that, I saw the same person put:
1-all baby shower gifts they had received unwrapped on a table like a big display with vouchers spread out like a fan at the front.
2-they did the same for their wedding presents.

I found this tacky beyond belief-the voucher bit.

HackAttack · 14/11/2015 18:11

That said I don't mind photos of kids opening presents, that's sweet, more adults comparing what they got, just seems insecure and sad.

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 14/11/2015 18:59

I think it's silly to be so judgy about what people post on Facebook. It's their Facebook. It's purpose is to share things. It's purpose is to give people little snippets of your life, isn't it? And to keep in touch? I mean, otherwise, we all just sit there and what?

You can't write about your relationship.
You can't share photos of happy moments.
You certainly can't share photos of gifts.
You can't sell anything lest it's seen as tacky or pushy.
You can't have political views expressed as you might offend someone.
You can't check in to anywhere or it's seen as show-offy or seeking attention.

So I guess we just use it to share unoriginal memes, recipes, and write statuses that are funny yet not too personal.

Sounds fun.

SuperFlyHigh · 14/11/2015 19:02

Kids opening their presents is fine... But it can also be a bit "look at me what I've got" so unsure if it is really the correct message for children to be sending.

TheBitchOfDestiny · 14/11/2015 20:15

lol saga I generally ponder about this sometimes

what actually IS acceptable to put on fb?

i even deactivated a few times lately, for several reasons, but one of which i was worried i was a twat on there Blush

TheBitchOfDestiny · 14/11/2015 20:16

^^ genuinely ponder i mean ffs

Flambola · 14/11/2015 20:34

Have to agree with Usual here. I like seeing my friends and family happy and have never thought them insecure, materialistic or 'braggy' for posting pics of presents, holidays etc.

Flambola · 14/11/2015 20:35

A lot of you are coming across like bitter snobs!

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 14/11/2015 21:06

Hear, hear Flambola!

SuperFlyHigh · 14/11/2015 21:09

flambola sorry I beg to differ...

But then again I'm not ostentatious, don't like big F off labels etc...

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 14/11/2015 21:13

I beg to differ on your beg to differing! Grin

hazeyjane · 14/11/2015 21:15

Jeesus, I read that as, 'I even defecated a few times...'

Now posting pictures of that would be unacceptable!

PiperChapstick · 14/11/2015 21:39

YANBU. I can't think of any good reason to show just the presents other than to show off. Fair enough ones of child opening them for the family member who got that, but just the pile is part of the whole FB game of showiness, one-upmanship and making out you're having a better time/are a better parent than the next person.

SIL is terrible for this. A couple of years ago she put a pic on of her DD opening a PS4 which said "Emily got a PS4 wow!". Thing is she bought her it, so not sure why she needed to sound surprised Hmm. I felt like putting "yes that makes up for the crap parenting you've done this year including walking out on your whole family to live with the man from work you've been shagging, taking the dogs but leaving your kids"
