Is having your bra on show tacky?

I've talking about the front of your bra showing

I want to buy a plunging neckline playsuit.

It's kind of obviously made for women with a smaller chest.

I'm a size 8 and my cup size is DD/E.

The playsuit is black and obviously I would wear a black (non lacy) bra too.

Is this a very tacky look?

How much bra are we talking? Also, depends on your age; if you're 21, you might get away with it more than if you were 51.

kali110 · 11/11/2015 14:09

Im confused by the size 8 means a 28,30.

Would a 10 also fit a 30 and a 32?
Im a 12 most of tge time on top but a 34c ( 36c in some bras).

I love showing the back of my bra in lacy tops, or low tops!
Especislly if they have funky straps!
I couldn't care less!
The front, ( unless im wearing a sheer top or a slightly see through top) then not so much.

kali - have a look at some of the bra intervention threads. The basic premise is that most people are wearing the wrong size bra - far too large in the back and too small in the cup. For example, I'm a size 18/20, and I wear a 36 back (and a 34 in some makes) - I'd be astonished if you and I had anything like the same size back measurement.

There's a couple of older threads: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/style_and_beauty/a1749199-Bra-intervention-have-I-got-this-right and www.mumsnet.com/Talk/style_and_beauty/1817742-Feel-cheeky-asking-this-what-are-the-basics-of-bra-intervention from a quick search

Can I add to Erin Brockovitch... Amy Winehouse. TBH I think both of them rocked and you should wear what you want. But that's what I associate the look with.

green18 · 11/11/2015 14:26

There are all sorts of bras around now and you can even get those self adhesive cups that celebs wear for those sorts of outfits. I always consider what underwear i'd wear before buying an outfit tbh. I wouldn't purposely go out with my bra showing. But then some people think a black bra under a light top is ok so i'm not sure these rules apply anymore. It's what you're happy with and the fact that you're asking suggests you know the answer!

green18 · 11/11/2015 14:27

Amy Winehouse was a popstar so could get away with that. But, she looked like a hooker so not sure i'd be aiming for that look.

ouryve · 11/11/2015 14:32

If you're determined to wear it, you definitely need a better bra.

I occasionally flash a bit of bra, unintentionally, in summer. DS1, being of a certain age, has no qualms about sniggering about it. So, I would warn you, that if you have older kids, they may be mortified by your choice of outfit.

ouryve · 11/11/2015 14:35

As for the size 8, upthread, I'm an, erm, generous size 14 and a 34H would be far too big for me. As a 32GG, I have some size 14 tops that I've had to temporarily retire because they stretch too much across my 41" chest.

amarmai · 11/11/2015 17:38

some bras are too gorgeous to hide! I notice a new trend in mags-the bra on top of the top? With the right bra , you'll look great ,op. Go for it!

lightupmynight · 11/11/2015 19:18

I'm a size 8 with 34H boobs and I've got a playsuit which doesn't show my bra, from Debenhams. £12 in the sale! You just need to find the right fit.

Its got nothing to do with the fit, thats the style of the playsuit

yeOldeTrout · 11/11/2015 19:40

I don't like bras deliberately on show. Don't care what you do but I'd be mortified to dress like that so I guess it's not my preference.

Jengnr · 11/11/2015 19:52

Meh. Just do it. It's only a bra.

Whoever decided 'playsuit' is an acceptable term for adult women's clothing wants shooting though.

Merguez · 11/11/2015 20:03

Why can't you wear a camisole or vest type top under it?

EponasWildDaughter · 11/11/2015 20:06

How far is the plunge?

If it's just a flash of the top of the center of the bra then i doubt anyone will even notice.

If the cut of the neckline is open all the way down, then it's meant to be worn in one of two ways -

1 no bra, flat chest, plunge between boobs so nothing on display usually useing tape to keep the edges in place. Bit of a red carpet look.

2 camisole underneath.

CakeNinja · 11/11/2015 20:14

How far down does it open to?

whattheseithakasmean · 11/11/2015 20:18

I would wear a vest top underneath - perhaps sparkly for a flash of glitz.

Bra on show is tacky, but sometimes tacky can be a look (a la Amy Winehouse), so your call, really.

IonaNE · 11/11/2015 20:21

It's called underwear for a reason.

AngelSparks · 11/11/2015 21:27

have you got a pic of the outft in question?

lightupmynight · 11/11/2015 21:53

Yes thats close to it mannequin

Wearing any top underneath it would just ruin the outfit.

OP posts:
lightupmynight · 11/11/2015 21:57

This is similar, but the bra would be less on show.

OP posts:
AngelSparks · 11/11/2015 22:18

Erm. ... at the risk of sounding like your granny.. you'll catch your death in that

That (to me ) is.. tacky and horrible, and having your bra on show would not make it any more so..

Lweji · 11/11/2015 22:20

You can wear bras or camis, like here www.hitched.co.uk/chat/forums/t/383241.aspx

or as shown here

lightupmynight · 11/11/2015 22:21

Could be a generation thing though?

I'm in my early 20s.

OP posts:
jevoudrais · 11/11/2015 22:21

I disagree, I think it would look tacky if you wore a contrasting bra because it looks like you're trying to show it off. I'm not a fan of fluorescent bras and white tops or anything which generally shows off your bra. I just don't get it. With some items of clothing there will inevitably be bra visible if people are looking e.g. from the side or looking directly down but that really can't be helped.

You could always wear a (low cut) vest top underneath if you're worried about it looking bad. It depends just how high the bra comes up IMO, but I don't think its major.
