Worried for friend that has gone raw vegan and just sat there during a lunch out

I've got a friend who has been doing this raw vegan diet for almost 10 months. She sticks to it religiously. She is looking good and is not underweight. But she has cut out virtually every food group apart from nuts, fruit and veg. Long term this doesn't seem like a good idea.

We went out yesterday to an nt place, and for lunch she just had a peppermint tea and ate nothing, then after lunch nibbled on some seeds as we were walking around. Doesn't sound healthy right?

Your friend sounds very intelligent. I wish she were my friend. Smile

MumOnTheRunAgain · 09/11/2015 20:56

Mayb she's like me and was planning a run/workout and doesn't do well on a full stomach?

thedevilinmyshoes · 09/11/2015 20:56

is it unhealthy to be overweight, not obese, overweight?

AyeAmarok · 09/11/2015 21:05

Well if I had a choice of being a healthy weight or overweight, I am fairly sure I'd not choose the latter.

But, each to their own!

thedevilinmyshoes · 09/11/2015 21:11

I thought overweight = lowest mortality for women

TalkinPeas · 09/11/2015 21:14

thedevilinmyshoes
The lowest mortality was at BMI of 25.2
but the bottom of the curve was very flattened
and death is not all there is ...
there is also the factor of years of healthy life
and the data on that shows that reducing body fat is a no brainer

ICantSpellNoffink · 09/11/2015 21:28

I don't understand why people are bothered or offended if someone chooses not to eat. Confused

MumOnTheRunAgain · 09/11/2015 21:34

Some people just like to post goady threads.... They know what the outcome will be

ghostyslovesheep · 09/11/2015 21:36

not the OP posted this almost 12 hours ago and hasn't even bothered to come back - classic goad

CoteDAzur · 09/11/2015 21:42

"Statistically - two thirds of women are overweight. This vegan friend is not overweight. Being overweight is unhealthy. Therefore she is likely to be more healthy than most people on here."

That's hilarious. That one bit of info you have about OP's friend means she is healthier than people here because your understanding of statistics leads you to believe that MNers are overweight?

Well, I'm not overweight. Am I healthier than everyone else on MN? Statistically, of course Wink

DeoGratias · 09/11/2015 21:46

Only in England amongst the fat mothers of mumsnet could people possibly be arguing that fat people sitting eating national trust teas, jam and cakes was somehow the healthy way to live!

No wonder we are all getting so fat.

AyeAmarok · 09/11/2015 22:13

Cote do you have a problem with reading comprehension? Apologies if you do, but I'm glad you're finding it so funny.

If you take a random sample of people who are a healthy weight, and a group of people who are overweight, obese and morbidly obese, for example, you will find that the group who are a healthy weight are healthier, on average, than the heavier group.

That's not taking into account that the results are probably skewed even more, because people whose curiosity is piqued by a topic about diets are more likely to be those who have an interest in them...

Who also, as it happens, may be more inclined to peddle myths such as "people who can stick to a diet are miserable and no fun", "men hate stick insects and want real women", "anyone under 9stone is severely malnourished" and "slim people starve themselves and lie about it, pretending they eat, nobody is naturally slim", with people sharing anecdotes about how a celeb/friend looked gaunt after losing weight and how they are "just concerned". Which is what these threads always tend to descend into, eventually.

It's like some weird version of Godwin's Law.

CoteDAzur · 09/11/2015 22:20

Reading comprehension, no less Smile

Yes, it is pretty funny and getting more hilarious by the minute, with you questioning my reading comprehension skills while missing the point of my last post.

I have studied statistics and your statements below are wrong in so many ways that it would take me half an hour to explain it all to you. Suffice it to say that your generalisations are not meaningful, and neither are redundant statements about how people "who are a healthy weight are healthier".

AyeAmarok · 09/11/2015 23:30

Congratulations on studying statistics. I can do without the explanation though, thanks all the same. I am wrong for drawing statistical generalisations. If only I'd paid more attention at university I'd be able to make more accurate ones like your first two posts:

I hope you all fussed over her throughout lunch and the afternoon, showering her with love and attention as merit such special snowflakes.

Is based on the exact same post by the OP, and yet you apparently know this because all people following a vegan diet are chronic attention seekers, probably have "psychological issues" just because they are "fussy about food" for the sole reason that they didn't eat a shitty cake from a NT café? Okay then...

You live in your world, I'll live in mine.

MumOnTheRunAgain · 09/11/2015 23:34

Aye I prefer your world.... Your posts make more sense for a start!

AyeAmarok · 09/11/2015 23:48

Cheers MOTRA Grin

DeoGratias · 10/11/2015 07:15

It's all pretty simple. More women than not in the UK are fat and obesity is a major problem. We eat too many National Trust tea type foods - carbs, sugar etc.

A very few people eat healthy foods and tend to be happier and healthier for it.

I don't think any of us really need to be told this.

lljkk · 10/11/2015 09:16

Then why do you keep banging on about it, DG.

ForeverLivingMyArse · 10/11/2015 09:19

Does hummus count as raw vegan?

Twizzelgrl · 10/11/2015 09:21

I've never met a vegan that didn't look pale and unwell. Its a scientific fact we needed meat to evolve. She sounds attention seaking.

lljkk · 10/11/2015 09:34

Hummus must be out, and any veg oil that wasn't cold pressed too I should think. But then drinks made by boiling should be out, or hot soups. ( cries a little at the thought of life without hummus or soup )

This guy makes me laugh. He basically bounces around from one extreme diet to another.

My old boss is a Vegan for 35+ yrs & incredibly fit, healthy, energetic. Mostly well balanced in every way, but also a bit extremist, deffo. :)

ForeverLivingMyArse · 10/11/2015 09:36

That's me out, no soup or hummus. Sad

OnlyLovers · 10/11/2015 09:37

I've never met a vegan that didn't look pale and unwell.

I know several. Hmm

LovelyFriend · 10/11/2015 09:54

You can make hummous from sprouted chick peas - that would be fine on a raw diet.

Can you just imagine the reverse:

"We went out yesterday to an nt place, and for lunch she had a buttered scone, a sausage bap with tomato sauce and a hot chocolate. I mean it was all highly processed carbs, fat, nitrate preserved meat and sugar. Doesn't sound healthy right?"

LaContessaDiPlump · 10/11/2015 10:20

Would you like me to send you a picture of myself, twizzelgrl? I'm a size 18 and fairly ruddy of complexion. I do eat fruit, let the record show.
