Fucking Christmas duvets??

I LOVE Christmas, so this is in no way a bah humbug thing, but does anyone else think it's getting way out of hand? Every year there is a new "thing"; Christmas jammies, Christmas eve boxes, advent calendar with actual toys (eg lego ones, playdoh ones etc), elf on the shelf, 24 advent Christmas books and now I see there are bloody Christmas duvet sets! When did these all become "traditions"? Only in the last 5 years? I sound like my mother! Christmas has become over-commercialised! AIBU or is it expensive enough without having to add to the expense! Imagine if you have more than 1 child! Is it competitive parenting? Is it over-compensation for shit parenting? Am I just being an old cow? Sorry I just saw the Christmas duvet tonight and it's proved to be my tipping point.

I need Christmas bedding right now, well in all fairness any bedding will do.

3yo has just climbed into my bed and puked all over it. It would t be so bad but it's the 6th time today!

MorrisZapp · 11/11/2015 21:46

Got to admit I totally covet that red and white crockery that Nigella allegedly collects from eBay.

And I'm sorely tempted by M&S mince pie liqueur :)

MidniteScribbler · 11/11/2015 21:54

I can't believe they've pinched my book advent calendar idea. I've been doing that one since DS was born (and buying books and planning for it for all the years I was TTCing before that. He has a tree in his room, and all the books are wrapped underneath it. Every night we read one book and put an ornament that goes with it on the tree. I love it, and don't really care if people think it's over the top.

It's my Christmas and I'll poop tinsel if I want to.

TheLeavesAreTurningBrown · 11/11/2015 22:02

Mataln had rally nice stag duvets today in brushed cotton and tesco had some lvoely xmas jumpers

InternalMonologue · 11/11/2015 22:05

That's nice! I think I might go for a Christmas T-shirt instead Everyone loves Snoopy

by way - anyone interesed in branching out to kids plates tat.....^ this was beautiful from m and s...really really lovely

Sparklingbrook · 11/11/2015 22:10

That Snoopy tshirt is really nice. The thing about the jumpers is that with all the shops being boiling hot and everywhere heated these days they are just too hot.

imwithspud · 11/11/2015 22:15

We do chocolate advent calendars through December and new pyjamas on Christmas Eve. We will do the whole carrot for Rudolph thing too. Not a fan of elf on the shelf, just seems like far to much hard work, although I do wonder if dd1 would enjoy it, and I think Christmas Eve boxes are a bit over the top too. Dc's can have new pj's, hot chocolate, Christmas stories and Christmas movies without the need for a fancy box. Dd1 is only 3, so we've still got time to figure out what our traditions will be. I'm wondering if I'll end up getting sucked in by the elf thing, at the moment I have zero interest in it but like others have said sometimes the madness takes over.

Saw a nice looking Christmas/winter themed duvet in asda the other day but we have a winter duvet set already.

imwithspud · 11/11/2015 22:18

Oh and I'm not completely sold on the toy advent calendars. They seem expensive for what they are. I'll stick with our £1 chocolate ones from home bargains (yes, we all get one. Even me and dp).

m0therofdragons · 11/11/2015 22:20

I wanted to do this but can't find one I like enough. I was planning on it for dh and I - wouldn't bother for the dc. Not sure they'd notice [selfish mum alert]. Tbh it hadn't occurred to me to do it for the dc - 3 sets of bedding? No way. Just thinking about myself clearly

ouryve · 11/11/2015 22:20

The mince pie martini is nice, but not as nice as the tangerine (or might be orange) gin.

thegiddylimit · 11/11/2015 22:26

I really really want Christmas toilet paper now.

We have a pile of Christmas books that get taken out on the first of December. Don't think we have 24 yet but I buy a few more books every year (DD1 is now 7 so we have everything from 'That's not my Reindeer' to Holly Webb), I do love the Christmas books.

We also do an activity advent calendar although the kids know Mummy gets a bit shite at remembering to do stuff as the month goes on. We have stuff like 'watch Nativity! DVD' as an activity on school nights and 'go to the pantomime' for weekend activities so it's really just a formalisation of what we'd do normally. I'm very bah humbug about chocolate advent calendars though.

We have done Christmas pyjamas but only when the kids actually needed new pyjamas and they weren't themed.

I have to admit I do have Christmas tea towels which is probably a bit OTT but they are tasteful reindeer ones, honest.

fusionconfusion · 11/11/2015 22:27

My mum just arrived up with... christmas duvets for the kids!!
Woop woop.

Sparklingbrook · 11/11/2015 22:28

Has your Mum just arrived FOR CHRISTMAS fusion? Shock

HesterShaw · 11/11/2015 22:30

Christmas became way too commercialised many, many years ago.

This year DH and I are having friends over for a non-commercial Christmas. I'm looking forward to it for the first time in years :) We're even going to have a blazing Yule log (fa la la la laaaah la la la la)

reni2 · 11/11/2015 22:42

For Christmas jumpers, peacocks is best, see this beauty. Knitted Elf Jumper. My life is complete.

Fucking Christmas duvets??
zipzap · 11/11/2015 22:45

I've just remembered that I have some christmas bin bags - got them in B&m a few years ago - some are christmas puddings and some are santa.

They come out every year, I use them (lined with a hidden recycling bag) to collect paper when we open presents. I then use one or two to put rubbish out in to make the binmen smile (they're not that strong!) and they stay on the shelf until they get used the next christmas Grin

CharleyDavidson · 11/11/2015 22:46

I wanted this duvet from m&s

Can't afford it.

Settled for this instead.

It's not as soft and thick, but is more winter than Christmas, so can be used for longer. I've grown to like it more than the first one now.

fusionconfusion · 12/11/2015 00:37

God, I hope not Sparkling.

Though she did bring the M and S Christmas food catalogue and a lot of crochet so who knows? Wink

(she is quite sad the duvets won't be put into use before Christmas week, so perhaps she's going to stage a festive sit in!)

Sillysausage2 · 12/11/2015 01:01

Don't forget the matching mother and daughter Christmas dresses.
Another thing to make you feel guilty about not spending money on!

I do like the idea of the 24 books wrapped but I'd be doing it with books we already had, DD could pick one each day and we'd have a snuggle while reading it together

I'm totally looking for a Christmas duvet set next time I'm in primark

reni2 · 12/11/2015 09:22

Admit it, OP, you are a representative of the Board of British Christmas Duvet Producers. You've drummed up business with the thread Grin Grin.

TheLeavesAreTurningBrown · 12/11/2015 10:17

charley I love that asda one, I too had been perusing that first one. But for 12 quid, how can you go wrong. what does it look like on the bed> I got a tree one last year from m and s and took it back as on the bed, the print of the photo was really obvious and you couldnt get any sense of winter or tree ( ie pic was too big and best looked from afar)

reni if only I could get DH into that!

TheLeavesAreTurningBrown · 12/11/2015 10:20

silly I couldnt think of anything worse than mother and dd dresses
