Why do American recipes always specify kosher salt? What's wrong with non-kosher salt (assuming you're not Jewish)

HandsomeGroomGiveHerRoom · 08/11/2015 20:48

Is kosher salt just coarse sea salt?

squoosh · 08/11/2015 20:59

Yes.

reallybadidea · 08/11/2015 21:13

Oh right. What makes it kosher then?

squoosh · 08/11/2015 21:15

'The term "kosher salt" comes from its use in making meats kosher by removing surface blood, not from its being made in accordance with the guidelines for kosher foods as written in the Torah, as nearly all salt is kosher, including ordinary table salt.'

Preminstreltension · 08/11/2015 21:18

Grin at the contribution in the comments section about it being delicious served with a fresh green salad. That is so not the way to serve a sausage roll.

Americans also don't have blackcurrants. Weird.

reallybadidea · 08/11/2015 21:23

Well I've learned something today.

OTheHugeManatee · 08/11/2015 21:29

You can't buy proper cheese there either, except in specialty shops Confused

CreepyCrawly · 08/11/2015 21:34

I heard an American describe a Yorkshire pudding as 'exotic' recently

x2boys · 08/11/2015 21:35

No Premin its supposed to be served piping hot accompanied by a fruitshoot no green salad in sight Grin

CantSee4Looking · 08/11/2015 21:42

Dammit, i now have an urge to go make sausage rolls seeing as it is sunday and the shops are shut.
Hmm

CantSee4Looking · 08/11/2015 21:43

Although in reverse, you can't get proper fish cakes in the uk. Also why the hell do the english poach fish in MILK? Confused

Preminstreltension · 08/11/2015 21:45

So you make can make a white sauce for the fish pie or the parsley sauce....

x2boys · 08/11/2015 21:45

well i suppose some people must CantSee but i cant think of anything more revolting than fish poached in milk.

x2boys · 08/11/2015 21:50

and whats this biscuits and gravy thing i saw jenelle cook on teen mom it looked like a savoury dish and nothing like i would describe our biscuits and gravy not that i can ever imagine eating british biscuits and gravy togetherConfused

LunchpackOfNotreDame · 08/11/2015 21:53

I'm crying at the comments. It's like it's some kind of haute cuisine

LunchpackOfNotreDame · 08/11/2015 21:57

Also am I the only person who makes sausage rolls with shortcrust? Much easier and tastier

Flashbangandgone · 08/11/2015 22:16

Easier still just to buy them! Good on those who actually make their own sausage rolls but I imagine it's a clear minority.

BrendaandEddie · 08/11/2015 22:18

with predone pastry its very fast and way nicer than shop bought claggy ones

agree shortcrust less greasy

HerRoyalNotness · 08/11/2015 22:25

Biscuits are savoury, almost like a savoury scone, almost. You get them at KFC instead of fries here too Sad

CantSee4Looking · 08/11/2015 22:25

Has short crust ready to roll, has sausages

x2boys - glad someone else agrees.

Preminstreltension - surely one would start with a rue to make the white sauce? Confused

Devilishpyjamas · 08/11/2015 22:33

Eh? What do you mean american's don't have blackcurrants? Really? :falls over:

They have lots of recipes that include tinned soup though :boak:

Preminstreltension · 08/11/2015 22:35

Yes you start with a roux and add the milk from the fish. If you can be bothered. Otherwise you crack open a Greggs sausage roll Grin

Want2bSupermum · 08/11/2015 22:38

Myers of keswick here in Manhattan have all your meat pies, sausage rolls and scotch eggs not cheap but very tasty. DH brings home the bacon literally!

Blackcurrents are not available here. I found a blackcurrent Italian soda once but they didn't restock after I cleared the shelf.

squoosh · 08/11/2015 22:38

Blackcurrants were banned from being grown at one stage. Can't remember.

That's why they have so many grape flavoured things instead.
