AIBU to think cheese and beans on toast still counts for tea?

It's my DDs favourite tea by miles, she's only 2.5.
I figure if she has a balanced diet every other day then Cheese and beans with toast is fine on a Saturday night.
She has a slice of wholemeal bread, cut into soldiers and then half a tin of beans in a bowl with a little lighter mature cheddar.

Is that OK or should I be hung drawn and quartered? Smile

I've just had cheese and beans on toast because of this thread! YANBU!!

poorbuthappy · 07/11/2015 21:15

Cheesy beef gravy. Best thing ever.

LeaveMyWingsBehindMe · 07/11/2015 21:20

I don't know why you are bothering with light cheese but the rest is fine. Half a tin of beans is quite a lot for a 2 year old though.

We love cheese beanos in our house but it's got to be made with full fat cheese and white bread with proper butter. Shock. We also don't bother with veg on cheese beanos night because it's filling enough on its own.

I've got the munchies now!

As well as beans and cheese on toast, I also like tinned ravioli and a handful of grated cheese - full fat damn it! With or without buttered toast - I prefer with.

CheerfulYank · 07/11/2015 22:32

Scholes I really don't like marmite but j might give it one more try... :)

CheerfulYank · 07/11/2015 22:34

TalkinPeas that looks amazing! I thought they would be more tomatoey though?

Maybe I will make them tomorrow! DH will be gone hunting all day and the kids and I can make them for fun. :)

TalkinPeas · 07/11/2015 22:35

you can up the tomato
miss out the meat
reduce the molasses

basically once you get the core recipe its like a ragu : it changes with your mood

Someone remind me to be grateful that beans are easier in the UK. :)

It is absolutely fine beans are veg and protein it's a balanced meal also popular at our house are cheese and bean toasties or beans and cheese on waffles!! Dh would be most put out if I tried to give him any of this though he would think it's not a 'proper' meal!

CheerfulYank · 07/11/2015 22:51

Oh, we certainly have baked beans, SeeYou! I've just always heard that ours are more sugary and I'm after the authentic experience, y'see. :o Plus they will make the house smell lovely.

noeffingidea · 07/11/2015 22:53

Beans on toast is a complete protein meal, for the benefit of vegetarians. A bit of cheese on top will provide some fat and calcium as well.
I like it with worcestershire sauce on top.

Seeyounearertime · 07/11/2015 22:57

I find the house smells less than lovely about 30 minutes after eating them. Grin

Haha true! We are a gassy bunch in the best of times Blush

Brioche201 · 07/11/2015 23:25

Fgs. Don't put Marmite on the toast. Just totted up and one slice of wholemeal bread half a can of beans and 15 g of nature cheese exceeds her daily salt allowance for the whole day.half a can of beans seems a huge meal for a 2 yr old

Seren85 · 07/11/2015 23:27

thekitchenshed.co.uk/clean-eating-baked-beans/

Sounds pefect to me, its one of my favourite quick dinners as an adult! Admittedly I have it on soya and linseed bread, make my own baked beans and have full fat cheese so its not exactly like when I was a child but still perfect comfort food that is healthy.

Seeyounearertime · 07/11/2015 23:30

Maybe I should clarify, I didn't measure exactly half a tin, it was like 5 table spoons. I had the other half or 3/4 or whatever it worked out at.

That was my lunch at work today!

Seeyounearertime · 07/11/2015 23:42

Also.
General feeling ATM suggests toddlers should have around 2 - 2.5g of salt per day.
Bread: tesco star fresh wholemeal. 0.3g a slice
Beans: tesco beans: 1.3gg per half tin
Cheese: 30g = 0.5g but divide by 6 for 5gg = 0.083
Total: 1.6g with half a tin of beans.

Hope that allays your fears brioche.

I think it's some of the adults that like marmite, toddlers tend to say 'yuk' or 'eeurgh' quite forcefully to it, in my experience Grin

noeffingidea · 08/11/2015 00:18

I think you can get reduced salt (and sugar) beans, as well for anyone that's worried about that they taste crap though

LikeASoulWithoutAMind · 09/11/2015 10:57

My dcs have this quite often - it's actually quite a balanced meal. I do buy the low sugar & salt beans for them though. Not all of them like it with cheese unfortunately.

I wouldn't buy low fat cheese though. Get the real stuff.

Brioche201 · 09/11/2015 14:47

2-3 yr olds should only have 2 grams a day according to th NHS www.nhs.uk/livewell/goodfood/pages/salt.aspx
I don't know WHERE you are getting that salt figure for the cheese from .just checked my low fat mature cheddar and it has over double the amount you say and so has Kerry LowLow -and you are really only using one ounce for 6 people Hmm

Too salty for a 2 yo
