AIBU to think cheese and beans on toast still counts for tea?

It's my DDs favourite tea by miles, she's only 2.5.
I figure if she has a balanced diet every other day then Cheese and beans with toast is fine on a Saturday night.
She has a slice of wholemeal bread, cut into soldiers and then half a tin of beans in a bowl with a little lighter mature cheddar.

Is that OK or should I be hung drawn and quartered? Smile

Beans on toast, a dash of balsamic vinegar scattered over, plenty of parmesan and bit of pepper - lovely! My DD also has beans on toast at least once a week, either for lunch or tea and really gets excited!

Love beans on toast here, as does my 18month old. She is a funny child who eats all pulses but no meat. So tonight she had kidney beans while the rest of us had chilli con carne. With cheese of course and a wrap. Not too different from cheesy beans on toast really!

YABU to put cheese on a roast dinner: otherwise, carry on.

greenhill · 07/11/2015 19:19

If you do it with multi seed bread, five beans or mixed beans, a scrape of marmite on the toast and grated extra mature cheddar, with a glass of jersey milk followed by a fruit salad, you've ticked all the boxes nutritionally and I'd be round like a shot to eat it

Justbatteringon · 07/11/2015 19:23

I think I'm gonna have beans on toast for tea. I got an egg poacher thingy as well so might have one of them too.

bigsnugglebunny · 07/11/2015 19:25

We're trying to fatten up our seriously underweight 9 year old - on dieticians advice, we mix butter and cheese in with the beans for him, the bean juice goes very creamy but he loves it.

Wrcgirl · 07/11/2015 19:27

Once a week is surely fine! Every day, then I would not be so sure!

emwithme · 07/11/2015 19:28

Growing up I used to love cheese on toast with spaghetti hoops and a poached egg on top. I haven't had it in years...

HackerFucker22 · 07/11/2015 19:29

My older dc had pizza for dinner... just pizza!!! baby had veggies and spaghetti bolognese with kidney beans - she has a dairy intolerance

It's not everyday. No biggy.

Sansoora · 07/11/2015 19:46

It sounds great but I'd also serve some veg with it, cherry toms perhaps, or I'd give fruit for dessert.

But you know what? One day a week of not doing it by the book will never hurt anyone so enjoy Smile

Am I the only one who puts salad cream on top?
I keep a bottle especially for beans on toast

MiddleAgeMiddleEngland · 07/11/2015 20:04

Sounds delicious, but I put marmite on the toast first, then the beans, then grated cheese on top.

Favourite meal of a student I know, too Grin

It's a great tea. If you're really keen you can mix a bit of pureed carrot and swede in with the beans - you can barely tell it's there, either looks or taste wise.

WimpyArseWanks · 07/11/2015 20:16

I love beans on toast, I'm going to have some with cheese tomorrow.

CheerfulYank · 07/11/2015 20:16

I remember when I first saw a mention of beans on toast here. I was Shock, it just isn't done in America. Ever. It sounded horrible and weird and double carby.

Since then I've come to think of it as your version of the peanut butter sandwich- quick, cheap, tasty, and reasonably healthy. :) Also the colder it gets here the lovelier some nice hot beans on toast sound! Should I try it??

Seeyounearertime · 07/11/2015 20:20

Some very posh recipes coming out in here! Wow. Loving them all.
I dmit, I have a George forman thingamajig, quite often I make. Cheese toastie with Worcester sauce in the middle then pour a tin of beans over the top and add a water fried egg, more cheese and a twist or two of black pepper to the top. I then eat it and feel like a fat bloated whale

This is a great thread. Most threads like this seem to have handwringing about salt, sugar and condemn any meal that isn't organic and macrobiotic.

That's a good meal and one DD1 enjoys.

Seeyounearertime · 07/11/2015 20:38

@cheerfulyank.
Yes.. Try it.
Start simple. 2 slices of toasted white bread. 1 to Heinz baked beans hand full of cheddar cheese. Wouldn't want you o get too confused by he complicated variations mentioned in the thread. Grin

Okay. I can do this.

I think our beans are more sugary than yours though so maybe I will make my own. Or look for a lower sugar kind.

CheerfulYank - if you're really brave, try it with Marmite.

IHaveBrilloHair · 07/11/2015 20:49

It's food, food, foooooooood
The child has been fed, job done.

poorbuthappy · 07/11/2015 20:55

Way to get cheese on roast dinner:
Beef with cheesy leeks
Pork/chicken cauliflower cheese.
Smile

Wtf? Where's the cheesy gravy? The cheese stuffed stuffing balls? The cheese basted Turkey? The blocks of cheese sculpted and stained with gravy to look like a whole chicken? Or is that too much?
