People have been letting them off for over a week now. I'm sitting in my house and it sounds like the Battle of Britain is going on outside, mainly thanks to one neighbour who thinks it's ace to let off very powerful fireworks. I really hate it, my nerves are shot and if it's anything like last night, it'll be midnight before they stop.

"Not just a few rockets and sparklers these days, everyone seems to set off huge 'sets'.

Actually, the sets -- big boxes which stand still are the safest. Its the flying stuff that can jump in a wrong direction.

PrettyBrightFireflies · 07/11/2015 18:08

The nanny state just sits on the backs of regular people who do nothing wrong. There will always be nutters, criminals, and yobs about who don't give a shit about laws or anything else.

You're right, it does.

But all the while there are nutters, criminals and yobs in my neighbourhood willing to put lives and property at risk, I'd rather they weren't able to purchase explosives in the local supermarket. Confused

As an aside - does anyone know what, if any, manufacturing safeguards are in place to prevent the explosives being removed from supermarket purchased fireworks and combined to create a crude weapon? My local town lost a big store to animal rights activist arson a few years ago.

Bunbaker · 07/11/2015 18:15

I get quite annoyed at people using the term nanny state to justify why they want to do something that most people consider irresponsible or stupid.

I'm jolly glad we have a "nanny state" in many cases. And I think the fact that hundreds of people get injured due to the irresponsible use of fireworks is a case in point.

Without the so called nanny state people would still be driving cars without seat belts/riding motorbikes without crash helmets/smoking indiscriminately everywhere.

Brioche201 · 07/11/2015 18:34

I think a compromise would be to (1) reduce the size of fireworks that the general public can buy and (2) raise the age to buy them to 21

onlyfairychasing · 07/11/2015 18:36

I have PTSD..loud scary bangs not great for the hypervigilance.

HelenaDove · 07/11/2015 18:38

I very much doubt it will happen unfortunately. It would affect their profits.

whois · 07/11/2015 18:39

YABU

I love watching fireworks. Love big public displays. Love seeing sets being set off around the neighbourhood.

Raising the age to 21 would be supported though.

PrettyBrightFireflies · 07/11/2015 18:42

brioche - I'm not sure 21 is old enough tbh.

The State of Maine in US legalised the sale of fireworks in 2012, and this year (4th July) had their first firework related fatality.
A 22 year old man, who set off a firework from his head.

Being blessed with stupidity is not the exclusively the territory of the very young.

Specialsnowflake1 · 07/11/2015 18:45

Meh my dog is spread out and chilled.

Its only for one week a year.

fastdaytears · 07/11/2015 18:46

Not here it's not. 6 weeks minimum. Which I don't get at all.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 07/11/2015 19:00

Bloody fireworks are going off all around atm, sounds like a bloody warzone.

HelenaDove · 07/11/2015 19:03

Same here.

Gruntfuttock · 07/11/2015 19:05

Same here. I hate it.

HelenaDove · 07/11/2015 19:08

I wonder how many who are shrugging their shoulders at the concern for ex soldiers who suffer from PTSD also wear a poppy.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 07/11/2015 19:08

Some of them sound like whistles blowing in unison and some just sound like farting in surround sound.

GoneAndDone · 07/11/2015 19:15

YANBU. Here they seem to be happening every week from Halloween to NYE.

I find them really annoying, constant noise. And of course they are awful for pets, people with PTSD and for all sorts of reasons. Even people who let them off safely are still causing a huge disruption with the noise in residential areas.

elementofsurprise · 07/11/2015 19:44

Anyone who thinks fireworks are fine should be forced to spend a few days around here. The streets were full of children and teenagers setting of fireworks in a dangerous manner, waving them around, it was terrifying. It was literally every street too, and worse in the back lanes.

I can deal with the noise, it's little shits handling explosives that terrifies me.

elementofsurprise · 07/11/2015 19:53

Actually, they're still going off all over the place, but last few days has been the worst for kids on the streets with them.

bertsdinner · 07/11/2015 20:34

I'm 50/50 on this. I don't like the idea of banning them, it would be a shame to spoil the fun of having a few fireworks in the back garden. On the other hand, when they fall into the hands of yobs/morons they are anti social nuisance, being thrown at people, houses and animals.
I think maybe restricting the sale/use to a week in November would be a good idea.
We've had it for the past 4 nights, I'm hoping tonight is the last of it, getting sick of hearing it booming and banging now.

PennyPants · 07/11/2015 20:42

Yanbu. One dog not bothered, one dog is OK unless he's outside, which is hard to judge when there are random idiots letting them off.
Dc have never seemed to have been the slightest bit interested in them. They always liked the bonfire food best Smile

PrettyBrightFireflies · 07/11/2015 20:43

We have families locally who buy fireworks in November and stock pile them for the year - we have random "displays" throughout the year that coincide with bank holidays and summer BBQ's I assume!

WhatALoadOfOldBollocks · 07/11/2015 22:00

"Fireworks are as safe as the person handling them"
Yup...just like guns in the USA Wink

They're still going off here, but it's shite because it's only a few every hour or so, so it's really dragging it out. And they only last a few seconds with about 5 minutes break in between each oneHmm. This has been going on for the past week or 2 FFS. Far better to leave it to the experts and have a really good public display on one or 2 nights IMHO. It has far more impact that way and is isn't such a nuisance (to people, wildlife and pets), and it means people who find it traumatising know when they need to take measures to protect themselves. Same goes for pets and livestock.

Boomingmarvellous · 07/11/2015 22:08

YABU. We've just taken the DCs to a big bonfire event the they cancelled after 6 fireworks because it was too windy. Definitely not blowing a gale, just a bit of a breeze.

DCs so disappointed me too

I will now be buying a box of fireworks so they can have their firework night next week.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 07/11/2015 22:14

The bloody things will be going off until new year here now. As far as I'm concerned they should be available for professional displays only, and only on November 5th or the nearest Saturday. I can't believe there are some displays around here tomorrow - Remembrance Sunday.

Bunbaker · 07/11/2015 22:16

I haven't heard any fireworks for a couple of hours now.
