To wish fireworks for home use were banned?

People have been letting them off for over a week now. I'm sitting in my house and it sounds like the Battle of Britain is going on outside, mainly thanks to one neighbour who thinks it's ace to let off very powerful fireworks. I really hate it, my nerves are shot and if it's anything like last night, it'll be midnight before they stop.

AIBU?

YANBU

ahbollocks · 06/11/2015 20:36

Yanbu. It should be licensed only.

PunkrockerGirl · 06/11/2015 20:39

Yanbu. One night would be fine, when everyone would know to keep pets indoors, but it goes on for days round here.

LumelaMme · 06/11/2015 20:40

It depends on where you live. I live in a small town, it's not a big issue, and people get a lot of fun from home displays.

Maybe have day and time restrictions rather than a ban, or limits on what can be sold.

Indantherene · 06/11/2015 20:54

YANBU. Here it's been going on every night for about 2 weeks as well. The indoor cats are shooting worried looks at the window at every bang. The outdoor one has done a bunk again. Somebody over the back was firing them in the direction of our garden earlier; lucky it's been raining.

echt · 06/11/2015 20:57

When I moved to Au, I missed fireworks for a while. You can only buy them in Canberra. Where I live, they can only be used with a licence that is for the occasion only.

It doesn't prevent the occasional party fireworks, but Bonfire Night has died the death here, probably because of well-grounded fears about bushfires. You cannot burn anything in your garden.

I think as long as the Bonfire Night tradition persists in the UK, the noise will continue. I suspect that only limitations on what can be legally bought in(to) the UK will help. Who remembers bangers and jumping jacks?

DontStopBelievin · 06/11/2015 20:57

YABU. Ban everything due to the reckless actions of an irresponsible few. Hmm

Artandco · 06/11/2015 21:04

Random - no Germany is legal for fireworks. You can actually buy a firework and a beer from any kiosk for 1euro at New Years and people just set them off in crowded streets before the main display starts. It's slightly terrifying

MrsGentlyBenevolent · 06/11/2015 21:06

Don't - I usually don't call for things to be 'banned', and I personally have no issue with organised events (that I can avoid). However, fireworks are more than just reckless in the wrong hands, they are very dangerous - potentially fatal. They are also a huge social irritant beyond one or two nights and can cause hours of noise pollution/possible anxiety. Like I said, in my area they will now go on until NY, most nights up to midnight. Those 'reckless few' do this for weeks every year (until we can afford to move), it needs to stop.

kinkytoes · 06/11/2015 21:07

Yanbu.

There is a government petition about this very issue but I can't link to it on my phone.

Cheby · 06/11/2015 21:08

YANBU. Our cats are fine, but 2yo DD is terrified. She used to like fireworks and is ok when we actively go to see a display, but she hates the bangs catching her off guard. She's sleeping now but we appear to have one arse of a neighbour who is letting off a single massive rocket every 20 minutes or so, and has been for the last 2 hours. So just when you think it's stopped there's another massive bang, everyone jumps out of their skin and DD is woken and upset again.

ValiantMouse · 06/11/2015 21:17

They're still going off. Normally I wouldn't call for anything to be banned but explosives and drunk people are a really bad mix IMO. Last year I had a drunken neighbour who decided to aim his rockets across a (busy) road.

Honestly though, I'm sick of sitting here and jumping every time one explodes just behind my house. I can't even go to bed because of the noise!

DartmoorDoughnut · 06/11/2015 21:21

YANBU! Definitely should only be for proper organised events not this constant barrage for weeks on end

Andrewofgg · 06/11/2015 21:21

YANBU - one of these days we will follow the example of countries which only allow licensed, supervised events, and within a year we will wonder what took us so long. I'm afraid the pets will still be frightened Smile but perhaps less often.

scratchandsniff · 06/11/2015 21:22

YANBU. I don't mind fireworks but I do mind them when it's every bloody night for a week. It's very anti social. There definitely needs to be stricter controls in place or just banned except for special events like genuine displays or weddings etc.

Arkkorox · 06/11/2015 21:25

I live in a wooden bungalow. YANBU. Hate this time of year Angry

MaidOfStars · 06/11/2015 21:26

I am regularly baffled at the idea that we live in a society that allows the sale of an explosive device that has the potential to seriously maim others. I cannot uderstand why they are available for general use.

Differentnamesameface · 06/11/2015 21:27

My 3 year old (usually a fab sleeper) has been in tears for almost 2 hours and my 10 month old (a terrible sleeper) is wide awake and unsettled....

Grrrr.... I hate fucking fireworks.

GingerIvy · 06/11/2015 21:30

Fireworks are generally set off for a two week window here. One week prior and one week after. And again at Christmas, and New Year. And randomly from now until New Year's Day. Hmm

Lucked · 06/11/2015 21:33

Well I think if it licensed events only you would still get them tonight and tomorrow as it is the weekend closest to the 5th.

We have never set off our own but I can't get worked up about it, I loved them as a child

Topseyt · 06/11/2015 21:33

They should be available for licensed displays only, not on sale to the general public.

Beyond sparklers for my kids, I have never bought them, and I never will. They are a bloody nuisance, and very dangerous in the wrong hands.

Doilooklikeatourist · 06/11/2015 21:37

I think YABU
Have you never bought a pack of fireworks and set them off in your back garden for the family to enjoy ?
Danced around waving sparklers ?
Remember remember the 5th of November
Gunpowder , treason and plot ?

Bunbaker · 06/11/2015 21:39

I was going to talk about last night in Sheffield as well Bike. I was listening to radio Sheffield this morning and I think that the sale of fireworks needs to be more regulated. If they aren't for public display use perhaps people purchasing them need some kind of licence.

I also think the window for purchasing them should be a lot smaller.

ValiantMouse · 06/11/2015 21:45

Nope, I've never bought fireworks in my life. Ditto sparklers... and I fail to see why we should remember a four-hundred year old plot to blow up a building by blowing things up. It's like remembering the Titanic sinking by sinking ships.

Yanbu.

I had fireworks through the letterbox by "pranksters" as a student. Not fun.

Last year our neighbours (very built up area, probably 30 ft garden with houses and flats on all sides) had a misfire and set fire to the back of one of the houses.

They're having fireworks again tonight and I'm sat watching our wall that adjoins their garden, slightly panicked.
