To get annoyed at cyclists in the middle of the road

There are loads round here. They don't cycle to the side. They cycle in the very centre of the lane you are in. So you can't overtake if it's busy. Thus you drive to your destination in first gear. I. Haven't. Got. Time. For. This. Aargh!

Were you at the front of this queue?

merrymouse · 03/11/2015 22:46

Anyway, it doesn't really matter. I'm not experienced enough to comment because in 26 years of driving in a variety of environments I have never had to follow a cyclist for miles in first gear. Was this in the UK?

ivykaty44 · 03/11/2015 22:47

Roads weren't built for cars, the car came along hundreds of years after toads were built and a good while after bikes

Op this six year old cycled to school so its not impossible and much quicker than your walking. If you wish you can get electric bikes for hills

ILiveAtTheBeach · 03/11/2015 23:15

Useless fact, did you know that cars are the same width as horse carriages, because of the fact that Romans built the roads. ta da.

Most bus lanes can be used by cyclists. If what you're saying is true, then this cyclist deliberately caused a 30 car queue by refusing to cycle in the bus lane. Is that what happened?

ivykaty44 · 04/11/2015 05:14

Iliveatthebrach Motor cars built in 2015 are not the same width as cars built in 1920, the cars built now are much wider - just wander around a motor museum and as you get into the 1990s the cars become wider. Even a mini built in ,1969 will be narrower than a mini built in 2010 so the same make of car. The Italian job used minis in the sewers, they would have to use a different CaR if they filmed now as the mini would not fit into the sewer's Underground, its to wide

These threads make me so angry. I don't know why I read them.

If you're late, leave earlier.

Cock face.

Really? All of them? What a spectacular optical illusion it is when you see a Landrover and a Smart Car side by side...

SoupDragon · 04/11/2015 07:36

I was stuck in outside lane behind the cyclist. No way for me to overtake and at least 30 cars piled up behind Mr Cycle.

Isn't it good manners for slow moving vehicles to pull over if they are causing a tailback?

HappyGirlNow · 04/11/2015 07:56

If a car was going as slow as a pushbike the driver would be prosecuted.. Therefore if a cyclist can't keep up to the required speed they need to move to the side of the road and give motorists half a chance to pass. And I don't give a flying fuck what the Highway Code says!

merrymouse · 04/11/2015 08:11

And I don't give a flying fuck what the Highway Code says!

You are the one that is likely to be prosecuted with that attitude.

SoupDragon · 04/11/2015 08:18

Jeez some of the bollox being spouted on this thread beggars belief

A cyclist taking up an entire dual carriageway.

A cyclist shouting abuse as they plough down a whole family on the pavement.

Were you there?

The OP explained the dual carriage way - one lane was for just buses, the other had a cyclist in the middle of it holding up traffic. The cyclist was not taking up both lanes, that would be stupid.

I don't know why you find the idea of a cunt on a bike so unbelievable. Mode of transport doesn't change personality so you get just as many cunts on bikes as you do elsewhere. There was a well publicised video of a cyclist mowing down a toddler on a pavement because he was being a cunt and cycling on the pavement.

SoupDragon · 04/11/2015 08:23

The highway code states that all road users should drive/ride with consideration for others.

merrymouse · 04/11/2015 08:25

I think it's the general idea that all cyclists are cunts that people are questioning.

(And personally I am still intrigued at the idea that this went on for miles and everybody was in first gear - wouldn't that be a full on traffic incident with announcements on the radio?)

SoupDragon · 04/11/2015 08:27

No one has said that all cyclists are cunts.

merrymouse · 04/11/2015 08:27

The highway code states that all road users should drive/ride with consideration for others.

Absolutely. I just don't come across more thoughtless cyclists that thoughtless car drivers, and I drive quite a lot in areas where cycling is popular.

merrymouse · 04/11/2015 08:28

Not cunts exactly, but from the OP

And why do cyclists think they can dominate any road/path they are on? daisychain post resonates with me too. If I am not crawling behind them on a road, they are on the coastal path going so fast you'd think it was Tour De France. And as you jump to one side to avoid being mown down, they don't even say thanks.

SoupDragon · 04/11/2015 08:29

Unless you also think that the general idea from the "other side" is that all motorists are cunts.

merrymouse · 04/11/2015 08:37

I think the vast majority of road users are thoughtful, otherwise the roads would be carnage.

However, I think there is a tendency for people to overestimate how much they are delayed by slower road users, whether that is people on horses and bikes or slower drivers.

Anotherusername1 · 04/11/2015 08:53

I think this is right. I am quite impatient, but it really is only seconds. That said, if you get cyclist after cyclist and are caught behind each one for 10-30 seconds, it can add quite a lot to your journey. Sunday mornings in the Surrey Hills, well avoid if you actually want to get anywhere. But generally it's only one or two and really does add seconds rather than minutes to one's journey.

ColinFirthsGirth · 04/11/2015 09:08

Bikes are part of the traffic! They have as much right ti be there as cars. I can't stand this car is king attitude. OP be more patient and allow more time for your journeys - cyclists have every right to try and stay alive!

ColinFirthsGirth · 04/11/2015 09:12

More people have been killed by cats going onto pavements than cyclists. More cars go through red lights than cyclists. There are good and bad road users everywhere but cars drivers are far more likely to kill the cyclist than the other way around

SoupDragon · 04/11/2015 09:17

but cars drivers are far more likely to kill the cyclist than the other way around

And cyclists are also quite capable of killing themselveves using someone else's car.
