Should men post on mumsnet ?

Just wondering what other people think about men posting on mumsnet. I have been reading threads which men have contributed to and some are very funny but some are slightly concerning.
The man who wrote about his disastrous OLD was very amusing. It was great to read about awful dates from a male perspective. But there was also a sex thread about whether it was unreasonable to be asked to just show your boobs so your partner can masturbate regularly. The thread was going well until a man joined giving his personal thoughts on needs of men. The thread slowed and I felt that women had been intimidated by his opinions. Maybe not but would welcome a discussion about men being onsite.
Perhaps it should be renamed people net rather than mumsnet

The hello ladies furore really pisses me off! So many female posters will start with hello ladies and it rarely gets mentioned. If a man does oh god there is hell to pay.
My friends and I will call each other ladies.
I get that its a term many don't like it doesn't bother others. I don't see the need to seize on it like a terrier catching a rat especially when some men really are going through a difficult time and have posted a respectful post.
I think its rather unnecessary

BoneyBackJefferson · 01/11/2015 18:00

I question the motives of a man who joins an overwhelmingly female site. Why not let women have their own space?

Because as a teacher of children I find that the views of parents are important and enlightening.

Sparklingbrook · 01/11/2015 18:00

Usually 'hello ladies' on MN as an opening post is bad news either way.

Whenever MN has been invaded by other websites or hacked, it's usually by men.

Last time it was 4 chan, which is teenagers of both sex.

Shutthatdoor · 01/11/2015 18:11

Whenever MN has been invaded by other websites or hacked, it's usually by men.

Actually the last hack could have been done by either sex.

How do you know who are male posters. Everyone on this thread could be as far as I know.

Sparklingbrook · 01/11/2015 18:12

When was that invasion? I only remember the Pie and Bovril one which causes me to feel the same as usual sometimes.

I think the vast majority of us agree that it is of course fine for men and non-parents to join in. From that POV the name "mumsnet" isn't completely accurate - but the site is so well known under that name, it would probably be a massive ball ache (or would that be fanny ache?!) to change it. It also reflect the roots of the site, because it was started by mums.

Anyway, if I'd started this thread I would have worded it differently. Most of us don't want to ban men (which would be pretty impossible to do, anyway, have PPs have pointed out). For me, the question is how do we deal with the minority of men whose contribution is not welcome eg because of mansplaining, "pervy" or inappropriate posts and messages, etc?

The last hack was by a bloke, the website linked where they were talking about hacking MN was most certainly mostly men.

You mean Dadsac, that was one person, The site was invaded by 4 chan.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 01/11/2015 18:23

I think the majority of teenagers who post on that bit of 4chan are boys.

Yes, you seem to think everything bad is male, we get it.

Sparklingbrook · 01/11/2015 18:24

When was the 4Chan invasion? I must have missed it.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 01/11/2015 18:26

They posted a bunch of goady stuff so when their posts were reported they could run script of the profile pages and log in with MNHQ accounts.

Oh right. Recently?

Jasonandyawegunorts · 01/11/2015 18:30

Did you ever see the site that was linked during the hacking? Jason.

Yes the site is 4chan.
God onyl know how you knew most were all male when they had screen names like blackwidow, spiderfan and narutoshegum.

SmillasSenseOfSnow · 01/11/2015 18:30

female experience?????

there are forums on here which obviously would cover that. But there's a lot of stuff that (shock horror) is relevant to both men and women. Housing, money, holidays to name just three of my hangouts.

If this is a response to my post (I think I was the first person using the phrase 'a female experience' - note the 'a', not 'female experience' in general - I might be way off though) then I would recommend you read it again, or the post I wrote in response to the last person misinterpreting/failing to really read it. It referred to a specific thread, which the OP refers to as well, and, yes, a specific 'female experience' discussed and mansplained on that thread.

Yeah you can reeeeeeaaaaally tell the posters gender boards.4chan.org/po/

BathshebaDarkstone · 01/11/2015 18:34

Zombies are welcome to post as long as they don't leave little gobbets of rotting flesh about the place or stumble about muttering "braaaains". Grin

Shutthatdoor · 01/11/2015 18:34

You don't know that. Unless there are arrests and people named then you actually have no idea of the persons sex.

If they actually say 'I am male' then you don't know and it still might not be true

You can't tell by posters usernames either.

The board that invaded MN was a board frequented mainly by teenage boys

The point people are making is that you are assuming this. You don't actually know unless you know every poster

Jasonandyawegunorts · 01/11/2015 18:36

The board that invaded MN was a board frequented mainly by teenage boys.

And you know this how?
Is it because the users, who all use screenames and annonamouse posts did something negative?
