"Ginger boys are just ugly"

Just wanted to rant Angry

Had 32wk consultant appointment today, sat in tiny waiting room with about 15 other people all crammed in and there's two women sat opposite DP and I chatting to each other, conversation goes something like "have you ever thought that your baby could be ginger" "oh god no don't say that, I wouldn't mind so much if it was a girl but ginger boys are just ugly, yuk"

DP was sat next to me and could hear the whole thing, he is ginger and so is our 14 month old DS. How rude can you get?!
DP wears a cap constantly when he's out because he got teased in school about it.

What difference does it make what colour hair you have? It's just a colour the same as brown, blonde, black are colours! Thinking about it now it's really making my blood boil and if I could turn back time I wish I'd have said something to them instead of staying quiet because I didn't want to cause an argument.
Idiots Sad

Why are people bringing Ewan McGregor into this? He's not remotely ginger! Not that gingers aren't hot - I'm married to one and I fancy him rotten.

WorraLiberty · 31/10/2015 00:54

I would agree it depends on where you live if this was any other subject Mmmmcake but not on this one.

Also, in RL I've heard many a person compliment a newborn/toddler on their ginger hair, and then go on to say (once they've disappeared) that they wouldn't want ginger kids themselves.

It baffles me really how people feel so strongly about a hair colour, whether they're for or against it.

MitzyLeFrouf · 31/10/2015 00:55

I think gingerism is deeply ingrained in UK culture and has been for centuries possibly. Plus the pale skin etc. that go along with red hair don't really chime with modern standards of bronzed beauty.

But it's funny that in America red hair doesn't seem to carry the same stigma.

Sounbelievablydull · 31/10/2015 00:56

Yes I did read the whole thread but was in a fury of anger so did accuse everyone unfairly of being anti ginger. That was really quite crazy of me!

Appologies all round
Still stand by the difficulties ginger people face

IrishDad79 · 31/10/2015 00:56

Some people have given Ed Sheeran as an example of a "hot" ginger. I mean, Ed Sheeran, really? Don't get me wrong, great singer-songwriter and seems a really nice guy, but if he wasn't rich, famous and talented would he be considered a looker?

MitzyLeFrouf · 31/10/2015 00:57

M00nUnit I think Ewan McGregor has that look of being from ginger lineage without being an actual ginger.

But I agree there's no way he's a red head.

MitzyLeFrouf · 31/10/2015 00:59

No IrishDad he definitely wouldn't. I'm sure Ed himself would say the same!

Devora · 31/10/2015 01:00

We've all been there, Unbelievablydull Grin

M00nUnit · 31/10/2015 01:02

Actually I guess in some photos Ewan McGregor's hair does look a bit reddish. I guess I still tend to picture him as Renton in Trainspotting a lot of the time.

Agree with IrishDad that Ed Sheeran is not hot. Nice guy, very talented and GREAT hair colour but not a hotty, no.

MitzyLeFrouf · 31/10/2015 01:03

On a side note I was horrified recently to see that Ewan McGregor had had his teeth replaced with Hollywood style veneers.

Crush.Over.

MitzyLeFrouf · 31/10/2015 01:11

Poor standard of trolling these days.

Tsk.

MariaV0nTrapp · 31/10/2015 01:14

I know someone that says "if I have ginger grandkids I'll drown them" wt actual f! She's a twat. I hope she has a ginger grandkid so she can eat her words. not drown them, I don't think she actually would

DH has had black hair and a ginger beard, strange I know and I'm mousy (dyed light ginger) all our kids are mousy or blonde except our newborn, she's ginger and it's flipping gorgeous. If she was a boy it would still be gorgeous.. I love ginger Grin

MitzyLeFrouf · 31/10/2015 01:16

Why is it that mens' beards are so often ginger? What's the massive difference between hair follicles on head v face?

trollkonor · 31/10/2015 01:19

It isn't racism, from my south of UK point of view. I'm not saying it can't be very damaging or there isn't history to the hatred, in some cases maybe tnere is an argument? I didnt understand the depth of hatred until the internet and hearing shit from those mentioned in the OP.

I grew up in the south knowing that I was ugly but not just because of my hair. My hair is brown with a reddish tint. I have freckles and glasses, even worse I had to wear an eye patch for a while, my red hair tint didnt help. It wasn't until I looked back on childhood photos that it dawned on me that I wasn't a hideous troll and the girls with the straight blond hair were in no sense better than me. Not that anyone should be judged on physical looks. In my late teens I started to get attention despite the odd person wanting to remind me I was a red haired freckled freak. I dont naturally fancy blond guys but I wouldnt go out of my way to insult them, or completely discount someone who had blond hair.

One of my sons seems to have an all year all round tan, blond hair and a few frecles. The other brighter red hair, paler skin, many freckles, but like me he goes dark and freckly quickly
.
After looking back through family trees on both sides of my family we are mostly, german and or jewish immigrants pre second world war, with the odd scot and northern english and a handful of southern english thrown in. Highly likely more eastern European than modern day germany.

My son with the paler skin and redder hair seemed like fair game from all segments of his former very multi cultural secondary school. Its like society has said yes its fine to taunt him day in day out. Yes he had to prove he has no soul to many sub cultures in that school. I don't think it would have been any better in a less multi cultural school. Luckily for him he is on the taller side of average for his age and bites back. I don't think it has or will affect either of us long term like racism. My other golden skinned son, blond haired son just hasnt go through the same.

Skiptonlass · 31/10/2015 01:48

LOVE red hair. Love it. Pale, pasty and red headed is absolutely my thing. I'm auburn and dh is blonde - lots of red heads in my family, I was secretly hoping ds would be an adorable little day walker (he's not, alas.)

Ignore the idiots op. I bet your son is gorgeous.

(Waves ginger pride flag...)

MitzyLeFrouf · 31/10/2015 01:53

This fella is my favourite ginger man.

Mmmmcake123 · 31/10/2015 01:59

Irishdad, holy shit do not diss the glory of Ed sheeran. OK a lot of people may look past his amazing hair and focus on his talent but the point is that he is all round to die for!
I accept earlier post saying Mick hucknall, ugly ginge and would be still ugly with dark hair so I don't reckon all gingers are good looking for the sake of it. Good voice but still never good looking.
But hey Ed, check out photograph video and basically all his others. He is hugely talented with good looks on his side.

Mmmmcake123 · 31/10/2015 02:04

Hey worra why does this situation not represent where you live?
Pretty sure it would more than most, e.g. in my local catholic primary in year 2 about 70% of the children are ginger.
I presume ginger bashing if it takes place would be regarded as a bit ridiculous given the majority are ginger.

JassyRadlett · 31/10/2015 02:08

Gabilan, funnily enough I was just about to post in response to the more goady posters that being thick as mince isn't an ideal state of affairs, but they seem to be coping with it admirably. But then I reflected that it would probably get me deleted.

I'm with Pacific. I'm an immigrant and the English thing about ginger hair is both bizarre and frankly pretty pathetic.

Mermaidhair · 31/10/2015 02:08

I don't understand why people don't like ginger hair. I'm wondering if it is because it is more unusual and there is jealousy? I think it is gorgeous and sexy.

Mmmmcake123 · 31/10/2015 02:09

Can't wait for the beard fashion to die tho. Come back squeaky clean Ed as in thinking out loud vid or puppet Ed, or Lego Ed, or class a Ed, etc lol
Sorry xxxxx

MitzyLeFrouf · 31/10/2015 02:14

More power to Ed Sheeran but he's no matinee idol. Not that he needs to be! But when people say he's gorgeous I do think.................no.

mathanxiety · 31/10/2015 02:31

It is racism Trollkonor.

What you encountered was anti Irish prejudice. It doesn't matter that your family has no Irish heritage. Red hair is assumed to be Irish, and that is fair game in Britain.
