"Ginger boys are just ugly"

Just wanted to rant Angry

Had 32wk consultant appointment today, sat in tiny waiting room with about 15 other people all crammed in and there's two women sat opposite DP and I chatting to each other, conversation goes something like "have you ever thought that your baby could be ginger" "oh god no don't say that, I wouldn't mind so much if it was a girl but ginger boys are just ugly, yuk"

DP was sat next to me and could hear the whole thing, he is ginger and so is our 14 month old DS. How rude can you get?!
DP wears a cap constantly when he's out because he got teased in school about it.

What difference does it make what colour hair you have? It's just a colour the same as brown, blonde, black are colours! Thinking about it now it's really making my blood boil and if I could turn back time I wish I'd have said something to them instead of staying quiet because I didn't want to cause an argument.
Idiots Sad

There's also quite a profile of red-headed Africans. If you visit southern Egypt/north Sudan you'll see lots of ginger-headed Nubian people. Indeed some evidences point to the Pharoh Ramses II having red hair.
There's also a profile amongst Somalis too.

Quite a long way from Scotland/Ireland so the chances of cross breeding over the centuries are slight. Grin

Mitzy, dh was born ginger and his hair faded to blond and is now the colour of actual ginger rather than orangey. His beard is much redder, though and some of his body hair is very bright orange!

Cockbollocks · 31/10/2015 10:57

When eldest DS was born everyone congratulated us on missing the red gene in the family Hmm

DD is a beautiful Auburn, but that seems more acceptable as she is a girl.

DS2 is 6 months old and looks like he will have the same hair and eyes as DD - i'm really pleased. I have had lots of stupid red hair comments though someone may get punched in the face soon but I just laugh and brush it off.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 31/10/2015 11:08

My read headed friend had a blonde baby. At her wedding the best man (groom's brother) made a crack about dodging the ginger gene in the speech.

I may have heckled.

originalmavis · 31/10/2015 11:15

I do hope you did!

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 31/10/2015 11:18

Lonny I hope that heckle featured the word "Twat"

AugustRose · 31/10/2015 11:20

carabos is absolutely awful for your DS. My own DS is in Manchester at the moment and shaved his head about a month ago - it's nothing new he's done it before but after reading this thread last night I have wondered if part of it was because of his hair colour.

Was watching the gymnastics this week - and Daniel Purvis has glorious colouring - and what a super talented strong, brave lad he is. (Love the gymnastics - it takes some guts to do that)

Happened all the way through my pregnancy. I have red hair, and was bullied horrendously for it, even into adulthood. I used the "excuse" of being hormonal and pregnant to really lay into people who thought it was ok. Replace "ginger" with "black" etc.

When DS was born, someone actually said to me "Gosh, he's cute. For a ginger". At 2 months old. However since I moved to the Birmingham area people are much, much kinder and more complimentary about both of us.

DeoGratias · 31/10/2015 12:21

I always wanted a ginger child. I never even knew until a fwe years ago that ginger was not okay. I always thought it was one of the prettiest hair colouring there was as I grew up in the NE/Northumberland Is it a new thing that people don't like it? I don't remember it growing up at all. It may depend where you live. I suspect it's not an issue in the more Celtic areas.

whatlifestylechoice · 31/10/2015 12:23

Mitzy who is that man you posted on pg 8? He is the sexiest man I've seen in years.

Doublebubblebubble · 31/10/2015 12:25

Um...I would not say no if Prince Harry were to roll into my bed...

I think its disgraceful that those women were saying that. X

Red hair is as much a Scottish trait as an Irish trait so it would be a bit odd if Scottish people in general were anti red hair because of being anti Irish.

I think the Celtic variety of red hair is related to fair skin and living in northern climates where you need to max out on vitamin D.

I think some people are just twats.

That was a Gaulish red head by the way.

MitzyLeFrouf · 31/10/2015 13:08

whatlifestylechoice that's James Norton! Isn't he gorgeous? Grin

UnGoogleable · 31/10/2015 13:12

I clicked on this thread purely in the hope that people would have posted pics of hot ginger men like Damian Lewis.

I wasn't disappointed. There's a lot of ginger hotness out there.

OP those people were twats. and probably had ugly children themselves

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 31/10/2015 13:13

James Norton is gorgeous - he was very creepy and scary in Happy Valley though, but his hair wasn't ginger in that. Wink Grin

whatlifestylechoice · 31/10/2015 13:17

He is stunning, Mitzy. Thank you for introducing us. Grin

WorraLiberty · 31/10/2015 13:19

I wonder where the OP went?

MissHooliesCardigan · 31/10/2015 13:37

Girlfriend Thanks for that, I haven't seen it before. I adore Tim Minchin, the man is a total genius. DH is Irish and is the only one in his family (one of eight children) who doesn't have red hair. I love it on either sex. There are identical twin boys at DS2's school who have a mop of bright red hair and loads of freckles. They are about the cutest thing I've ever seen.

whispertoroar · 31/10/2015 13:46

I am a redhead (with slightly uncontrollable curls) and proud of it but I was endlessly teased as a kid. I get annoyed when I look back now and see how little I defended myself.

Like for instance, at college, listening to some boys sitting on our table talking about how hot Lindsay Lohan was (Mean Girls era LL) and a girl saying 'Yeah, she might be pretty, but she's still ginger.' (with a pointed look at me)

Or being with friends and discussing Harry vs William and a friend piping up 'Yeah, he's hot, but he's still ginger' and then looking at me saying 'Sorry.'

I'm more argumentative now than I used to be but back then I just tried to laugh it off.

It makes me Angry how someone can be so mean. Over HAIR COLOUR. Gah! It's so uninspired. And not at all funny.

When I had DD and she turned out to be blonde I had people say to me 'Bet you're relieved that she's not ginger.' Angry

However I also have to deal with her grandparents desperation for more redheads in the family Wink they keep staring at her hair trying to see ginger in it!

MmeGuillotine · 31/10/2015 14:50

I'm still gutted that neither of my boys have red hair. The youngest was born with it but it's a dark blond now, alas.

Having said that though, I HATED having almost luminescent red hair when I was growing up (in Scotland!) and have been dying it pink/blue/green/black/platinum blonde ever since my teens to hide it. I was relatively lucky because I don't otherwise have stereotypically redheaded colouring in that I am not pale and have dark eyebrows and eyelashes and green eyes but people were still really always really shitty and weird about it - the final straw for me was having to constantly run a gauntlet of creepy middle aged men asking if 'collars and cuffs' matched or having fetishists stroking it and trying to cut it off on buses etc. So disgusting.

I can admire it on other people though and think redheaded men are hot as fuck. I am so envious of one of my friends who has a troupe of redheaded children - they look beautiful.

evilcherub · 31/10/2015 14:54

I've always thought ginger hair was incredibly beautiful and special.
