My mp is on that list. Not impressed

LuluJakey1 · 27/10/2015 19:43

Let's just remember the people elected them very recently and by a significant majority. Wink

DamnBamboo · 27/10/2015 19:43

Voting for or against it will do nothing!
It's got sod-all to do with a tory government, being a man, being a greasy pole-climbing bitch or any of the other shockingly bad vitriol being spewed on this thread.

I'm not even a Tory voter, but fuck me, some of you are just nasty and very very ill-informed.

anothernumberone · 27/10/2015 19:43

My dearest MPs it is in plain sight
That the inner workings of women escape your plight
To tax me more for my menstrual flow
Really seems a pretty tough blow
But right back atcha you will never see
Another penny out of me
Because just your worst luck
I am one of those voters with a moon cup

DamnBamboo · 27/10/2015 19:45

Misandry for Men website a bit quiet this evening then?

What? I'm a woman you idiot. Why does that even matter. Shitty comments based solely on someone's gender is ok if it's about a man then?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 27/10/2015 19:45

Perhaps save that particular question until you actually know something about the woman and what she's done, DamnBamboo ... believe me it's not a description I use lightly

DamnBamboo · 27/10/2015 19:47

Do tell? I'd love to see what is so awful and the fact you use the insult 'greasy pole-climbing bitch'

LuluJakey1 · 27/10/2015 19:49

I think the point is MPs had a chance to vote and show allegiance and support for the idea and as usual the Tories didn't.Let's face it, if you are not at least upper middle-class, male, married, middle-aged, rightwing and white, you are of little interest to them once they have your vote.

scaevola · 27/10/2015 19:51

We cannot unilaterally reduce VAT (without leaving EU).

VAT is a general consumption tax, not a "luxury" tax.

If you want a luxury tax, then the party for you is UKIP, for whom this has been a policy for some time.

VAT is a complex issue, not least because, although there are some rates which are historic anomalies and because some countries exercise their rate to charge a higher rate than the EU basic (eg Denmark and extra tax on disposable items), you cannot lower a rate without EU unanimity.

That is hard to achieve, and thcurrent government may feel it has enough to on its plate in EU negotiations without adding this one.

DamnBamboo · 27/10/2015 19:52

Support for an idea that they would then be expected to follow through and act on, despite being able to do nothing.

Someone should just rock up at Westminster palace with a dead horse!

Surely they should be focusing on thing they can change, not on things they can't.

scaevola · 27/10/2015 19:53

And for the poster who wanted to know about how VAT is charged, exempt items, reduced rate items etc, they are all contained in VAT notices. Probably best if you search for the issues/items which interest you.

lorelei9 · 27/10/2015 19:54

Disappointed to see my MP on the list

A previous poster has said that we'd have to renegotiate the EU to get this changed?! Can anyone explain this please?

coffeeisnectar · 27/10/2015 19:55

Crocodile meat is exempt? Well in that case I'll start shoving a croc tail up my foof each month :o

DamnBamboo · 27/10/2015 19:56

Good explanation a few posts above yours lorelei

Ilovetorrentialrain · 27/10/2015 19:56

Theoretician's post on page 1 sums up what I would say (only much more eloquently). In essence though I agree tampons should not be exempt from tax but for those who will struggle then benefits should be at the right level to redress this.

In addition tampons and other sanitary products are produced by commercial companies who can charge pretty much what they like for them, tax or no tax. Would a 20% difference really be noticed as there are wild differences in cost anyway depending on brand?

cricketballs · 27/10/2015 19:57

DamnBamBoo if they had voted against this tax, then there would be evidence to take to the EU for changes to be made

How about a complete refusal even to respond to correspondence about the potential homelessness of a blind young man in her constituency, Damnbamboo - and this due to policies which she was very active in supporting? Or repeated overturning of firm commitments made within the community when she learned they didn't advance her career quite enough?

I'm ashamed to admit that I've known this woman for over 30 years - I even knew her when she was a pretty normal human being - and I'm sorry if you don't like it, but I stick by my description

Moln · 27/10/2015 19:58

Pohtaytoh · 27/10/2015 19:59

This vote had very little do with Labour MPs being concerned about the tiny amount of VAT women pay on sanitary products, and a great deal to do with Labour trying to force the Conservatives into a humiliating defeat and a major issue with remaining in the EU. It is for this reason the whip will have been employed by both the Conservatives and Labour.

DamnBamboo · 27/10/2015 20:00

DamnBamBoo if they had voted against this tax, then there would be evidence to take to the EU for changes to be made

What you refer to does not constitute evidence! Sure it constitutes popular opinion but what of it? It is just not that simple and as Ilovetorrentialrain has beautifully summarised, it will make no difference to the amount someone has to spend.

DamnBamboo · 27/10/2015 20:03

Irrespective of the issues you describe, and you still haven't provided anywhere near enough information about what her heinous crimes actually are, your description of her is outright misogynistic.

Oh the irony, when you are up in arms about men voting against reducing the tampon tax

Mumsnet at its finest or not

DamnBamboo · 27/10/2015 20:04

p.s. for the record, I am largely indifferent to you comments about this anonymous woman. Just shocked at the woeful lack of knowledge and serious frothing on this thread.

Flumplet · 27/10/2015 20:04

Praps they might consider them a bit more essential if we all stopped using them and saw what would happen. Non essential my bloody arse!!

RickRoll · 27/10/2015 20:05

"Not sure about the eu ruling

"

"Sanitary towels, tampons and panty liners are zero-rated for VAT in Ireland, as the rate was in place prior to EU legislation imposing minimum rates."
