interesting link which shows the list of MPs who voted against cutting VAT on sanitary products. Interesting to see its only conservatives and includes female MPs Hmm

Long list of tories. There must've been a Tory whip.

Must be some puns to he made with this one, surely MNetters?

toxic shock! tory toffs whip up tampon tax!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 27/10/2015 19:24

I'm utterly disgusted to see my own MP on here - but then she's become a greasy-pole-climbing bitch who used to be a perfectly normal woman, but sold her principles for political gain

Nothing new there, then Hmm

Fluffycloudland77 · 27/10/2015 19:25

This is why I buy tesco smartprice. VAT on 15p is 0.75p at 5%.

I imagine they round it up to a penny.

Dulceetdecorum · 27/10/2015 19:26

Also, why didnt the labour party abolish it when they were in power all that time? No time for politicians of any sort tbh

Duckdeamon · 27/10/2015 19:27

Laura Coryton: "our Government capitalises on misogynist discourse and period shame that has caused us to fear our own menstrual cycles."

Blimey! A bad day for George Osbourne indeed: tax vs tampon credits?

Not surprised my (female) MP is on the list.

Vile woman.

In the past she has also voted against gay rights, same sex marriage, and laws to promote equality and human rights.

Yet she still got voted in again. It makes me question what kind of morons live in my constituency.

I believe it's all sanitary products

BertPuttocks · 27/10/2015 19:34

This article lists some of the things that are VAT free:

i100.independent.co.uk/article/things-you-dont-have-to-pay-vat-on-that-arent-tampons--eySqxP5uzg

It includes Jaffa cakes apparently. Confused

Duckdeamon · 27/10/2015 19:36

But jaffa cakes are essential Halloween Biscuit

lavendersun · 27/10/2015 19:37

My female MP is not surprisingly on the list too. however, I am currently in the north of Italy and paid 8.70€ today for the only sanitary products I have been able to locate in two days, would have cost £2 max in the UK.

So whilst the principle is wrong in reality I think we are doing ok.

strawberrypenguin · 27/10/2015 19:37

My (male) MP is on that list too. Not surprised I can't think of single thing he's done that I agree with!

Notoedike · 27/10/2015 19:37

My Tory MP is not on the list - I assume he couldn't be arsed turning up!

DamnBamboo · 27/10/2015 19:38

Clearly people don't read the bloody news!
It can't be reduced below 5% - it's an EU issue.

What is so hard to understand this?

I'm utterly disgusted to see my own MP on here - but then she's become a greasy-pole-climbing bitch who used to be a perfectly normal woman, but sold her principles for political gain

Holy fucking shit! What the fuck is wrong with you?

Use a moon cup and it'll not annoy you as much. A one-off purchase and that's it.

RickRoll · 27/10/2015 19:40

NeedAScarf, there are four VAT rates:

  • zero - this covers things like (most) food, books, children's clothes, incontinence products, etc.
  • exempt - charity admission charges, education, etc
  • standard (20%) - most services, cars, bicycles, computer software
  • reduced (5%) - this covers things that used to have standard VAT, but the government have reduced it to the legal minimum under EU law. This includes sanitary products, solar panels, domestic power, children's car seats, mobility aids, etc.

If you sell zero-rated products, you can reclaim your input VAT, but if you only sell VAT-exempt products, you can't.

It's illegal to reduce VAT below 5%.

DamnBamboo · 27/10/2015 19:40

*Also the Labour party said they would eliminate the tax 15 years ago, but they didn't, for the same reasons that the Conservatives aren't - because it's illegal under EU law.

So if you feel so strongly about it, leave the EU*

^

Are all the tory-hates purposely ignoring this?

This thread is full of nothing but ill-informed comments, many routed in misandry! But that's o.k. I suppose? Jesus Christ, have a word with yourselves

Duckdeamon · 27/10/2015 19:41

We can read just fine thanks, despite menstruating. It is an EU policy that UK citizens wish our Government to seek to change.

SplatterMustard · 27/10/2015 19:41

My ISP blocks the site for some bizarre reason :( I expect my MP voted against it, he's got an exemplary track record for being a complete twat.

laughingatweather · 27/10/2015 19:41

If it's literally pences saved for individual women and could involve leaving the EU - is the objection the principle of it? The fact that they shouldn't be considered to be 'luxury items'?.

I can understand if it's about the principle but I really couldn't get annoyed to the point of deciding not to vote for a MP.

However, I have the most easy periods and probably spend about a fiver a year on Tesco own tampons so undoubtedly have a different view to others that suffer more.

DamnBamboo · 27/10/2015 19:42

And it's got fuck all to do with a tory government is the bloody point!

Voting for against it will make not one iota of difference.

Patapouf · 27/10/2015 19:42

My MP is on the list Angry I'm actually surprised he turned up to vote, the useless bastard.

Duckdeamon · 27/10/2015 19:42

Misandry for Men website a bit quiet this evening then?
