We have an open fire. I'd made a nice fire up out of wood and logs. DH put another log on the fire as I was putting DS to bed.

I came down, stoked up the fire a bit and there was a lightbulb in the fire. Yes. A glass lightbulb. I shouted at DH a bit, ie wtaf you ss this could explode in my face blah blah - but he categorically denied putting the lightbulb in the fire. I know he's been working hard lately but surely no one would be that stupid? He thinks it fell down the chimney (we have jackdaws who often send us little presents of walnuts and bits of dried bread) - but if it had fallen down the chimney then it would have smashed to smithereens.

Our house is over 200 years old. I've never noticed anything woo before. But this is odd.

What the hell happened tonight?

Of course you're not unreasonable- so long as you don't get all stroppy and huffy and go on about respecting your deeply held beliefs if someone dares to suggest coincidence, Occam's Razor, confirmation bias, pattern recognition or pareidolia.............

Abidewithme3 · 27/10/2015 07:41

My lovely old cat died last week and yesterday I opened a packet if whiskers for the other cat and it was completely empty! A new packet empty!!!! It's a sign.

GruntledOne · 27/10/2015 07:48

I suspect it didn't break because it landed on some ash, or the heat from the fire meant it fell only slowly; or it had been lodged in the chimney and had developed a tougher outer layer of dirt and smoke particles.

FrancesNiadova · 27/10/2015 08:23

Did Georgian folk use light bulbs then?
Did they just use candles/rush lights for woo?
Why didn't the ghost of the young boy they used to send up the chimney clear it out?
(I can see why his boss sacked him, useless, just glad he had a 0 hours contract).
Will all kids have to go up chimneys once the legislation to cut tax credits does go through?
Halloween Confused I love a bit of Woo, me! Halloween Grin

BeanGirls · 27/10/2015 08:27

I reckon it came in with the wood and the logs. Easily can happen.

Alternatively it came in through the chimney and full down, but didn't break because if the heat soft/ash.

Or your dh did put it in and when he saw your reaction lied and said he didn't?

I was feeding DD in the middle of the night about a month ago and heard DS moving around in his room. I listen to this for a while and as soon as DD had finished and settled I got up to tell DS to get the hell back to bed.

The light was on in the bathroom opposite his room and I was using this light to see into his room. When I opened his bedroom door I saw him dive on the chair that we have in his room. I thought "right that's it!" and marched up to it to tell him off. He wasn't on the chair though. It was just a pile of clothes. DS was sound asleep in bed Halloween Shock. What the hell did I see jump across the room?!

I decided to sleep in his room that night as I felt guilty leaving him alone in there! Didn't get much sleep though.

I've chalked it up to sleep deprivation but it does make a good woo story. Especially since a weird thing with the baby monitor happened about a week later.

A woo thread for Halloween! Abide - sorry about your cat Flowers

What's that about Quorn from mumm (previous page)?

Flowers, Abide,

FluffyPingPong · 27/10/2015 10:43

My husband and I awoke at 2am last night to the bedroom light switching on. I specifically heard the light switch click on too!!! Scared the hell out of me and I couldn't get back to sleep... every time I turned over in bed, I expected to see a crazy old demon lady leaning over me Grin

steppedonlego · 27/10/2015 11:17

I was pottering around doing a bit of tidying. I knew DD (who is 2) had just woken from her nap as I could hear her chattering to herself (she usually does this for a good 5 minutes before finally getting up and coming to find me.) She suddenly fell silent before shouting "hello gran gran" I stopped by her door, peeked inside to see her sitting up in bed and waving at her wardrobe.

My much loved grandfather died the month I conceived DD, and so never knew of her existence, but as a small one, I did call him "gran gran" Halloween Shock

SeveredHeadsDragOnTheFloor · 27/10/2015 12:11

There is a whole Woo topic on MN called "The Unexplained"

BertieBotts · 27/10/2015 12:17

I always think that "woo" stands for the sound a ghost makes in cartoons Grin

Dawndonnaagain · 27/10/2015 12:26

Ahh, sorry Furiosa you're right, of course! Wink

susiella · 27/10/2015 12:47

Furiosa don't leave us hanging! What happened with the baby monitor????

Furiosa · 27/10/2015 13:06

Ok the baby monitor.

We still use the monitor in Ds's room as he sleepwalks so we need to know when he gets up.

One morning I had just woken up and was enjoying a bit of peace from DD. I was just lying there listening to DS blethering away on the monitor. DH was beside me. I thought he was sleeping.

Ds started getting louder and I heard a very clear and loud "SHHHHHH!". I froze but DH leapt out of bed and ran through to DS. Over the monitor I heard DS ask "Daddy who was that?!" DH told him it was me and not to worry about. He stayed in there with DS as both of them were up now and they thought I was still asleep.

I stayed in bed for a little bit longer just listening then went through. Neither of them said anything but around lunchtime that day DH said something a bit unsettling had happened that morning. I told him I had heard it too. He's a big guy but he was quite unnerved.

I suppose it was just crossed frequencies. The monitor is about 5 years old though and nothing like that has happened before.

Spooky!

KurriKurri · 27/10/2015 13:19

People put light bulbs in trees all the time - to light them up for Christmas etc. probably got left in there or was dropped near the wood on the way to the rubbish and accidentally picked up.
Or your DH did put it there and he is lying/forgot -sometimes people do things absent mindedly, mean to throw something in the bin and throw it somewhere else.

Ask your self why a ghostly presence would put in all the effort to appear back on earth only to put a lightbulb in your fire - it would be a very stupid and futile thing to do even for a ghost Grin
