Readybrek

Unreasonablebetty · 26/10/2015 17:19

I've got a hankering for readybrek, ah I love readybrek could live off the stuff in the winter months!!

Tho I always feel a bit guilty having it for breakfast, does anyone think that it's more like a dessert, esp with a dollop of Nutella?
It's so similar to semolina! Obviously not a huge quandary, but i want to talk about Ready Brek.

Yummy yum yum in my tum....

I have ready brek (actually instant hot oat cereal as am stingy) in the winter but don't feel it's got cold enough yet Grin. I put cocoa in it when I want it brown rather than beige

MumOfTheMoment · 26/10/2015 20:29

I like it mixed with mashed banana.

froggyjump · 26/10/2015 20:32

Proper porridge here, with grated apple, or nuts and raisins, or lemon curd for me, and either chocolate spread or jam for DS3.

Way cheaper than ready break and nicer too!

MrsSchadenfreude · 26/10/2015 21:38

Does anyone remember the butter flavour one, that you used to get in the 70s?

thefutureofpolitics · 26/10/2015 21:41

KittyLovesPaintingOhYes Love the Not the Nine O'clock news mention! Grin

KittyLovesPaintingOhYes · 26/10/2015 22:37

Good satire never dies the future I can't hear 'Bread of Heaven' without singing along ' made Failed in Waaales' and as for the cars 'built by roberts'...

I'll get my coat... Blush

Crankycunt · 26/10/2015 22:41

Ooh I like ready break cold Blush

Or hot with a metric fuckton of sugar Grin

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 26/10/2015 23:51

My dd loves her readybrek. She has eaten it all through the summer...

Usually, she has hot instant oat cereal versions. I often have some.

We love porridge too. And the golden syrup packets for a treat.

Grilledaubergines · 27/10/2015 01:22

Not keen on the texture of ready brek, it's like eating wallpaper paste.

We have Kentish porridge oats which are the Best! Little bit of dried fruit, no added sugar. I could eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

marzipancustard · 27/10/2015 07:11

Best thread ever. I need to get some - it's my favourite thing in the world (with massive dollops of golden syrup Wink )

krazipan · 27/10/2015 07:19

I love Readybrek! I also add hot chocolate powder to make it chocolatey GrinI've not seen the proper chocolate Readybrek in years.

Shazziedazzie · 27/10/2015 07:19

I wouldn't touch it. It has loads of added salt and crap and killed a baby a few years ago. Just grind some oats.

fruitpastille · 27/10/2015 07:20

It's just finely ground porridge with some added vitamins and minerals. And the supermarket own brands are identical but much cheaper. It's a great weaning food. I like proper porridge too but that takes an extra couple of minutes to cook. I don't see it as a treat!

OneHandFlapping · 27/10/2015 07:23

I love Costa's porridge. It's got more texture than Readibrek and I think they they just add hot water to it. Lovely with honey.

I wish I could buy it by the packet

fruitpastille · 27/10/2015 07:23

It definitely doesn't have added salt! It is oats, oat flour plus iron, niacin etc that goes in other fortified cereals.

Shazziedazzie · 27/10/2015 07:34

There definitely was a teenage couple who's baby died and the judge blamed the salt in readybreak.

Notso · 27/10/2015 07:45

That poor baby was only three months old though Shazziedazzie so shouldn't have had any salt, even the 0.03g in readybrek was too much. He was also being fed adult gravy.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 27/10/2015 07:46

Ds loves it just had a large bowl with fruit purée

I buy Aldi/Sainsburys own he can't tell the difference but can with Weetabix

I think it's revolting nearly as bad as the devils puke aka porridge

FrancesNiadova · 27/10/2015 07:48

I do Readybrek as a quick, hot breakfast for the kids on a work day. I put the RB into a bowl + a couple of heaped spoons of dried milk. Boil the kettle, squirt of honey & jobs a good'n! Halloween Grin
It's nice as a speedy supper too!

FrancesNiadova · 27/10/2015 07:53

the future& kitty, I remember the, "If you want your kid to glow in the dark, go live near Windscale." Brilliant!
i also sing Failed in Wales to myself tee heee

Amummyatlast · 27/10/2015 08:06

We buy the sainsburys version too, as it's exactly the same.

Shazzie, as others have said, there is no added salt or sugar in readybrek. The baby was weaned far too early on mash, instant gravy and readybrek.

WotNoLoobrush · 27/10/2015 10:23

I tried readybrek this morning with mixed spices sprinkled on and it was delicious! Thank you to a pp who gave me that idea.

Topseyt · 27/10/2015 15:31

Shazzie, as others have said, it is extremely low in salt. 0.03g per 100g according to the box I am looking at now. Tiny, and certainly nothing added.

Yes, the baby you refer to was being fed Ready Brek, but also lots of other unsuitable foods. Ready Brek was just a brand name which the likes of the Daily Fail latched onto and trumpeted about.

It really isn't vastly different from baby rice.

thefutureofpolitics · 27/10/2015 18:15

kittylovespaintingohyes and FrancisNiadova Oh, I am so glad that somebody else appreciates good comedy! Haha, yes, Failed in Wales, classic! Those sketches are amazing and should really be shown on TV again! Also 'Kinder Lingers' (somebody had to mention it) and 'I Like Trucking' are absolute classics! I wonder how Gerald the Gorilla is doing now? "Wild? I was livid!"
