Just wondering why people refer to a GHD hair straightener as "GHDs" rather than "GHD". Or "hair straighteners" rather than the singular form.

Isn't it just one appliance?

Yes it's been a boring day..

There's two bits tho. You don't say a scissor or a plier.

I guess it is like some people visiting the " Doctor s
have you been looking at a selling page recently? Grin

pigsDOfly · 22/10/2015 17:57

I had a friend years ago who would talk about a 'pair of bras' meaning one bra.

She insisted she was right because it has two cups.

verystressedmum · 22/10/2015 17:57

Or a pair of trousers. Yes there's two legs but it's one garment...

goldierocks · 22/10/2015 18:04

I thought it was because it stood for Good Hair Days (plural)......for the price, I'd want more than a single day of good hair Smile

bumbleymummy · 22/10/2015 18:06

Slightly off topic but I have been meaning to ask on MN - does anyone know if their curling tongs/wand (whatever it's called!) are any good?

Babytookacupwoo · 22/10/2015 18:09

GHDs is correct isn't it? It stands for good hair day.

Run247 · 22/10/2015 19:39

Ha, all of your responses make sense...

But pair of bras, haha, that's how I feel when people say " straighteners"!

OP posts:
bumbleymummy · 22/10/2015 19:40

tongs.... ?

bumbleymummy · 22/10/2015 19:41

you wouldn't say hair 'tong' would you? Confused

AliciaMayEmory · 22/10/2015 19:41

My DF says pair of bras!!

HippyDippyRidingPretty · 22/10/2015 19:46

While you're all here...what's the plural of Prius?

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 22/10/2015 19:50

Well there are two straighteners (straightening plates) in the one device.

GreatFuckability · 22/10/2015 19:51

Hippy Priui, obviously. Grin

HippyDippyRidingPretty · 22/10/2015 19:54

Priui it is...

And Guinness? Grin

bumbleymummy · 22/10/2015 19:55

Wouldn't you just order two pints/glasses of Guinness?

GreatFuckability · 22/10/2015 19:57

Guinnesses. I want 3 guinnesses please. After which speech will be the least of my worries.

SaucyJack · 22/10/2015 19:58

The plural of Guinness is St Patrick's Day special.

Andrewofgg · 22/10/2015 20:15

The plural of Sudoku is Sudokota, it being a highly irregular Greek noun.

feckityfeck · 22/10/2015 20:23

Prius ---> Prii, pronounced Pree-ee, I reckon.

Going to the doctors is probably short for going to the doctors' surgery.

Guinesses, like Princesses.

I'm feeling all voice of authority-like. For no good reason. Any others?

feckityfeck · 22/10/2015 20:25

Except I missed an n in Guinnesses, which undermines my authority somewhat.
