To be fuming with this supermarket?

I've name changed because this is quite

On Monday Ds lost his prepaid kids debit card in Our local supermarket. I went to customer service to see if it had been handed in. It had so I showed Id, wrote down my name and address, signed for it and left.

What I didn't know was that I had been told to write it in the wrong place and had signed for some cash that had been found instead. So then the person who lost the cash comes to claim it and is told I've already claimed it and is shown my name and address and told to phone the police.

I found out today from a friend that I was being accused of stealing this money. So I go to the supermarket, they admit it what happened straight away and get the police to come so they can let the person who's money it was know I hadn't claimed it. The money was still in the safe.

I don't like people thinking I'm a thief. The person who's money it was could have come to my house and done anything.

I see what you are saying. I imagine you live in a small place, things like you've spoken of today *do amuse small minds... In small places. Chalk it up to experience. I'm sorry you were upset by it. If you have the energy, l'd make a complaint. :)

RickRoll · 21/10/2015 16:32

so you signed something you shouldn't have done because you didn't have your glasses on so couldn't read what it was you were supposed to be signing, which has caused some minor inconvenience, which has now been resolved.

vindscreenviper · 21/10/2015 16:34

I blame Edna for the whole confusing mess

Those aren't your glasses she's wearing are they op?

Snoopadoop · 21/10/2015 16:36

I love that always on these weird almost unbelievable threads the OP apologises for not making sense and it's always because they're feeding the baby.

JoySzasz · 21/10/2015 16:38

I think a few postersposters are being obtuse.
The information doesn't read that clearly, but it is easy enough to put the pieces together.

It's not the fact I signed the wrong place that's the problem it's that they gave out my name and address to someone who thought id stolen their money. Also the fact the police were going to come round.

I guess the posters who don't believe this don't live in a village? This is exactly what would happen at my local supermarket. Everyone knows everyone, or at most is one person removed from everyone else. Thats also why they'd give the name and address of whoever supposedly signed for the cash, because sure what difference would it make, her on the till will be talking to your mil/ndn/knitting teacher tomorrow anyway, and it'll all get passed on anyway.

Although involving the police makes no sense at all.

Fuminglikeafumingthing · 21/10/2015 16:48

Thank you Constance that's exactly what it's like.

Has Doris got her money back yet? If so, why would the police be coming round? Confused

CombineBananaFister · 21/10/2015 16:50

I feel like a genius for a change (doesn't happen often) because I honestly don't think the Op is THAT hard to understand. What I don't understand is why people are insinuating it's fabricated or questioning why an aquaintence didn't get in touch sooner ? the op wouldn't know surely?

Based on the bit that you're actually a bit fuming about, I agree. Mistakes are made i.e. signatures in wrong place etc but the shop should NEVER have give out your name and address it is a big breach of data protection especially in these circumstances where ill-feeling might ensue. I'd mention that it put you in a potentially difficult position and not great tbh.

Fuminglikeafumingthing · 21/10/2015 16:51

As far as I know Doris has her money back. The police officer was going to ring her and tell her.

If the supermarket is big enough to have a customer service desk then it doesn't sound like any village I have known TBH.

Gruntfuttock · 21/10/2015 16:52

Well let's hope that the news that you're not a thief will have gone round the village as fast as the gossip that you are one. In future be careful what you're signing though. I mean that helpfully.

ConstanceMarkYaBitch · 21/10/2015 16:55

Village, v small town, whatever. We have a Tesco and its big enough for a customer service desk!

Fuminglikeafumingthing · 21/10/2015 16:56

I didn't say it was a village I said it was a small town.

Sparklingbrook · 21/10/2015 16:56

We have a Tesco Express-no customer services. Sad

WoodleyPixie · 21/10/2015 16:58

Yanbu to be annoyed at the supermarket giving your details to anyone who asks. Even if you had claimed the money how could they prove it was the other persons money and not yours?

I would send an email to the manager and hard office complaining that your name was given out to a stranger and luckily did not put you in a compromising situation with being accused of theft.

WoodleyPixie · 21/10/2015 16:59

Omg! Head office not hard office. Must preview posts and not click post. Blush

ChilliAndMint · 21/10/2015 17:00

I for one find this thread hard to believe.

All major supermarkets have cameras everywhere.

I'm forever forgetting to get my " cashback" .

Recently I left some money in the self serve checkout. Upon realising this, security checked the cameras, as corroborated by my receipt. They informed me that they had seen a man take the money and leave the store and did I want to press charges.???

Sixpencenonethericher · 21/10/2015 17:09

It is true I know the op and she was feeding her baby everything she posted is true
What are you such a lot of disbelieving nasty fuckers
