To be really scared?

I need to have an operation in the next few weeks, and went for my pre med last week.

I've just received a phone call from my doctor telling me my results are back and my liver results are abnormally raised. They want me back in for further blood tests and checks asap, I can't make tomorrow so he has told me I HAVE to attend Thursday.

I'm really scared - what could it be?

I wonder if the urgency is to rule out hepatitis ahead of surgery?

It may not be that your results are especially worrying in themselves, but I think that if they would want to rule out any infectious causes of raised liver enzymes before operating!

Please tell me to mind my own business if you want but are you overweight? I had dodgy liver tests & I was very overweight, I've had weight loss surgery & have lost nearly 7 stone, still a long way to go but my liver tests are now normal for the first time in years. It could be something like that. If it is, don't worry, it can be reversed.
There are lots of reasons for raised liver markers, most of them can be easily sorted. I know it's completely natural to panic but please try not to.

My BMI is 26 so overweight but not excessively so. I haven't drank for 2 years, not even a drop (pregnant and then still breastfeeding my 1 year old DD).

Would I have had hepatitis screening when I was pregnant in 2014? Nothing was said then.

People nearly always think it's alcohol related. However, more commonly these days, it's related to being overweight or obese. Not sure if they do HepC tests on pregnant women as it was 7 years ago I was last pregnant.

I hate that, I wish they would give you results over the phone if you want them that way. I had a HIV test years ago, they had a number of options how I wanted to receive the results, in person, by phone or by letter. I said by letter. If it was bad news I would rather find out on my own in private.

Having to wait must be agonising for you. Best wishes and I hope it all goes well.

I do realise a HIV test is different though, in that it's either negative or positive, you don't have a range of results and options.

I really don't know what you had to do tomorrow, but considering the not knowing would be horribly worrying, can you cancel your plans tomorrow and see the doctor instead?

Try not to panic. It could be something common that just needs confirming so as not to delay your op.
It's annoying when they make it sound sinister. They should discuss your results on the phone as much as they can instead of leaving you to worry. There are many reasons tests can show abnormalities.

I also had abnormal liver tests, for which they couldn't find a cause, then several years (and many vague symptoms) later, they diagnosesed chronic inflammation of my gall-bladder. I expect they will want to recheck as now and then, liver parameters can be raised due to some kind of mild insult ( think a slightly higher dose of paracetomol than recommended or similar ). One of the functions of your liver is to get rid of toxins so if your body came up against something ( some kind of bacterial toxins for example ) then the liver function tests would come back slightly raised. If it was just something minor, they would then just return to normal. This just occurs now and then without any obvious cause. Hopefully it isn't anything serious. Try not to panic.

I had meds (my phone autocorrected that to mess too!) about 4 weeks ago, clarithmorycine for my pilonidal cyst (that's what my operation is for).

I can't go tomorrow as I have DDs inoculations so it's going to be Thursday. Be a long weekend waiting for results Sad

I'm pregnant and recently had raised liver levels. They've just gone back down and they can find no reason for it.

So they think it might just be a non-specific infection and the liver is fighting it off

Good luck OP,I hope it turns out to be nothing.

I had blood tests done a couple of weeks ago and got called back into our DR's surgery,I've had the same, worrying results with my liver,I've had more blood tests done and am now waiting for scans to be done.I have to go into hospital next week,I might have hepatitis,they think if I have it's been caused by some meds I have to take.

I hope you get the all clear and that you have someone at home to confide in Flowers

Antibiotics (erythromycin) messed up my liver once, ended up jaundiced - had to be monitored for a while but no long lasting effects.

I think clarithmorycine can do the same.

Good luck to you too ohthe, luckily DP and DM are really supportive and happy to listen to me witter on.

Good to know arabidopsis, I do tend to have adverse reactions to some antibiotics, erythromycin and that family are all I can really take.
