To think most NHS GPs are underpaid

Everyone seems to think that gp s all earn 150k. However both of the gp s I know "only" earn about 10k a day that they work and both have been doing the job 6-8 years.

I say only as quite frankly for the amount of training they have, the serious job they have and the consequences if they get something wrong then it doesn't seem like much. I earn a similar amount once my bonus is added in and I don't have an important job at all and has very little responsibility.

Both the gp s I know do just want to quit, one has recently been through a court case by a bereaved family and was cleared of anything. But has taken up so much of her free time and caused her stress to go through the roof.

Sorry posted before I had finished

The young man's outburst led to security being called who were fabulous and calmed him very quickly. However I had much sympathy and if he'd received a little more courtesy and care it wouldn't have happened. I'm sure hospitals were kinder better mannered places 40 years ago and I don't think it's all about money.

What is it about then Beaufort?

mrsjavy GPs do not earn £10,000 for each working day. They earn pro rata £10,000 per annum for the number of week days they work - and everyone on this thread is talking approximately using minimum salary levels for GPs as published by the NHS. Your GP does not earn £10,000 for going in one monday a year! and their salary reflects what the NHS feels their responsibilities are ie life and death every day. It may be a runny nose one patient, late stage cancer the next, a suicidal patient or one who has a tropical disease.

But (IME coming from a family of IL who are GPs and hospital consultants) most of them (mid 50 s upwards to 70) don't have much respect for many of their patients. They think they are stupid, ignorant of common sense approach to healthy living, daft enough to take ABs all in one day etc. I loathe dinner table discussions with them about how dumb their patients are and how the Govt have reduced their income. Most of them are taking early retirement, lecturing and earning a small fortune doing Insurance Company work. I do not respect these people but I do have the utmost respect for many doctors I meet and i meet many doctors and nurses as dd has a very serious illness making her entirely bedbound and in need of frequent admissions

I think you need to read the thread properly!

I'm not sure there are that many people saying GPs are overpaid. I am arguing that I don't think they are particularly underpaid.

It is possible to respect an individual, their job and their skills yet still think their pay is fair.

That said, there is clearly too much pressure on the GP service. Something has got to be changed and fast, I'm just not sure it's the pay.

On a personal and professional level, I'd say I come across 10 times more of the fantastic-type GP than the bad ones. They do a hard job and they do deserve respect.

brokenmouse · 20/10/2015 09:53

MrsJavy read the thread

itmine we are never going to agree so I'll leave it there. You have absolutely no idea of the amount of responsibility we manage on a day to day basis and I hope that you never develop an illness that means you find out first hand.

Maure, why start a thread if you do not know GP salary scales? They are paid more than £30k for 3 days a week.

Horsemad · 20/10/2015 12:07

I don't think Drs are underpaid but I do think their working conditions are pretty rubbish.
I know quite a lot of medics and I know I couldn't do what they do.

Marue · 20/10/2015 12:28

Spiral hun I do know GPS sallerys, if you had read the thread. Yes GPS on three days a week are often on about 30k.
