To ask about sensory processing difficulties?

Sorry I'm getting really confused trying to read about this on the internet- could anyone tell me about it or tell me where I can read a good evidence bases overview? Also who diagnoses or supports? Is it ot? Thanks

There's quite a few of us who have children with Sensory Processing Disorder, or even have it ourselves (like me)

An OT diagnosed my child's. They did a full report and sent lots of helpful advice. I was invited to some sensory clinics for further advice and the OT went into school to put strategies in place. After that, it was up to me to carry on working it out.

There is a difference between sensory processing disorder and sensory processing difficulties.

We are also with camhs and paediatrician to check the SP difficulties are not part of a wider condition.

I'd ask in the special needs area - AIBU can be a bit tetchy for such a sensitive subject

Yeah why are you posting in AIBu im a bit confused anyway, an OT is usually involved in diagnosis along with a gp or educational phsycologist sensory processing disorder can be vast part of different conditions and different for every person I think you need to ask specific questions.

There is a sensory processing disorder thread in sn I will try to find it when DS gets off me.

DS was diagnosed by an OT, he is supported by a local charity and me as the therapy he needs isn't available on the NHS locally!

Dd was part of a pilot scheme in our area years ago when she was in primary it was great as any kind of therapy is like hens teeth i think it was rolled out to all schools not sure if they still do it

not in my experience, nothing has been offered to DS in school anyway, even the OT just kind of shrugged and basically told me to find out what works for him and go with it.

The Senco allows him a chew, a fiddle toy and has tried to make sure they accomodate some of his needs with a sensory room he can retreat to if it gets too much for him, but no therapy!
