AIBU to allow my 5 year old son to play games such as grand theft auto. my husband had many arguments with me about this.... but it's just a game. I say to him as long as you understand it's only a game it's ok. My husband hates me for this. AIBU? Would you allow yuor child to do this.

YAB Totally Totally U.

Things are 18 rated for a reason.

Exposing a 5yo to 18 games is a form of child abuse.

AliceInUnderpants · 13/10/2015 20:58

YABU.

These games have a rating of 18 for a reason.

Though if your husband truly 'hates' you, I suggest divorce.

Fratelli · 13/10/2015 20:59

Yabu. They're rated for a reason. This particular game allows you to hurt and kill people, blow things up, find prostitutes, run people over etc. I think many 5 year olds would be upset by this and it's not going to have a positive impact. Would you let him watch a porn film because "it's just a film"?

Oysterbabe · 13/10/2015 20:59

This isn't a genuine post is it?

MidnightRed · 13/10/2015 21:02

This has to be a joke, surely? Of course YABU to allow a small child to play 18+ video games. It's fucking irresponsible. YWBU if he was 15, frankly. But 5? The mind boggles.

LadyMaryofDownt0n · 13/10/2015 21:02

This can't be real. Surely no one can be this stupid?!

CalleighDoodle · 13/10/2015 21:06

Must be a reverse. Id be selling the console.

ValancyJane · 13/10/2015 21:06

You are joking?! Yes, YABU! If your child was 15, not so much. At 5, yes you are.

ThisWasCrownjewel · 13/10/2015 21:08

Damn! I wanted to be first to call reverse but you beat me to it Calleigh.

EatDessertFirst · 13/10/2015 21:08

I think its a reverse. No one could be stupid and irresponsible enough to even contemplate allowing their 5 yo to play GTA. Beyond ridiculous.

Crankycunt · 13/10/2015 21:08

A 5yo playing gta? No, not ok.

I am a gamer and I play gta, however I am an adult and understand the themes in the game.

There is a wealth of games that are pegi 3+, and more suitable for your d's.

ThisWasCrownjewel · 13/10/2015 21:09

Although I did have an ex who was happy to play 18+ games with his 5yo DS. I'm glad he's an ex.

momsymom · 13/10/2015 21:10

people i understand the themes of the game. my son plays the game, he finds it fun,, he does not shoot and kill people, he just drives around in the car and runs around the city. DH suggested he could supervise/ possibly give son a spare remote that is turned off so he /thinks/ he is playing?? our son is 5, he does not understand how to fully play the game.

OP posts:
ThisWasCrownjewel · 13/10/2015 21:13

He might not "fully understand how to play the game" now, but don't underestimate how quickly he'll pick it up. And if he doesn't fully understand it, why in your right mind would you let him play it? Plenty of driving games are 3+ rated. I'm questioning your authenticity now too, OP.

LilacSpunkMonkey · 13/10/2015 21:14

Well, you just come across everything on this site...

minionwithdms · 13/10/2015 21:15

Genuinely wondering - would you allow him to watch an 18+ rated film? The criteria and content is generally similar, e.g. language, extreme sex or violence, drug use and other adult films.

minionwithdms · 13/10/2015 21:16

*themes, not films

Fratelli · 13/10/2015 21:17

If he doesn't understand it now he will in a couple of weeks. Stop trying to be cool, be a parent!

momsymom · 13/10/2015 21:18

so, if this was a reverse..... per se...... my husband is going in the doghouse for the next week. thank you ladies

OP posts:
ouryve · 13/10/2015 21:20

Yes, YABU.

No, I wouldn't. If I were your husband, I wouldn't think too highly of your parenting, either.

Or do you want a bit more froth than that, OP?

LadyMaryofDownt0n · 13/10/2015 21:20

Yep, stupid.

Surely if a 5 year old want to play a computer game where he gets to drive a car around a city, you go out and buy Mario Kart (or whatever it's called)

HermioneWeasley · 13/10/2015 21:27

Your husband is a twat.

If your son must have computer games, get him something age appropriate.
