A plastic bag for a portion of chips?

JoySzasz · 11/10/2015 15:03

Actually two portions - large.
I fully support the 5p charge, l've always got my reusable bags with me anyway.
However, on Friday the local chippy wanted to charge me for a flimsy plastic bag to take our chips home.
Chips are boiling hot, and greasy even through a couple of layers of paper.
I was under the impression that small shops won't /shouldn't charge? I also thought fast food was exempt?
If l return, l will (naturally) take a plastic bag. In the meantime AIBU? :)

Yabu. A bag's a bag (for aw that)

JoySzasz · 11/10/2015 15:07

I'm wondering if the local chippy will be donating to charity? Wink

Chips should never come in a plastic bag

Wrapped in paper then into a paper bag only

TheHouseOnTheLane · 11/10/2015 15:08

Plastic's bad for food. It leaks chemicals.Take a nice stout basin like my nan used to in the 1940s.

And stop moaning.

OooooohMissDiane · 11/10/2015 15:08

If the chips are open, they can't charge. If not, they can charge 5pence

JoySzasz · 11/10/2015 15:09

Well yes, a paper bag would be perfect.
The other local place does just that!

Doesn't a business have to employ over a certain amount of people before they can charge the 5p for a carrier bag? Or have I just imagined that? My local corner shop still gives put bags free of charge, I assumed it was because of its size.

OooooohMissDiane · 11/10/2015 15:13

Anyone can charge for a bag.

JoySzasz · 11/10/2015 15:14

Cerseirys that is what my Google search told me too?

I believe that retailers with 250 + employees have to charge and other may choose to charge. Paper bags are excluded

JoySzasz · 11/10/2015 15:15

So, this local chippy would be more customer minded if they used paper. Plus, it wouldn't be dirty or greasy, and could easily be recycled.

My butcher, a local independent, advised they would not be charging as the compulsory charge related to businesses employing more than 250 people in total
Not sure if the 5p charge by small business will be passed to charity as the larger retailers are doing

WeAllHaveWings · 11/10/2015 15:16

When the charges first came out (in Scotland) I went to Burger King drive through and they asked me if I wanted a 5p bag, I said no and the proceeded to hand me the burgers I bought one by one just in their wrapping paper, then the chips in a very small chip portion sized paper bag.

I don't go to Burger King often and haven't been back since so I'm not sure if they still do this, but I believe they can provide the primary packaging (ie paper around your chips) but if you want a bag you need to provide one or pay for it.

JoySzasz · 11/10/2015 15:18

I think l'm suspicious of this place.
I doubt they are donating to charity. I think if they really cared they'd use, or offer paper.
I'd actually pay 5p for a paper bag.

Small shops are exempt, as are fast food shops. They're greedy feckers that are chancing their arm.

JoySzasz · 11/10/2015 15:21

Our local(tiny) shop attached to the petrol station is doing it too.
Greedy feckers all over my neck of the woods! Wink

I will say what I always post.
We have been doing it in Wales for years.
It is no big deal.
Not necessarily greedy. Not sure about England but here the 5p goes to charity.
YABU.

EnlightenedOwl · 11/10/2015 17:08

This plastic bag charge has really peed me off.

JohnCusacksWife · 11/10/2015 17:12

In Scotland the 5p doesn't go to charity. Sounds like your chippy has just spotted an easy way to add an extra 5p of turnover to every transaction! V enterprising.

LyonRoar · 11/10/2015 17:14

They don't have to charge (I'm assuming they have less than 250 employees), however YABU because plastic bags make chips sweat and they go soggy.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 11/10/2015 17:18

im also curious as to why Next are charging? I thought the charge was meant to be for thin bags as its felt they're non-reusable? But Next are charging for their bags which are much thicker than a supermarket bag.

Didn't bother me as I had my string bag with me.

NoonAim · 11/10/2015 17:23

I put my recent Next purchase in a used Sainsburys bag.
The assistant was unimpressed.

HoneyDragon · 11/10/2015 17:25

Meh, I haven't spent a penny in next since they refused to let me put £70worth of items in my own bag. They held my stuff to ransoms at the counter.

JoySzasz · 11/10/2015 17:30

Wow, honey l can't imagine why they thought that would be a good idea.

I agree that plastic ruins the chips. A little paper bag would really do the trick!
